Hey Friends! Thanks for stopping by, on this channel I’m going to document the steps I’m taking to set up a new studio space (yay!) and relearn all the clay skills I have developed over the years.
I have a profound appreciation for organization and efficiency, so I’m starting with getting the most organized I can in my clay space. Pottery studio organization is tricky, but such a fun challenge for me. I have another secret superpower in building custom cabinetry, so I’m taking those skills to create the best pottery studio I can. Follow along if you love throwing clay, building things, problem solving and sharing your craft too!

I'm on the pottery wheel a bit today throwing a few mugs, then mixing up some Stick-up Slip to use when attaching handles. This is often known as the best slip for attaching handles! I built some custom furniture for my pottery studio!
I got lucky: my son (a glass artist) gave me an overhead vent-a-kiln setup that he didn’t need. Leap of faith cutting a 4” hole in my shop wall though! Can’t imagine concrete.
Oh what a gift that is! Quite a nice son you must have. Fortunately I didn’t have to go through concrete, it probably wasn’t super easy to see in the video but it was several inches of laminated OSB. Still a good challenge though 😂
I found the "dog Bone" technique most interesting!
Thank you!!! They are fun for sure!
Love the bow tie handles!
I think they are my favorite too!
What an undertaking! You are amazing. I am very impressed and again green with envy!! 🤗
Ahh thank you!! It really was some work, but very worth it!
Your directions and descriptions are clear and understandable. Great mugs! Thanks for the tips. 😁
Glad it was helpful! Thank you so much for the kind words, it means so much to me 🩷
Thanks Lisa. Good video . Mug is so beautiful shape.
Thank you! I appreciate the comment, glad you enjoyed it
The blue is a definite improvement over the previous color! I am so envious of your studio. 🥰
Oh thank you! I think so too and I find it’s actually easier to clean!
That was so interesting to learn, I will definitely be doing this experiment. There is so much to be learned. Thanks for sharing Lisa. I can't wait to see the handles go on as I am a newbee and love to see everyones methods.
Thank you so much for this comment! It’s makes me so happy to share this craft and I learn so much on here too!
Thanks for the experiment !
You bet! You’re more than welcome 🙏
Awesome
Thank you!!
I wish the platter had held up because it would be a great serving dish.
@@jaydelo7346 don’t worry, I’ll be giving it another shot here soon!
Thx a bunch for the learning tip! I’ve never thrown anything that big so I have no advice but I was hoping it would work for you!
@@loreliemiller628 thanks!!! I’ve got some ideas for the next one that I’m feeling pretty good about, I’ll definitely share more!
Wow great job! I’m thinking you have your red seal in carpentry? Sure interested in how your wood counter holds up to moisture
That is so kind of you to say! Definitely don’t have a red seal, I just learned what I could through CZcams! I am certainly keeping an eye on the counters, but I have good confidence in the finish I used, just not sure if I’ll need to reapply or not. We will see! I’ll definitely share if they buckle or warp 😊
Awesome large forms, thanks for sharing. I would love to see how you make your plaster bats. I've never used one but it deems they could be quite useful.
Thank you so much!! I’ll definitely try to do a quick tutorial video on marking them. It’s easy just messy, but they last forever. I have yet to break one.
One of your best videos. The explanation of techniques like holding the thumb on the outer edge and praying at 6 o'clock was most interesting. Also I loved the goose and dog story.
Thank you so so much! Glad you enjoyed it
Gorgeous platter! Can’t wait to see it finished. Would love a tutorial on how to make the plaster bats
Thank you so much! For the bats I really just mix up some pottery plaster and use drip trays (for planters) as a mold. It’s super simple (messy of course) but I’ll work on a video on it hopefully soon!
@@Lisa.Riland okay thanks. It looked like the bottom has a texture or are both sides smooth? And how thick do you make them? Great videos
Yeah, the texture on the bottom comes from the mold and then the top is smooth. It would probably be fine if both sides were smooth, but most drip trays you’ll find have a raised pattern, so the plaster forms around that. I have some that are about 3/4in (18mm) and others that are about 1/2 in (12mm) and both work well.
Good video. Tanks.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it
Wow how clever are you. I'd love to ve able to build my own shelves, cabinets etc. I'm so envious of woman who can do cabinetry work. When I was growing up and leaving school girls had to do the female type jobs secretary nursing etc. Blah Well done. What part of the world are you from. Good luck
Thank you so much! I’m in Northern Colorado, and grew up in the era that promoted a lot of math and science for girls. I was able to take Woodshop in middle school even! I’ve always had a passion for figuring out it how to make things. Thanks for the comment! What part of the world are you from?
@@Lisa.Riland I live I Canberra, Australia. I love timber and so wanted to do wood work. But... girls did home economics at school to learn to bake and sew. The boys had wood work and metal work. So was then told you can't do that because you're a girl. WOW....thank goodness things have changed somewhat. Take care
I actually wish I had better baking and sewing skills! My mom is an amazing quilter and she’s tried teaching me, at some point when clay and wood get to heavy I plan to do more with fabrics. So great to meet you!
@@Lisa.Riland a domestic goddess I am not. I prefer to be outside in garden and playing with clay. Only very new in the clay world. I take a fortnightly class at a studio. It's work self directed at ones own pace. Working on what you want in handbuilding. So it's been fun learning about it all. The clay types, glazing, kiln work etc. There are so many variables. So it's practice makes one better and we keep building on that. As there's so much to learn. Take care
There certainly is never a shortage of things to learn in ceramics! Isn’t it great to have CZcams!?! What a resource I wish I had when I was getting started.
I like the blue. ❤ So meticulous in the trimming phase.
Thanks!! I like it too ☺️
I’m crossing my fingers the paint stays put! Lovely big bowls
Me too!!! I think the splash pan is most at risk for chipping or pealing but I’ll keep you posted!
Thanks so much for the tips!
You are so welcome! I hope it helps!!
I really enjoy watching you throw. You definitely have some skills. Your first bowl is exactly what 95% of my bowls turn out like. I think I continuously pull my walls too thin and then they cant support the weight of the bowl. I don't get as much practice as I need right now but I will get better at that too. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much! It’s definitely hard to pull thin walls and also bring them out wide at the same time. I hope you are able to get more time in on the wheel soon!
It is great watching the techniques that you are using while you are talking about them. Not an easy thing to do and focus on the art.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Cool 200 gramm volume
Thank you!
So cool😮
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it 😊
I love the frog vase, what a great idea and the form is beautiful. Thanks for sharing and looking forward to the next one!
Thanks so much! When I finally get it fired I’ll show the finished piece 😊
Very new potter here and I just found your channel. I enjoyed your video and look forward to learning a lot from you. Your first day back was impressive in my eyes.
Thanks and welcome! Let me know if there is anything specific you would like me to do a video about. I love this craft so much and if I can help you on the journey at all I would feel so honored!
Beautifully centered!
Thank you! I really appreciate your comment!
I am about to vent mine too. How did you connect two flex pipes together? Did you tape them together or did you use a metal connector with a clamp to join them?
That’s great! I used an aluminum coupler that you can find in the hardware store in the HVAC section and the hose clamps on each side just like how I connected it under the kiln if you saw that part. Just make sure you get the right size for your hose. Hope that helps!
Awesome as usual.
Thank you so much!!
My son is 7 and just got his first wheel and has fallen in love with this craft
Thats amazing! I fell in love with it about the same age but had to wait till I was in high school before I was able to get on a wheel. So happy for him, so many great life lessons in pottery.
Reminds me of clay (person) being molded (pressure) by the Potter (God). All to create a beautiful creation, like you have.
Wow, thank you! So kind of you to reply and I 100% agree :)
Very nice to watch. Thank you!! 😊
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for the kind words, it means a lot to me!
Appears as though the vent fan is on an extension cord. May I suggest running a romax through a switch?
Yes! That’s a great idea, it’s definitely not ideal right now, certainly wish it had come with a longer power cord but I like your idea. Thanks!
Wonderful work!
You are amazing! is there anything you don't try to do yourself! Loved the video
Thank you so so much! There are a few things I won’t try, but not too much 😊
