Eber Townsend - Revolutionary War Vet - DAR Ceremony
Eber Townsend (1760-1822) was a young private who served in the New York Militia - 7th Regiment during the Revolutionary War. He was wounded in action and captured by enemy forces and held as a POW. This video captures a ceremony for him by the Daughters of the American Revolution in September 2013 at his gravesite near Hammondsport, NY. His friend Samuel Drew (1760-1853) was also honored that day at his gravesite in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Hammondsport.
In May 2023, cousins Tony Townsend and Darrin Williams, co-wrote a song called "Freedom Isn't Free" as a tribute to Eber Townsend and the twelve Townsend family members who fought in the Revolutionary War. Search for "Freedom Isn't Free Darrin Williams" on CZcams to view the music video. The soundtrack is also available on iTunes, Spotify, IHeart Radio and other streaming services.

Thank you for uploading this! The ceremonies were wonderful in person, and even watching this now - 11 years later - gives me chills. Our ancestors gave us much to admire about them.

Your welcome. I am glad it was captured on video as well. Many thanks to all who made it happen. I visited both gravesites in May 2018. Very inspiring to see and their D.A.R. Markers are in great shape.

to T. Townsend: the audio signal is so faint on this video that it is unwatchable. This is a problem on many, many CZcams videos, though the audio on advertisements is always plenty loud. Aren't you aware of this before you post videos?? Please re-post your videos with greatly boosted audio signal. Death Valley Days is one of my very favorites.

Thank you for the feedback. I have not had any audio complaints on this video and it sounds fine on my computer but I will see if I can boost the default volume when it loads. Thanks again for the feedback!

@@ttownsend3252 Thanks for your response. I posted a similar complaint about weak audio on another CZcams channel and got 14 likes, so I am sure there are many experiencing the same problem. It is characteristic of YouTlube videos and movies on many channels and I would think CZcams is the source of the problem and that CZcams should fix it. Like I said, the advertisements are always plenty loud, but very faint audio on channel content. Thank you for your efforts to boost the audio. We treasure quality content on CZcams, especially movies and TV from the Golden Age, and we want to enjoy them with life-size volume. Thanks again.

Thanks for viewing Alisa. I'm glad our cousins Andy and Ward found this final resting spot of Eber and Mary. Eber is my 5th Great Grandfather. His father, Charles Townsend, Sr., also fought in the Revolutionary War along with several of his sons and nephews back in New York. Some sources indicated Charles Sr. passed away in 1780 but we do not know his burial location at this time.

You are 100% correct. The lady that did most of the research for these episodes did an excellent job. They are historically accurate based on the information she had at that time.

Rough and Ready is about 30 miles up the hill from my house. People still live there and I doubt it's grown much since 1850.

The flag flown at the end is incorrect for the time period, and has never been an official US flag; it has six rows of stars (5-6-5-5-6-6), with a total of 33 stars. In 1850, the US flag had 30 stars: five rows of six stars. The 33-star US flag was used 1859-1861, with five rows of six stars. This flag was used because Stock Footage was used from an earlier episode.

S6, Ep8 7 Dec. 1957 Rough and Ready During the administration of president Zachary Taylor, the United States levied a tax on the mines in California. Outraged by this tax, and feeling it amounts to taxation without representation, miners in the small town of Rough and Ready, California, led by a prominent businessman named Bundage, decide to secede from the union and create the Republic of Rough and Ready with Bundage as president. The fact that 'absolute power corrupts absolutely' quickly becomes evident as Bundage becomes a dictator.
