WE GOT EVICTED - Moving & Building a New Studio from the Ground Up - Episode 1
In our last video about our studio at 888 Dupont Street, everyone in the building had just had their lease terminated by condo developers. It left all of us scrambling to find studios and workspaces - this is a video about No Fun® trying to make it work!
It's taken me nearly 2 and a half years to get this video edited- partially just because of the huge amount of footage I had to sift through, but mainly because this experience was probably the most tiring, stressful, and financially taxing thing I've ever gone though in my life.
Pardon the longwinded voiceover - it's hard to sum up a year's worth of time in 20 minutes. A lot happened!
I think I had blocked out a lot of how bad this all was but making this video has been a great way to process a lot of these crappy experiences- Hopefully it's history now! I've really just been trying to recover from the burnout I'm feeling from it all.
In this video, I show the process of building a whole new workshop space, including sealing and protecting a new concrete floor - all while trying to vacate the premises at my old building on time.
In the Episode 2, I'm gonna build a table, try to finish moving in, and then move out completely instead - onwards to yet another new work space.

The board might have a bit of a warp, everything I used in this video was old used lumber. Once the frame has cloth stretched over and the whole frame is under tension it doesn't really matter.

Primary tufting cloth is sold by the meter, most suppliers I've seen offer larger sizes.

They're custom woven labels that we designed specifically to put on the back of our rugs. I ordered them thru Wonderlabel.

If I have a piece of tufting cloth thats too small for the frame, I screw in an extra tacked 2x4 crossbar or two to squeeze down the frame size.

I have a metal frame what can I do to get a nail frame to add to the metal don’t like the clips that came with this kid made a mistake and bought the middle one
I'm not completely sure I understand what you're asking - but you could likely drill out holes in the tack strips and metal frame, then attach the strips to the metal frame with rivets- rather than hammering them into a wooden frame.

Man triggered all those feelings of studios I’ve had to move out of. Unfortunately artist spaces are temporary like graffiti, but grateful for all the experiences I’ve had in spaces like yours.
You're so right! The reason we'd landed at the studio we were evicted from in this video was because the building we were in before that also evicted all the tenants to turn the building into condo units. Toronto's getting worse and worse, but I'm grateful for the good spaces while they lasted.
