#pauledmunddavies #fluteteacher #pedsimplyflute Working on our fingers is neither easy, nor comfortable. As already indicated, the very fact that we have to spend so much time on this subject in our daily practice routines, highlights the bottom line that our hands were not necessarily designed with the initial idea of them being used to play flutes. There are also no short cuts. However, the h...

#pauledmunddavies #fluteteacher #pedsimplyflute Coffee Noodle 4 is once again something of a morning marathon, this time working extensively on the fourth and fifth fingers in each hand. It is well worth keeping in mind that our hands were not originally intended to be used to play flutes and in particular, flutes with multiple keys and rod mechanisms! Sadly, our hands do not naturally live up ...

#pauledmunddavies #fluteteacher #pedsimplyflute As the name implies, Coffee Noodle 3 is another gentle exercise to gradually and musically nurse and coax (the use of calm but persistent persuasion!) our way back into good air, lip and finger control. It might also just be what you need to get back into tip top flute form after a few days away from the instrument. We are ever so occasionally all...

#pauledmunddavies #fluteteacher #pedsimplyflute Coffee Noodle 2 focuses on both regular scales and scales in thirds and is designed to keep the fingers nimble and agile, with the body constantly involved in a supporting, rather than counter-productive role. The idea behind all of these exercises is to have something that will warm up those key areas (lips, breathing, tongue, fingers, stamina an...

#pauledmunddavies #fluteteacher #pedsimplyflute The first Coffee Noodle is a slightly different take on scales, broken down into passages that encompass the interval of a perfect fourth. With conventional scales, fingers raise and lower systematically, but there is little in the way of any form of repetitive action of the fingers, so as such, strengthening this part of our flute playing takes r...
Gallay Study No. 5 - Paul Edmund-Davies - Simply Flute
zhlédnutí 259Před 3 lety
This is a study exploring agility and precision, both in articulation and with regards to intervals. Initially, it will be well worth approaching the complexities to be found within, at a slow tempo, in order for some solid understanding of the mechanics involved to be absorbed. Linguistically, our tongues tend to be on the heavy side, ideally preferring to take more time to move than is availa...
Gallay Study No. 4 - Paul Edmund-Davies - Simply Flute
zhlédnutí 243Před 3 lety
Although primarily working on articulation, we can explore very different characters in this study. It is worth remembering that Gallay was alive in the heyday of Opera and its influence on him shines through here. The opening two bars are heroic and steely, requiring a positive or forward approach. The mood then swiftly changes in the following bars to something more mellow, sweet and gentle.Apa...
Gallay Study No. 3 - Paul Edmund-Davies - Simply Flute
zhlédnutí 178Před 3 lety
For fluid and precise articulation the tongue should move in a lizard-like way (backwards and forwards as opposed to up and down) and remain close to the point of contact.Whilst correct articulation is of great importance, the consistency and control of your air stream is of equal significance. For a true legato, make sure that you play through the flute, not simply into it. Remember that playi...
Gallay Study No. 2 - Paul Edmund-Davies - Simply Flute
zhlédnutí 153Před 3 lety
In order to move with a degree of speed, single tonguing should be agile and precise. As minimal movement is required, the tongue will need to remain close to the point of contact on the roof of the mouth and operate with precision and finesse.Try to avoid explosions and practice using ‘DAAH’ as a suitable syllable for these continuous passages of articulation. Good use of support will be necessar...
Gallay Study No. 1 - Paul Edmund-Davies - Simply Flute
zhlédnutí 376Před 3 lety
The way in which we use the tongue to articulate a note has a profound effect on the quality of the note that it is attached to. Too much force in the tongue will trigger an explosion, causing distortion and not enough energy will give an impression of lack of definition. As with the use of the bow on a stringed instrument, with flute tonguing, there too should be a range of variety to accommoda...
