    That was my mind's unspoken observation up till now. You can't but wonder why she gets this disdain even from officials who are supposed to be as neutral as can possibly be in as much as the players are on the majority a calm and composed individuals. Following Serena for more than a decade on the tour has led me to conclude she and her sister Venus are one of the most well-behaved tennis athletes on the tour.

    The funny thing is that *week-in, week-out* (i.e. on the Tour) Serena is one of the very best 'behaved' players. Serena (very) rarely questions linespeople or challenges umpires. In marked contrast, there are several players ranked in the top 10, who are frequently fractious in regard to officials, arguing minor points at wearisome length. Some are notorious for doing this. In contrast, Serena, for whatever reason, lets (many) of her own winning shots go, rather than utilisng the HawkEye Challenge system - for which she also has (had) the highest % challenge [correction] from its introduction, from 2006 ----. ... And yet three (quite serious) notorious outbursts at one of the four grand slam tournaments [the US Open 2004, 2009, 2011] completely distort her standing as player, in the public's mind... obviously, the general public are far more conscious of what happens at grand slam tournaments but still.... It's a paradoxical situation, if you follow the Tour, and know how players conduct themselves week to week...

    • @stevenmichael4990
      @stevenmichael4990 Před 9 lety

      Well said. I definitely agree with your comments about Serena's on court behavior being very composed for the majority of her career. Those few Serena haters are just trying 2 find any excuse 2 discredit her & find fault with her. They're just pathetic little people.

      Christopher This is by far the best assessment I have ever read. I have no clue as to why these incidents automatically define her as a person. Any person who I've asked why they don't like Serena has always mentioned the latter two incidents, as if no other tennis player has done similar things (and then, when juxtaposed with similar incidents, I always get the "well who threatened to shove a tennis ball down someone's throat?" response. People seem to act as if playing a competitive sport such as tennis is akin to having tea and crumpets with the Queen. Eh.

    • @MrChristopher0710
      @MrChristopher0710 Před 9 lety

      Jamaal A. Bivens thanks a lot, Jamaal. : ) . ... Well, it is completely obvious to me (~ it became obvious to me) that people's perceptions of Serena are affected / conditioned by 'other characteristics'. To pretend otherwise is simply nonsensical. Once you commence a dialogue with people critical of 'her behaviour', their personal prejudices and issues (to put it politely) come to the surface. Frequently with vehemence. This happens (far) more with middle-aged and elderly men than with any cohort of people that i have encountered. .... And i say this as someone who is not African-American etc. -- but as a person that has trained in tennis since my leaving university, thirteen years ago, who has been a member of about seven different tennis clubs, in three different cities. The contrast (in perceptions) with people my age, or younger, is jarring. Of my hitting partners -- this includes a total of at least forty people -- only one has been informed by these prejudices. Because he was 'young person' too, i was shocked. But he was an exception. Uniformly, among people of my own age group (or younger), Serena is admired and highly, highly respected. Of the people with whom i train / have trained, several players ( ~ female and male) have modelled their games (and strokes) upon hers. Serena's influence upon young / younger players is enormous, pervasive. The only player, comparable in these terms (in my experience), is Rafael Nadal. I copied Serena's short / acute angles on the crosscourt forehand and both her forehand and backhand drive-volley. (I have a vivid, intense mental image of all three of these strokes / shot variants.) _____________________________________________________________________ I think that Serena represents certain things to middle-aged and elderly men... and the expressed loathing and contempt is highly distinct among these groups. Whatever, Serena's 'behaviour', these people are able to (quite remarkably) disregard far worse behaviour from other players. Take a look at the 'handshake' / salutation at the close of matches. Players [ Kvitova, Wozniacki, Azarenka, McHale, Radwanska et al.] tend to embrace Serena. Serena has frequently been described as 'warm', 'sweet', 'funny' many, many times by other players on the Tour. She is held in near universal esteem among her contemporaries. Now.... study the handshake / how players react to a certain 17-time grand slam champion -- a player that has a distinctly cool, at times, inimical, relationship with his primary contemporaries and many lower-ranked players . Or study the 'handshake' extended by a five-time grand slam champion -- who has a yet cooler, yet more distant, relationship with her contemporaries. And the last two players are highly celebrated (and publicised) in the mainstream media. The male player has been described as being 'classy' and 'a gentleman' by a collection middle-aged journalists -- a description not recognised by his contemporaries. There is a marked 'disconnect' between this player's *representation in the media (**), and how he is regarded by (many of) his contemporaries. The same is true of Serena -- but in the opposite direction. ** " The stars of tennis maintain among themselves a false friendliness, and it is not a secret that [ ] and Novak Djokovic didn't love much each other. [ ] is definitely not as nice as he looks. " ~ Boris Becker.

      Christopher What I find even more baffling is the degree of which these same people argue their points. They clearly tell on themselves in the process, which is quite interesting...in a sad way. Your mention of handshakes and demeanor vs. celebration was a very brilliant point made. People don't seem to grasp how telling they are and what they truly say about those that defend them...

      +hassan1814 What revenge? Who wronged her? She brought this upon herself and those who had the misfortune to be involved. If anything, where's the justice for the innocent line judge whose career was almost halted, for simply doing her job? Where's the justice for Kim Clijsters whose fairy tale comeback story was completely overshadowed by Serena's antics? Serena's the one who owes a big fat apology to every single one of them.

    The only reason Serena was fined so much was because most of her tantrums happened in the final of the US Open, which is the most yearly viewed and attended sporting event in the WORLD with millions of people watching. They're obviously not gonna fine some guy 95k for spitting on spectators in a match that's not even being televised.

  • @TheOrderOfThePoodle
    @TheOrderOfThePoodle Před 11 lety

    Stop bringing everything back to "racial motives". You people aren't victims, stop acting like it. The last I remembered, the majority of incarcerated males were African-American, so what does that say? And John McEnroe WAS fined HEAVILY during the course of his career, and was in fact the poster child for anger management and tantrums. Learn tennis history before you post comments that make absolutely no sense.
