    I just bought one of those Coleman tents. Small leaks like you showed in the video do not discourage me. As other viewers suggested, just get some waterproofing for those areas. Surprisingly enough Thompson's Water Seal has been suggested to waterproof the tent. I've also seen Silicone dissolved in Mineral spirits.

      I read more comments. You did waterproof the tent. What did you use? Some suggested Scotchguard. I wonder how well the Rain-X suggestion would work.

    Works much better in low humidity environments. I've seen these drop the temp almost 40 degrees in the desert. Also, put the pot in full shade. And you can use a small solar powered fan to help speed evaporation.

    Zeer pots do not work well in humid conditions. Nor if they are in the hot sun. ONLY use distilled water! Minerals in tap water will clog the pores in the outer pot. They can only drop the inside temps about 20F or so but there are limits. Bigger the outside pot the cooler the inside will become. But you keep the inner pot it's original size. Inside pot can ge glazed but outside pot must not be glazed. He is conducting heat from the ground into the bottom of the zeer pot. A Yakhchal might be a better solution. There IS another way to refrigerate and even freeze that does not require electricity - ammonia refrigerator. The old ice cream trucks that sold ice cream in neighborhoods used to use an ammonia system. Very efficient and you can freeze things too. You only needed a heat source, Modern problem is in getting the ammonia. It is also called R717 if not mistaken. And the meth makers use that to make their product so it is hard for a normal person to get, if at all.

    A Zeer pot is a simple evaporative cooler that can be used to preserve food in hot climates. Here's how to make and use one: Materials: Two unglazed terracotta pots (one smaller than the other) Sand Water A cloth (to cover the top) Food items to be preserved Instructions: Preparation: Ensure the pots are clean and the smaller one fits inside the larger one with some space between them. Assembly: Place some sand at the bottom of the larger pot. Position the smaller pot inside the larger pot, centered. Fill the space between the pots with sand, packing it tightly. Activation: Pour water into the sand-filled gap until the sand is thoroughly wet. Cover the top of the pots with a damp cloth. Usage: Place the food items inside the smaller pot. Keep the Zeer pot in a dry, well-ventilated area. Regularly add water to the sand to keep it moist. Re-wet the cloth cover as needed. How it Works: The water in the sand evaporates through the outer pot, cooling the inner pot and its contents. This process helps to keep perishable food items fresh for a longer period in hot environments.

      @crazysquirrel9425 Před dnem

      Inner pot can be fully glazed to keep humidity in the inner pot lower. It is just the outside pot that should not be glazed. Also, the TYPE of terracotta pot makes a difference too. You want a low temperature fired one, not the current high temperature fired one. Most places sell the high temperature fired ones. Low temp ones are more porous and can evaporate water easier. Think garden ollas (real ones).

  • @lkw6640
    @lkw6640 Před dnem

    Lol, I was just about to comment about humidity being the limiting factor as far as how cold it can get. Check what the dew point is for your area, that’s the coldest it can get. I was also about to mention the hole in the bottom of the pot. But the main principle that makes it work requires that the outside pot be porous AND soaked. THAT is what enables evaporative cooling. The wet sand provides additional water to replace the water in the outside pot walls, provides a mass to store the cooling, and transfers heat from the inside pot to the outside pot. But it doesn’t contribute much to evaporative cooling since there’s no place for the water to evaporate to. In fact, the wet towel blocks the only exit point. The pot inside doesn’t need to be porous. Being in the shade definitely helps. Finally, airflow multiplies cooling effect tremendously by increasing the evaporation rate. Great video, hope this helps, and good luck.

    Soak the external terracotta pot submerged in water for a couple of days before you do this. Terracotta is porous and you want to trigger evaporation from the whole surface of the pot. Humidity also has a massive effect on this method. The internal pot is also better if it has a very small opening compared to the average diameter. Be very gentle when removing the cloth too, you want to minimise disturbance of the cold air.

    One quick hint, those thermometers take an average of the surface it can see. on the front (that you point towards what you want to measure) you will see a cone shaped hole, anything that the sensor at the bottom can see will be averaged, so it reads better the closer it is. The red dot (if it has one) is not what is reading the temperature it is the sensor at the end of the cone. .

    So the Egyptian qullah, or kullah, has existed using this for thousands of years. The key is maximizing the external surface area, and minimizing the interior space. Typically the outer pots would be wrapped in a wicking cloth to try to increase that area exposure to breezes. This of course is best in a dry climate, as low humidity is the key principle in action here. These would also often be placed at locations that had funneled the prevailing wind to a covered area where these would be set. In modern technology we have some advantages in materials. You can make structures of thin corrugated cardboard where the air can pass through the channels in the paper. The paper will wick water from the pot and thus cool it. We can also take some advantage by using phase change materials, heat pipes, and even micro-solar with peltier cooling to even get evaporative cooling vessels down to freezing temperatures with no external power required. To hit your maximum cooling effect you want it to exist in the shade, you want as much of airflow as you can get, you need to saturate the pots (it takes a long time to for clay to completely saturate), and consider putting a clay pot base as a lid, then wrap towels around the entire pot (your goal is to wick the moisture out of the outer pot as much as you can). As water changes phases it actually requires a slight jump in energy to go from liquid to vapor, this energy comes from the heat of the pot. So the more evaporation you get the cooler it gets. For future videos I would recommend having two pots side by side. One as a control that you add no water too, and one with the water.

      @@OutdoorAdventureandGear btw if you want to play with some cool refrigeration via phase change cooling check out NightHawkInLight’s most recent experiments. I have a feeling you would dig his type of science. Tech Ingredients up in Maine is also a great wealth of information. Unfortunately Massachusetts summer is a little too humid for the best examples of this (I used to live in Billerica, so I understand. Now I’m in the panhandle of Texas which pretty much the ideal location for evaporation cooling…lots of wind, lots of of altitude, no humidity)

    • @lkw6640
      @lkw6640 Před dnem

      I agree with everything that you said with the exception of one. Changing phase is not a slight jump in energy. For water to vapor phase change, it pulls about 1000 times more energy from the medium than just using water at a cooler temperature. But otherwise, what you said is spot on!!

  • @corwinchristensen260

    Evaporative coolers really struggle to cool items off once they're warm. They do, however, really help to keep cool things cool. Some tips would include having a tray underneath the big pot that the sides are just lower than the bottom of the inner pot. The hole in the inner pot doesn't matter as long as the water isn't so high that it's coming up through it. Fill the tray with water and keep it full. Let the corners of the towel soak water up from the tray as well (some fabrics are better than others at this. I have also put a water bottle with a tiny pinhole on top of the towel to keep it damp from above as well. ALWAYS shaded, as much airflow as possible, and these take TIME for full effect - you won't achieve maximum cooling until the second or even third day. Be attentive - if it dries out, you're starting over. I live in a super dry climate. My home is cooled evaporatively and I regularly get about 25-30°F temperature difference outside to inside. 15% humidity or less is not unusual at all. When the humidity is up a little, around 40%, I struggle to get 20°F difference. If it's raining, it's hard to tell that the cooler is even on.

    Soak the terracotta pots for several hours in a basin as they are porous. Since you have everything assembled, you might set it in water just deep enough to accommodate the assembly. Staring with wet sand in a dry exterior terracotta pot seems like it would take the evaporative effect longer to occur while the water permeates through the terracotta from the interior to its exterior. Just a thought. Regards, afishyfella

      @@OutdoorAdventureandGear - I doubt many tents would pass a "2-tablespoon" amount of water test of that many hours...we need to be realistic here. Well, maybe light to medium rain...but not a downpour like yours. If Coleman designs and manufactures a tent of that magnitude, then it will be much heavier and very few people would want to pay the cost for it. You think you'd buy a tent that passes that design standard for less than $100, like the Sundome? I once endured an 18 hour medium to light rain in my Eureka! Timberline SQ 4-XT...that's an upgraded 4-person Timberline model. I had maybe one tablespoon of water intrude in one corner, probably in the joining seam at the wall / bathtub floor...and that tent sells for at least $300 and is an ICONIC Eureka! tent with many satisfied customers for decades and Gazillions sold over the years.

    I wish Coleman would just use an internal factory taped seam design on that wall / bathtub floor seam. They do this "tuck and sew" type of design, claiming it is very weather resistant; obviously not waterproof. Seems to be a hit-and-miss; some report very minor leakage...other report none. I'd seal it first thing just to be certain. I have the "Coleman WeatherMaster Screened 6" tent, bought a while back. Have not had opportunity to use it yet...only did a test pitch once in my back yard in great weather. I'm sure the factory waterproofing treatment was fine, but I went ahead and hung up the Rain Fly and sprayed the external surface with Adsko Silicone Waterproofing - my favorite to use. First time I use it at camp, I will target a time of 3 - 4 days of great weather and immediately spray a good coat of Adsko along that floor / wall seam on the external, and completely seam seal that internal sewn seam. On the WeatherMaster, all of the seams on the underside surface of the Rain Fly are factory taped With that, I should be quite fine...as the WeatherMaster already has a great reputation for handling inclement weather very well.

    IT didn't do alot of water in that tent . That little bit of water wouldn't ruin my camping trip . That was some really hard rain too . Maybe do some water pruffing before you call it quits on that tent .

      I did end up water proofing it and using it again, and it's still going strong. Coleman has some great gear.

      I don't agree, atleast not with this one, it's my favorite sleep method rt now but I know what you mean. I had sleeping bags that would put my arms asleep when then fell off the pad, but it was 20" wide. Lol
