The more you age the more you get to know more sounds and textures, images... - i've trying to mix some of other genres (say ars subtillior, choro, etc...) with electronic music (as a electronics student myself), i am building a volkstrautonium of sorts.

@@GMS267 a transistor one, i din't find how sala did his, but i used a pnp and npn transistor for the oscillator. Same for the manual, i could'nt find how sala made his resistor wire, but my plan is makind a resistive paint that i can apply in the manual, and then have a conductive wire.

Hi Christophe, With the semiconductor version, subharmonics start out as square waves that are then shaped into it's very distinctive sawtooth by a further circuit per subharmonic. Driving the circuit into clip produces more odd numbered harmonics, making it more square, if you will.

Apologies for the late reply. Something of both. The subharmonic generators and filters were made by trautoniks. The manuals came as parts that I assembled and had the cabinet made locally. Most of the modules were bought assembled but I built the MOTM modules myself from kits.

Hi Marc, apologies for the delay in replying to your questions, ended up in a digital gordian knot when trying to log in. I'll do a video on the manuals when I'm able to set up again as it's packed up at the minute, haven't been able to do any music for some time. I have the glycerin resistors but tend to use pressure sensors under the manuals as these give a better signal to noise ratio in my experience.

@@GMS267Well I am truly looking forward to anything you can add. The Trautonium and Ondes Martenot are big inspirations to me and I use a Doefer ribbon controller to achieve comparable expression ( www.brassee.com/instruments.html#starship_one ). Sorry for delay in response. It was partly custom made by trautoniks along with other manufactures, so not easy to give a straight answer as I can't remember what the total of a the parts were.

Not wishing to dissapoint, it has no keyboard but a linear controller that you can see in other videos, also it took a long time for me to obtain this cicuitry as it was custom built by trautoniks. It also takes a great deal of practice to be able to play with both manuals at the same time. The sound of these circuits is indeed unique, but there are other more modern linear controllers out there, the Llinstrument and Haken Continuum being two ofd the better examples at different prices. Thanks for your approval though.

That makes three of us. I often use this technique as most acoustic instruments that are bowed or blown have some broadband noise in with the partials. I enjoyed your demo of Paul Schreibers E-352 an interesting piece of kit.

The highest note has priority due to circuit design.

I Think I must have missed your questions in email notification, apologies for late reply. The timbre remains pretty constant at varying pressures, if you take a look at this video from Der Trautonist: czcams.com/video/qtlyAWjWXcU/video.html There is mention of circuitry in the valve based mixtur-trautonium that was not replicated in the semiconductor version. Mention is made of it giving a kick to the sound at onset, so I would imagine thaty this drove the input harder, but to be honest, I'm not sure myself how this worked. Mention is also made that he had an external device to replicate this on the semiconductor version, but it wasn't as effective.

A technical question if I may. what is the octave span width on your instrument (distance from tongue till same tongue octave higher)? I read it was originally 18cm. But I think it's more like 23cm on your instrument right? The Trautoniks website says that the 4 octave manual is around 90cm long, which should have given 5 octaves if you take the original spacings mentioned in the old volkstrautonium manuals.

As stated, these figures were derived from an A-113 module subharmonic row in melodyne. I cannot account for why it should have these discrepancies, other than theory and real world measurements. Which websites, could you post some links?

there is an image on this website showing all deviations in cents for the harmonics, for the subharmonics you just have to change the + into - and the other way around: andrewmeronek.com/music-tools/blue-notes-and-the-harmonic-series/ Now that I think of it, it's only logical that an analog instrument like the trautonium can never perfectly represent all these tones up to the accuracy of a single cent, in fact it did for most of the subharmonics on your instrument which I think is already quite amazing.

Thanks for the link Marcus. I don't have enough German to do it justice, but on initial inspection it has a lot of documentation and sources so it will be very useful. Peter also appears to go into more detail on events in the Nazi era so I'm interested in finding out more on that too. A shame so little survives of Jörg Mager's inventions, I'm fascinated by the Sphäraphon, it looks like some type of medical diagnostic aparatus. One can only guess at the sound. I was surprised to see how divergent the trautonium's waveforms can be myself, it's barely a sawtooth at all at some settings. Very musical though, which is what appeals.

It's a saw-square at some settings and a very narrow what might be described as a saw-pulse at others. I believe the professors and students spent some time on it until Oskar was satisfied. Those thyratron tubes have a lot to answer for....

It is a living, crawling and probably very dangerous ... thing ... at some other settings. ;-)

Yes, they're beautiful things but not the easiest to work and play with due to the skill and patience required. For bespoke electronics they weren't that expensive, you'd easily pay the same for a second hand 303 in half decent condition as one, maybe both modules on a bad day. Out of interest, how would you use a trautonium in your acidic style? You would need top chops for fast riffs, no midi here, as you know. Best of luck with your E.P. btw.

heyo :) first, i still dont use google for replie things here a yt... sorry thats why i'm late. i think there lots of instruments need patience and rehearsel and check out things, also when all comes together its more and more massiv... hahaha its always a question of time and how hot i'm for this when having experiments with an electronic gear. i never have thinked about how to work with an trautonium for my acid but i think this can fit well too it like in a way of use a mono or polysynth for me but without keys. i also would be more interesting to play trautonium because i'm not really a keybordplayer... so i would rehearsel with Trautonium for my track to play live to it (also with subharmonic's) ;) because the most trax i doing or done are made with din sync connection ( more less miditrax atm here). thank you for the -good luck- for my ep ! btw. i still asking myself how the subharmonic generator will work with a 303 :D i know i would like this but its to expensive for me... thank you for all your videos ! thats all very very interesting for me because i still love the Trautonium and the possible amazing sounds of it !

They would lend themselves to old school house parallel chords very well, might be interesting to use some of the heavy odd numbers for a pungent yet exciting lemon & lime sourness with a nasty bass riff. Good old din sync. I ended up with an unwanted google account too, so that's something else we have in common.

Hi, They were built for me by trautoniks. Jürgen worked on Oskar's Halbleiter, or semiconductor trautonium's subharmonic generator, so based on the original design. It's worth pointing out that the saw shapers are quite substantial circuits in themselves on these modules. One can see and hear that they produce very distinct and variable waveforms in the preceding video.

Thanks Sytse W. The reverb being used is audioease Altiverb, though in an older version that doesn't require an ilok authorisation key. They take up a usb port and have come in for a slamming on gearslutz from time to time when people haven't been able to use their software.
