As a new switch rod user, I wish someone would wear a gopro chesty and show how to hold the rod and fight a big fish. I remember when I first hooked a big rainbow in AK on a switch rod, coming from traditional single hand, the rod felt really weird. Do you stick the but section into your waist and keep the rod parallel to the river ? So many casting videos and not much Catching 😂
Just wondering if these rods can be fished overhead when needed. Or is it only really double handed they suit
Yes they can with the right line system, which would be different than what we use for Spey casting. Historically, beach or jetty east coast striper fishers have used switch rods cast overhead to get more distance. Other overhead applications are valid, although not the norm. Did you have something in mind for a particular fishery?
Thanks for replying to me. Well I'm based in Ireland. And hoping to use one for salmon fishing. I've been advised that the 7# would suit with a rio scandi outbound switch integrated line for the small and medium sized salmon flies we use here as well as using 5-10 ft sinking tips. Reason I ask about overhead is I'm not a great spey caster so was hoping to be able to do both. Also wondering what your thoughts are going on the 8# for Irish salmon rivers. Our salmon usually average between 6-15pound. But mostly in the lower end of that range. Any advice is very welcome as there are not many views on the rod online.
RIO makes a single hand spey casting line that you can use to cast spey style with. I would think a heavy skagit line would be too heavy to cast traditional like. Maybe with RIO's Switch Chucker line and a floating head.

What is great about you is wealth of info and willingness to share. You experiment and based on your field work you say what you believe is great. Thank you for that. It is so difficult to find anything on Internet based on experience. Many spay rod companies put jus basic info on web page. They make great rods but you have to struggle to tune it up. What you do for Sage is incredible. I just wish you are not fully affiliated to create content for other spey rod manufacturers. 😞
Thank you! I do agree that it is often hard to find good info out there. I enjoy doing these, and if it helps folks sort out what their needs and wants are, then I am stoked to do it!
Thanks for the review of the 8130. I'm annoyed at Sage's website that recommended a Max Power for the 8130 instead of the Max Launch, while you suggest the 20' head is too short for the rod!
All good! Hey I hear you. But there will be some who fish the Power. It's just too short for me and I hope I made that clear. Some prefer much shorter lines than me. It may be that it fits their casting style or height. The ultra short head trend has hurt more Spey casters than helped them, in my opinion. A 13' rod is at the top end for a 20' head. The only time I would consider it is if I had 12.5 or longer sink tip attached. Otherwise, it's a recipe for a blown anchor.

I love my short switch rods 10' 6wt, and 10'4 5wt. Scandi and dries all summer long. I'll even go down to a #16 dry.

Would the 7130 cast 10 foot of T-14 without a problem? Most of my fishing with be with 10 foot of t -11 but sometimes the winter fish are just down deeper as you know. Thoughts on T -14 and ever so lightly weighted fly.? Thank you for your feedback back
Oh yeah, 10’ of T-14 is no problem at all.

I've heard nothing but positive comments regarding the R8 spey rods, and I favor a more medium <> medium-fast action myself. What are the grain windows for skagit and scandi for the 9130? The 700 grain launch clear hucks, but is that overlining the 9130 a bit? Given the deep bend that JH is generating with his Single Spey, I presume that one could go lighter for skagit . . . even down to 625 as a function of personal preference . . .
I haven’t tried it but all the 13 ft rods in the series bend a bit and have big grain windows. Are you thinking 625 in a Skagit or something longer?
@@speylesson6761 Thanks for the reply. Saw your review of the R8 7 weights, too. Nice to see the Rogue looking so good. I like short rods with RIO's 20 ft tips, too. But I mostly use them for Shad on the Potomac now. For the R8 13' footers sounds like 525 for 7 weight, 575 for 8 and 625/650 for the 9 would be my cup of tea. I spent a lot of Covid staying in Phoenix and chasing steelhead on the Rogue. I always wanted a 12'6" 5 weight. I am going to need an R8 mortgage.

Are you suggesting Spey fishing is flossing?
I prefer the flossers with the tooth pick on the other end. Sometimes they come in a minty flavor, which is a bonus. Flossing with a Spey line might work for some, if they have big gaps in their teeth. Assuming that would probably work for you, based on your comment.
I'm trying to cast underneath overhanging branches like that in front of you with my two hander. How would you do it, and still use a spey cast? 400gr scandi sounds like a lot for the 5wt, I could see the 350gr for sure. Maybe 330gr
Keeping your trajectory low or a little more of a “sidearm” sweep and forward cast can be effective getting you under trees. Might have to sacrifice a few flies but that’s part of the game. I know 400 sounds heavy but trust me it’s amazing in the 23’ Scandi body. Full Scandi Launch in a 350 is amazing.
Nice Jon. I fished the R8 5126 almost exclusively for a month in New Zealand our last summer. It is about as sweet as a fly rod can get. I used the #5 Trout Spey head (350 grains) much of the time and just varied the tips for the circumstances, it can carry plenty. I have found my perfect NZed Spey rod and look forward to bending it badly in September on the Tongariro late winter run. It's a warm, fuzzy peach of a rod.

So what are the benefits of this cast over a straightforward single spey?
None 😅
The demo would work better if you weren't facing back to the river. Having to swap around which bank you were facing in my mind totally threw me. I also struggled with constant references to other casts. I guess if id watched all of them it would have made more sense. But perhaps teaching this cast in isolation could work for new learners. Comm9n mistakes and errors would be useful. Also something about when and why to employ this cast would add value theres so many different Spey casts out there. I hope this is constructive because you clearly know your stuff. And i did learn from you so thanks
