Summer Flower Garden review: Bad news is forcing a massive change of plans!
Bad news is forcing a massive change of plans and a very abrupt end to my flower season. Its time to look at the flowers in the garden and think about how to move forward.

Growing and Pinching Dahlia

I left my dahlia tuber in the ground over winter to save time and effort in digging and dividing and as they start to come up I can see if it worked or if I have a mushy mess. Some have come up much faster than others so its time to start pinching out and thinking about spacing and how to avoid powdery mildew. Stick around until the end to see how the dahlia are doing now. Do try to start some hellebore from seed. I have a couple of dozen seedlings that are growing well. I sowed the seeds in the fall and they germinated after a winter in the ground. I’m newly obsessed with anemones ❤ but pretty sure the big ones are fancier varieties. Love the Peggy Tulip. My Swet William made me wait for year 2. That Vintage brown is so pretty! Great review video

    In regards to Snaps, I'm in a similar climate in US and since they are cool flowers I'm starting the plants now to plant in fall for spring harvest. The ones I plant in spring do give some blooms before heat, but then get flimsy like yours. But if I keep them cut back in summer, the next spring (second year) I get a massive harvest. Best bet for you plant in fall for spring then tear out (I did this with a section of plants), then planted zinnia's there.

      It took me a REALLY long time and lots of asking random people to find my new garden and it just isn't an option for most of the others at my current allotment. A tiny allotment garden may seem trivial to some but for the old people it really is a life line; affordable food, exercise, social life and a reason to get up and out of the house. It really is heartbreaking for them.

    • @fromthewitchsgarden
      @fromthewitchsgarden Před 9 dny

      There is so little available land around here. There is so much farm looking land around but the rules about using it are very strict and make it impossible for farmers to (legally) lease it out. Most people in apartments have small balconies, usually used for drying washing but talking to some of the others at the allotment it seems that some are going to grow there instead but it will literally be a few pots, nothing comparable to the allotment. It is frustrating and sad.

    Maybe the spray stock you saw was the quartet type? The arrangement with the buttery yellow stock is so gorgeous! I like your interplanting ideas. I was also surprised by the height of some poppies! I planted breadseed poppies for the pods, but will not put them in the front of beds again haha. Prolific (late) spring plants for me: orlaya, bouquet dill, iceland poppies, larkspur, godetia, and snapflags. I'm going to definitely look into more daffodils since my ranunculus bloomed so early and were lonely.

      Thank you so much. I took ikebana (Japanese flower arranging) lessons for a while which taught me that you only really need 3-4 flower stems to make an impactful arrangement. I am also slowly honing in what colours, shapes and textures I like in flowers so that I can grow a more coherent colour palette and flower selection so I should have the basis for a nice bouquet at all times of the year.

I soaked, pre-sprouted and planted 70 new ranunculus this early spring; only about 20 grew into plants and when they started producing blooms they were decimated by thrips. I had to pull them all out and discard them before the rest of my garden was infected...such waste of time and money...I don't think I'm planting them again to be honest...

    • @fromthewitchsgarden

      I get 7-10 days in the vase if I cut them at the right time but that can be tricky. Even cutting every three days I found I was missing a lot at the perfect stage. you want them to be about 1/2 inch out of the collar (the little ruffle under the flower head), but not yet open. If you let them open and they get pollinated they fade really quickly and they do keep stretching a little in the vase so I tend to cut too early and have a slightly shorter stem than risk them opening and only lasting a couple of days. I found the big purple lasted the longest.

    My ranunculus was nothing short of pathetic!! 3 flowers from about 40 corms, but I thinks there are few things going on! They are from last year, they were not great then either 🤦🏻‍♀️ I presprouted in Jan I think, planted out about 6 weeks ago in a low tunnel but was worried they would get too hot (sudden heat wave) so took tunnel off🤷‍♀️ I am now going to pull them out, they are taking up valuable space!! I think it’s also to do with the size of the corms, they were tiny so I need to dig deep in my pockets and buy bigger ones, I will have a big tunnel by next winter so will put them in there, I am based on the west coat of Scotland where it is VERY wet, hence the low tunnel!!

      Yay to the west coast, I was born on the Isle of Lewis. The corns like to be a bit cold I think (but not frozen) we are mild here so I put mine out in October as they take a long time to grown big and strong. If you are going to put them under a low tunnel you could try putting them in much earlier and maybe put a straw mulch down if it is going to be really cold? Good luck.

    Thank you for the update. I may have to give ranunculus another try. I'd be happy to send you some pastel-colored corms, if there aren't any restrictions shipping to Japan. I've just completed planting my cut flower garden, using every bit of space in my small yard in Portland, Oregon, zone 8b.

    Isn't it funny about how some people don't like the smell of 'mums and marigolds because it smells of cat pee to them? I actually like the smell of them both but cannot stand the smell of boxwood. To me that smells like cat pee🤭. The garden is looking pretty good so far from what I could see.

      It is strange how the same thing can smell completely different to different people. I hate the smell of strawberries and cant stand going in to the supermarket when it is strawberry season here in Japan. Love the taste though.

    I gingerly googled hairy balls 😬. Ahh it's the Swan Plant we grow over here especially for the Monarch butterfly. The eggs are laid on it, caterpillars eat all the leaves then turn into the butterfly. They get quite tall. You'll have fun with them 😊

    I would have to be eating that dill! What about bronze fennel? That's pretty too! The borage is fabulous. I love chervil for eating. I had one winter over and was excited for it to bloom and seed naturally in my garden but alas a root grub invaded the root and turned it to mush hence killing it.Clary sage grows kind of like the borage I think. I get pill bugs, they eat all my seedlings! Argh! I love your herb garden =)

      @@denisefaust6408 Nothing that has worked very well I am afraid. I try to scoop a lot of them out when the little ones are hatching and moving them somewhere else (the little bit of scrub land on the corner of the road) but there are so many hiding in the mud that I can never get them all. I have heard putting out hold an orange at night then lifting it in the morning with all the pill bugs stuck to it and removing them that way works. If you figure something out please let me know!

    A great use of a difficult space and I didn't know you can use Borage in the vase - you learn something new every day 😊 Do bees visit? (I was thinking the tennis players would probably complain 😠) Enjoyed the video 👍

    • @fromthewitchsgarden
      @fromthewitchsgarden Před 4 měsíci

      The tennis players are more likely to complain about the kids accidentally soaking them with the hose while trying to water the garden than the bees 🤣. We have a tiny patch of grass down the other side of the house that the kids planted with wildflower seeds a few weeks back so we will hopefully have more bugs in the garden this summer.

    Peggy, my experience with Lisianthus is they grow very top heavy and very tall. I've always staked mine. Also, if you are a zone 9, you should be able to leave them in the ground over winter. They will come back huge the second year. I live in zone 8 and they always come back for me.
