I would say if it's your first time playing, then go for alto, they're more affordable and easier to play. However tenor in my opinion is the better of the two and is great, totally up to you!

Keep up the good work, soon you'll be able to read tabs and just play it some day. I still remember when I first started out, and something I highly recommend is that you start with simple bass lines first so you can can build a rhythm and trust me you don't want to be able to play and have no rhythm😂
