What I would add to this: Yes, the fruits are more trouble than they're worth on the underwater level, but for the first two levels, if you miss any of the fruits, just reset. Missing a single fruit is a loss of 1,000 points for the fruit itself, as well as no longer being able to collect 5,000 at the end of the level for getting all of them. You should have around 30,000 points by the time you get to level 3, and even if you miss the fruits, you should still be at around 38-40,000 points by the time you get to level 4. If you miss even a single fruit in the first two levels, that is a setback of again, 6,000 total points, putting you at 32-34,000 at the beginning of level 4.

i also usually untick the "hide when running" option for the hit box because it helps when you're doing things like mining, esp in the skull cavern and you might be running from/dodging enemies
