Found 1 F'n Bolt After Replacing My First Head Gasket And Driving The Previa Only 52 Miles...
My auto repair-tainment first ever head gasket replacement appeared to have failed after only 52 miles when I discovered a new coolant drip on the driveway. Looking under the car, I saw a brand new 'goldish' bolt staring down from me on the backside of the water pump and instantly realized the new water pump clam shell housing was seeping coolant.
So far, the new head gasket is going great - now at 135 miles including 40+ miles of local highway 65-80 mph sustained driving. Although I am still waiting to run a full tank of gas curing the new head gasket before putting the pedal to the floor driving our beloved Floki adventure van.
Follow along on 'hopefully' my final video update in the 1994 Toyota Previa LE SC AllTrac head gasket / water pump replacement series - be sure to watch Previa Mahyem, Previa Mayhem 2 - Heater Hosed, and Previa Mayhem 3 - Head Gasket videos as well.

The best part is just knowing that you did it all yourself. I've done 4 sets of headgaskets in my life. 3 of them were Fords🤣 They all run great. The only aftermarket radiators that I have found that dont explode after 3 months are from 1800 Radiators. They have a huge warehouse in Austin and they ship fast.

You have the same exhaust i have, i have a 02 v70xc though, i like that exhaust, everyone else hates it lol. I been getting same problems, my throttle body is only 4 years old though but one cold morning i went to go to work and i heard a crack like glass cracking, i didn't think anything of it but then the yellow light came on saying reduced engine performance and i could only go 15 mph and i got to a parking lot and just parked it and walked to work, got back and started car and everything was fine and i shrugged it off as it was just the cold, then i went to store and seen a bunch of white smoke coming from my exhaust and got to store and shut off and seen white smoking just coming out of exhaust, it was weird, i thought my head gasket blew or something and i kept my car at store and had my friends help me get it, drove home without any smoke. Now i get the P2131 code in the background and my throttle behaves oddly, my mechanic is telling me my throttle body is failing but its only 4 years old and it is a bosch and so im thinking it just needs cleaned but i think he just doesn't want to do all the work getting it out and it actually does need replaced and him putting it back in and id have to get a new one anyways. I am trying to talk him into cleaning it though.

i don't know if the spacer is strictly necessary. i have a 302 f150 with a carburetor, and i put on an aluminum intake and a phenolic spacer. it's necessary for that because with ethanol in the gas nowadays the carburetor can get vapor locked and stop sucking gas, so it has to stay cool. it's also in the middle of a v8 with a big air cleaner above it, so it's in a fairly heat prone area - on purpose, because the engine was originally designed with a cast iron intake that took forever to heat up in the winter, so much so that they piped exhaust into the intake manifold to gather up some heat. that being said, on these turbo volvos with an intercooler, there is cold, high volume air piped directly into the intake through the throttle body. that's going to remove a lot of the heat. also, aluminum is conductive enough that it's good at collecting heat, but it's also good at dispersing heat. the throttle body is located somewhat far away from the valve train and the exhaust, so it's not likely to get too warm, i would guess. the heat also has to travel through 2 gaskets and 12" of metal to get there. the computer, meanwhile, is probably built to withstand 350 degrees anyway, as that's the average temperature under the hood during operation. the spacer won't hurt anything either but just wanted to say in case anyone watching this gets worried about it. personally i think the original design is ok as it is, though a little cumbersome to work on

1996 OBDII was required. Roughly half the cars had it in 1995. Some cars models in 1995 had both such as the Mustang 3.8l was obd II but the 5.0l was obd I. Some 1993 Nissans had a OBD II port but I don't know if they worked and followed the protocol. Some cars had both OBD I and II ports depending what system you needed to access like trans, airbag or pcm.

What you're pointing to is not the variable valve intake timing. The VVT is on the front, or the opposite end of the engine. I have a 2004 XC70 AWD T5 and mine has both an intake and exhaust camshaft position sensors. I'm not how your vehicle can drive without them. Also; please use caution driving from Dallas back to Colorado. Highway 287 is a known spot for cops to bust people for drugs.

    • @jamiecars
      @jamiecars Před 4 měsíci

Correct - Working on the Cam Position Sensor (Exhaust) - which allows the computer to know where the cam is positioned with the corresponding VVT (Exhaust). This 2002 V70 2.4 T only has VVT / Cam Position Sensor on the exhaust side of the engine. Hwy 287 Simple Solution: don't drive with drugs in the car :)

Those silicone hoses aren't doing you any favors. When hoses cannot expand, they find the weakest point to leak at. Or in your case, at the clamp. Genuine rubber hoses are designed to expand and constrict as the engine heats up and cools down. For this particular hose, that worm-gear style clamp is okay. However, in other areas, it is not recommended because it does not allow the hoses to expand, and digs into the hoses, thereby weakening them. The OEM hoses are known as Oetiker clamps. These do allow the hoses to have somewhat flexibility, yet still prevent leaking.

When using vida you should keep a charger on the battery, it activates all the modules and gobbles the battery power in short order. You need a very healthy fully charged battery to run the volvo 5 cyl, it doesn't like low volts, the computer won't play. The engine will run but set a CEL if off 2 teeth,.

To get to the banjo bolt....next time, use a few extensions and go from the bottom of the vehicle... It's dirty but much easier to put on and take off.

I had replaced the brake position sensor but one of the contacts was slightly askew and not making full contact inside the connector. Dynamic replaced the aftermarket unit with Volvo OEM as well. It's been working perfect since March 2023.

I just did this PCV job. The coolant that flows through the metal pipe is hot to prevent the oil/water vapors from freezing if you live in freezing temps. That is why there is a PTC nipple that also heats up the vapors prior it going through the turbo. You can stick a long nylon straw cleaner up that metal pipe at both ends and if you do not see any oil residue then you do not need to change the pipe and just change the hard PCV nipple hose with a ID 4mm heater hose. You must use OET clamps where there is high pressure air flow so that would be from the 2 hoses attached to the oil trap box.

Replaced relay CM122 on CEM under dashboard (No indication of meters on dashboard and no functioning Climate control panel) Fuse 24 was intact! Everything on the dashboard was down!! So I don't understand why you immediately replaced the dashboard without looking for the cause. It is possible that the relay temporarily makes contact and you think that replacing the dashboard will solve the problem!! A good check is whether the Auto climate panel has also failed.

This was the 2nd DIM Cluster replacement - first was 7/2019. Same symptoms - no cluster information with car running/driving. The Climate Control panel was working normally. This is a common failure for the earlier P2's. XemodeX rebuilds install an improved heat-sink to reduce heat damage inside their DIM - it is plug & play and has worked perfectly since install. :)

Take the ipd TCV off the other car before it fails. Stay OEM, it’s not an upgradable part and the ipd unit is known to fail.

Interesting. The V70 2.4T lacked it's prior power so I installed a turbo boost gauge and confirmed it was barely hitting 6psi and any subsequent pull would only reach 4-5psi. I was told this was a sign of a failing OEM TCM. I installed the IPD TCM 2+ years ago and it consistently and repeatedly hits 8-10psi - every pull. Power is much improved since installing the IPD TCM. What symptoms should I be looking for if the 2+yr old IPD TCM starts to fail? This video's XC70 still has OEM TCM and hasn't experienced any of the power loss like the V70 2.4T.

@@jamiecarsit’s a simple solenoid that’s controlled by the ecm, the OEM unit can fail over time but it was probably the lines had a vacuum leak. The ecm will limit boost if it can’t reliably control the psi. Inside the ipd unit is plastic and it cracks after enough heat cycles. Most R tuners won’t even touch a car with one.

I just posted a video of this PCV fix too. The other issue you may be having with the variable valve timing is that when you install the timing belt, you must hold the toothed-belt gear (on the end of the VVT unit) until it bottoms out in one direction (can't remember off the top of my head which way, it has been a long time) If you don't hold that toothed belt-gear over, the timing will be off. There are several other CZcams videos outlining the procedure. If you did that and still have an issue then I apologize for sticking my nose in here. Nice detailed video of the PCV hose change. All the best. New subscriber here. Craig

Sad to see CO adapt tighter SMOG limits on a 30 year car. Was the old version CAT that much different or just cost more in paper work. CA has CATs that are $800 vs the common $150 price. They both do the same and get tested every 2 years too.

I replaced the Toyota OEM Cats several years ago with non-OEM / non-CARB units. CO moved to CARB requirement 2023 so those cheap CAT options are no longer available. With our growing population, I am fine to spend extra $$$ to keep our beautiful blue sky and outdoor environments in tip-top condition. I think the larger issue for the new 2023 CARB requirements are for all of the modified cars running custom tunes outside of their OEM specifications - been hearing some interesting stories of expiring / locked-out registrations during annual emission testing...

@arsBlue sky, out door environments in tip-top condition and chemtrails don't compute. 🤫Isn't the CAT a solution looking for a problem imposed by the government? BTW. there is no growing population in the west. Quite the opposite. Unless the border patrol is not on duty and your country flooded with illegals. 😉

Having same issues with my 07 xc70, with the cover off the timing and how you showed the exhaust VVT gear was wiggly, grab it with both hands and see it it moves in and out, not up and down. If up and down then cam bearings are gone and that would be rare, if it moves in and out, its time for a new one, replacing my as we speak. Hopefully it helps and you get it back running such great cars. ✌🏼💚🙏🏻
