      I actually used sulfur chips that I picked out of acid loving plant azalea and hydrangea fertilizer using tweezers. 😅 But I would imagine it's elemental sulfur which is the choice of sulfur used in the garden and the sulfur in this fertilizer works great for black powder. They sell bags of soil acidifier in the garden center at Walmart that is pure elemental sulfur.

    I literaly dont know where to get pure sulfur, and also does regular coal from burned wood work?

    • @techieunusual2368
      @techieunusual2368 Před 25 dny

      Try looking for sulfur in the garden center at Walmart or a nursery or landscape supply center, the bag of sulfur they sell is usually for lowering the pH of the soil, and as for the charcoal, yes you can use charcoal from burning your own wood, that's actually the ideal way to get your charcoal, preferably from a soft wood like from a weeping willow tree is... Perfect... (don't) use hardwood charcoal because the wood is too dense and doesn't allow the potassium nitrate and sulfur to get into the dense wood fiber. Soft wood is more porous to allow the potassium nitrate and sulfur to mix into the charcoal. Willow charcoal and pine charcoal are usually your best option for charcoal, I have seen cedar pet bedding wood chips used for small pets used. Just place the wood (with the bark peeled off) into an empty paint can that you can buy at Lowe's or home Depot and punch a 2 to 3 holes in the lid to allow the wood gas to escape, place the paint can in a camp fire building up firewood around the paint can and you will see a flame 🔥 come out of the punched holes in the lid, that is the wood gas escaping which is what you want, wait until you no longer see any flames come out of the holes in the lid then remove the paint can from the fire and put a damp rag over the lid to prevent the charcoal inside from completely oxidizing and turning to ash, (you want it to completely cool before opening the lid or the residual heat can catch the charcoal in fire and burn up your charcoal. Once it's cooled down you can remove the lid and remove the cooled charcoal and then grind it up into powder.

      @@techieunusual2368 Thanks, bro really appreciate you wasted your time writing this hole thing, yea at first i tried using burned oak as a charcoal and soil sulfur but in your vid everything burns smoothly, but for me it's very hard to put that on fire and after burning it leaves some solid material. Btw thanks for the tutorial☺️

    • @techieunusual2368
      @techieunusual2368 Před 3 dny

      @eivydasradzevicius7106 One thing to point out is the kind of charcoal you used from oak is one of the worst kinds of charcoal to use as the wood is too dense and not porous where as softwood is porous and allows the potassium nitrate and sulfur to mix into the porous structure of the softwood charcoal so all the ingredients bind together better, that is definitely one issue with your powder not burning easily or burning very slowly, oak is a hardwood and you actually want a soft wood charcoal, willow is one of the best soft woods of them all, I used weeping willow wood for my charcoal, you can also use pine and even cedar bedding that they sell at any pet stores. See if that helps your powder burn more easily and faster and let me know if if it works or if you have any more issues. 😃

    does chlorate work

    • @techieunusual2368
      @techieunusual2368 Před měsícem

      NO! Potassium chlorate is a strong oxidizing agent and is much more reactive than potassium nitrate. Replacing potassium nitrate with the chlorate salt is NOT a safe substitution! The chlorate/sulfur combination is one the most notable “death mix” combinations in pyrotechnics. The “black powder” resulting from using chlorate in place of nitrate would be MUCH more sensitive to accidental ignition, particularly ignition due to friction or impact. In fact, this mixture would be quite likely to go off during mixing! This mixture, even if made successfully, would be prone to self-igniting in storage. So again, NO. Black powder MUST NOT be made with potassium chlorate instead of nitrate!

      You can use other materials such as rolling up paper towels or napkins, I've seen that used or a cotton twine that is thicker than the cotton yarn, basically anything that is organic that can burn can be used as (fuel) to be mixed with the potassium nitrate (oxidizer). Gun cotton is essentially cotton balls mixed with potassium nitrate and sulfuric acid which binds the potassium nitrate and the cotton fiber, so you can combine almost any organic flammable material with an oxidizer like (potassium nitrate), you can even mix the cotton yarn or twine with black powder with water and rubbing alcohol and hang that out to dry and you get (black match fuses). Which actually are more reliable fuses than what I have in my video.

    Can it be used to ignite dynamites when doing mining activities

    • @techieunusual2368
      @techieunusual2368 Před 2 měsíci

      It works the way any other fuse work so it could, but I have found later that these fuses tend to absorb moisture from the air which makes them unreliable or useless, it works fine the very first day of making them and I found to extend their life it helps to roll them up in a paper towel and then inside of a plastic sandwich bag to prevent them from getting soggy from moisture in the air, to answer your question about using them for dynamite, yes you could use it if you make these fuses the very moment you use dynamite for mining, but it would still probably be better to buy fuses for that purpose as you don't know if the fuse will go out halfway and that could pose a risk, but if that were to happen you would want to wait 15-20 minutes before walking up to the dynamite to change the fuse.

      Probably might want to lower the oven temperature a little and or reduce the amount of time of baking the fuses, every oven may differ, the baking is just for dehydrating the fuses to remove the water, I found it doesn't take that much time to dry them out in the oven. Also make sure the fuses are centered in the oven to avoid touching or getting near the heating elements. If the fuses touch the heating elements, they (Will ignite!) Please use caution and PPE, and they should should be baked in an hobby oven that is portable so you can do it outside for that reason.

But it's not necessary to dry out potassium nitrate when combined with charcoal and sulfur for black powder, it can still help to heat dry the potassium nitrate kno2 if it was in a very humid place for an extended period of time.

But I haven't tried a ball mill to be honest. Due to living in a small space with very small backyard, I personally don't feel safe to leave a ball mill unattended.

      How?

    • @user-tb3pv7wr6r
      @user-tb3pv7wr6r Před 26 dny

      Here are a few common compositions for chlorate-based fuses used in military applications: ### Composition 1: Potassium Chlorate and Sulfur - **Potassium Chlorate (KClO₃)**: 70-75% - **Sulfur (S)**: 20-25% - **Binder (e.g., Dextrin or Gum Arabic)**: 5% This composition is highly sensitive and was used in early fuse formulations. The sulfur acts as a fuel, while the potassium chlorate serves as the oxidizer. ### Composition 2: Potassium Chlorate and Phosphorus - **Potassium Chlorate (KClO₃)**: 60-70% - **Red Phosphorus (P)**: 20-30% - **Binder**: 5-10% Red phosphorus can replace sulfur in some formulations, offering a different reactivity profile. This mixture is still very sensitive and requires careful handling. ### Composition 3: Potassium Chlorate and Antimony Sulfide - **Potassium Chlorate (KClO₃)**: 50-60% - **Antimony Sulfide (Sb₂S₃)**: 30-40% - **Binder**: 5-10% Antimony sulfide is another fuel that can be used in combination with potassium chlorate, providing a stable yet sensitive mixture. ### Safety Notes - **Sensitivity**: Chlorate-based mixtures are extremely sensitive to friction, impact, and static electricity. Handling them requires great care. - **Storage**: These compositions should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from any sources of ignition or incompatible materials. - **Handling**: Use non-sparking tools and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). These compositions were typically used in historical applications and are now mostly obsolete due to their hazardous nature. Modern explosives use more stable and safer materials. If you're working with or studying these materials, ensure you follow all relevant safety guidelines and legal regulations. Take it brother❤❤

    I also made fairly fast burning gunpowder without a ball mill, but I didn't even have sulfur because that's illegal where I live. czcams.com/video/iGqLMgu_CmE/video.html here's a video of how it's made, testing at 2:18, do you think it would burn faster with sulfur?

    • @techieunusual2368
      @techieunusual2368 Před rokem

      I've tried using just charcoal and potassium nitrate without the sulfur, it takes forever to light and doesn't burn evenly and will go out on its own without burning up the rest of the black powder when I tested it, I'm surprised sulfur is illegal in your area, I would think if anything it would be the potassium nitrate as it is the largest ingredient in black powder and oxidizer, sulfur is usually sold in powder form at nurseries that sell plants because sulfur is used for acidifying garden soil and is used in fertilizer, that being said you wouldn't believe how I got my sulfur, I took the time to pick out all the sulfur wafers in a big bag of azalea/hydrangea acid loving plant fertilizer, it is high in sulfur, the wafers are tiny yellow round disks, it took me hours/days to pick out all the sulfur wafers but it was therapeutic. Lol I then grinded them in my mortar and pestle separately. That is also another reason why I used a mortar and pestle because when the potassium nitrate, charcoal, and sulfur were mixed I could see the little tiny chunks of sulfur were not completely ground up and grinding the black powder in a mortar and pestle allows me to see those sulfur chunks disappear and the powder goes from a black color to a grey color when I know it is finely ground up.

      @@techieunusual2368 Yes, potassium nitrate is also illegal here, but I had like 20 year old potassium nitrate (bought back when it was legal) which I crystallized and dried, and it works as if it's new. I also can make potassium nitrate from NPK fertilizers, which include some nitrogen and potassium, but is clearly not pure potassium nitrate, because it contains phosphorus, dyes and some metals. I mix that with water and spread a thin layer of it on cardboard and let it dry, once it's dry, it has turned to potassium nitrate, which I later purify for a better burn. It has worked with all NPK fertilizers so far, and I really don't know the chemistry behind that. Sulfur however I can find that in fertilizers too, but it's not in yellow bits ever. It's always some fine powder with other stuff. Its hard to get sulfur from that because it's only 5% sulfur and has tons of other things that are also insoluble in water. Maybe I can try it one day, but that sulfur would be really expensive. I am pretty satisfied with my sulfur-free black powder though, burns very fast considering how it's made. Firecrackers made with it make a bang as loud as commercial firecrackers made with sulfur, kno3 and charcoal, probably because their black powder burns pretty slow. Btw your sulfur-free black powder burned slowly most likely because of the ratio. When you have no sulfur the ratio should be 70% KNO3 30% Carbon. It's much harder to light on fire also, because sulfur has such a low combustion point.

      @@techieunusual2368 yes, urea has the nitrogen and dirt which they put urine over has the potassium. That process takes a year to get a good amount of potassium nitrate, but I just had to let my fertilizer dry. When you try the sulfur-free black powder again, let me know if you see any changes!
