It's a shame that 21:34 is the only moment in the entire work where he uses that "rhythmized vibrato" technique. It's a fascinating sound and easily one Feldman could've explored more. Anyway pretty work as any from Feldman's late period, though it wears the Varese influence a little more obviously than most. Those sfz brass stabs punctuating sustained quiet backgrounds is a texture straight from Varese's oeuvre

I think listening to this music as a kid made me think that pizzicato strings and timpanis go really well together :)

Absolutely fantastic symphony. A great, wonderful composition. The introduction, also...I have no words for describing it: for me, it's like a musical description of the abyss of the human malvagity and cruelty like "homo hominis lupus", but the solistic and ethereal melody of the solo trumpet over the tumultuous, inferic and magmatic sound of the strings, is like a "voice of giustice" who tell: "I will never abandon the soffering humanity at his destiny". And then...the birth of socialism for a human progress, opposite to the cruelty of capitalism. Naturally, those are my personal sensation listening this absolutely, fantastic Shostachovich's work.

Who knows more about this march? It sounds as if Wagner took it out of the drawer where it had been lying since the time of the composition of “Liebesverbot” and “Rienzi”.

An extrodinary work of the highest level ... Truly - a work in a class by itself. This defines the 'newness' of the extraordinary 'visions' of a brilliant composer of the 21st century who in fact composed it in the century prior (1969) Captivating .... Brilliant !!

This piece is probably my most memorable concert experience live ever. It's so damn good.

I can see why he withdrew it, not being on brand, but it's great.

We're still standing on the shoulders of a giant with this, right up there with Ode to Napoleon. Compared to the 20s works, it's just absolutely phenomenal. The clarity in the orchestration is perfect, it's so balanced in a way most 12 tone music just doesn't do... and of course it is one of the greatest endings in the canon. Those final five notes still haunt me in my sleep.

Luciano Berio finished this piece one year before Stockhausen's Kontakte in 1958-1960. A true avantguardist composer.
