Finding Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks in Stellarium
Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks is acting a bit funny, but it is brightening dramatically and might give us a nice show in the night sky. Astronomers are currently anticipating it could be a naked eye object by April 2024.
In any case, if you want to see it, you'll need to be able to find it and Stellarium is always one of the best places to go to see exactly where it will be in the night sky for your location.
If you need a demo on Stellarium I have one here:
czcams.com/video/57McZNbIVO8/video.html
If you get out and shoot the comet please let me know here or on my social media (@kristinerosephotography on ig and fb!)

Kristine - I've just listened to this again, having previously listened and bought the 11-16 for my D7500, and love it, as much for landscape as for astro. I've now gotten a Z6iii with a Z24-200 F4-6.3. I did but the FTZII adapter so I can use my Tamron 150-600 G2, especially for birding (DSO maybe someday). I need now an astro lens, which I'd like to double as a landscape lens. The Rokinon 14 is $370. I can get a 'like new' used Nikon 14-24F2.8 for $609 from MPB (a HUGE discount to the $1500 +/- new), so unless you've learned anything new since recording this video the used is the direction I'm leading. Thanks as always for all you do to lead and educate us! Steve Feller

Don’t know if you are still active but I’m gonna take a chance… I need a monitor that I can use to easily compare a file from two different apps. I need to compare between a folder of videos against a numbers document file. I’m using a MacBook and I need a second monitor to see the information in two different windows. I converted old camcorder tapes into a digital file and I want to create iMovies from those files. I also have photos I want to clean up. I want to buy a new monitor that will allow me to do this and created a quality product. I have a feeling you can point me the type of monitor I should choose today in 2024…Most reviews or videos are geared toward gamers or just people who do office type work at home. I want to get a quality monitor for this and possibly future type project like this I might do… Your video just popped up in my feed and I’m so glad it did….. I needed to hear what you said in this video however I wondered if you have any new recommendations now!

I do see these comments! Now does my ADHD let me reply, only if I do so immediately ;) There is a difference though for your applications from what I talked about here, and I'm not 100% the best person to answer. Because I am utilizing monitors with the end result of my digital work ending up as a printed image. I have to take into account what are the best specs so that I'm seeing what I need on screen (additive) and it will translate well into print (subtractive). You're sticking with on screen, so you don't need to worry about the overall resolution in the same way, QHD is perfect for digital -> print work, but you will need to think about where your final video (ie. digital product) is going to be viewed most often, and you would want to optimize for that. So my homework for you is to think about where your files will be viewed most, what the perfect environment would be for viewing, and then look at what colour capabilities the devices used to show your movies will have and what resolution they are normally at. I would still look for a screen that shows a wider gamut of colour, but I'm guessing having a higher resolution screen will be important because most screens are more high res now. Sorry I can't help with recs!

I'm a software engineer but in my spare time love to do photography, call me a hobby photographer. I'm in doubt, because for my work I would like to have something bigger than a 27", say 34". Will this also be ok for my editing then? Or too big? And also, if I would buy 34" screen, will 2K be enough or should I go for a 4K, since I will have a 34" screen? :)

For Canon mirrorless users, third-party lenses don't really exist yet because of the RF mount restrictions (though rumors are that Canon is going to allow other lens makers to make RF lenses). However, Sigma - which is so good it doesn't really qualify as a "third-party lens" IMO - makes the fantastic Art series (which Kristine refers to). I used the 14 mm f/1.8 (not the f/1.4) with an EF mount and adapter for aurora photography in Iceland. It's an amazing lens, and much more affordable than the equivalent Canon would surely be.

I’m planning to use a Sony a7III with my Tokina 11-16 f2.8. I haven’t put this combination together before. I was shooting this lens on a Sony a77II which has a crop frame so I’m hoping for better results this time out. For a third party lens, I really do like this particular model. Fingers crossed.

    • @KristineRosePhotography

It is doable with the 3100, it will be very noisy and a bit dark because the sensor only goes natively to 3200, but you can push it to 6400. I think it is worthwhile to get out and try with your 3100 - in the long run if you really wanted to pursue Milky Way photography you would likely upgrade your camera body, but you wouldn't need to right away.

Hi Kristine. I’ve been a Canon dude since 1972, when I preferred a Canon F1. Now I use an R5, which was brilliant in Iceland shooting auroras with a Sigma 14mm f/1.8. Canon hasn’t allowed RF mount lenses to be produced by 3rd parties, so I have to use an EF adapter, but that shouldn’t matter for Milky Way photography… or should it?

Unfortunately, with Stellarium 23.3 after @2:32 the Interface looks different. "Import orbital elements.." opens a window which looks different and gives you no options. What a shame. Fun fact.. It's available in the mobile app 🤷‍♂

I don't think you looked quite enough! It's a bit different from what is shown here, but it absolutely does give you elements.
