The Top 8 Reasons Your Gas Mileage Sucks!
8 Main Causes of Poor Gas Mileage
Despite gains in fuel efficiency and technology, a variety of factors can contribute to poor gas mileage. If you want to improve the fuel economy of your car, truck, or SUV, you may be able to save money at the pump. Here are some of the leading causes of low gas mileage in new and older vehicles.
Causes of poor gas mileage:
1. Incorrect tire pressure is a leading cause of poor gas mileage. It is also one of the easiest things to fix. Regularly monitoring your tires with an inexpensive pressure gauge is a smart method to catch this. Just make sure to utilize the car manufacturer's suggested pressure levels stamped on the driver's side doorplate rather than the "maximum pressure" numbers shown on the tire.
2. Poor oxygen sensors and air filters can impair gas mileage by up to 20%. The oxygen sensors help to maintain the right mixture of air and fuel, and an imbalance might be inefficient. Clogged air filters require unclogging to rectify the issue. Cleaning the air filters is necessary to ensure optimal engine performance.
3. Spark plugs initiate combustion in your engine. If they misfire or fail to function properly, your gas mileage may suffer.
4. Poor fuel injectors might lead to poor mileage. This is because the fuel injectors are in charge of delivering fuel to the engine. If there is a leak, less fuel will enter the engine, causing it to run inefficiently.
5. Running your air conditioner wastes gas. Depending on your climate, consider shutting off the air conditioner when it makes sense and riding with the windows open. However, at greater speeds, close the windows to reduce drag.
6. Your driving habits can contribute to poor mileage. If you are an aggressive driver, you are prone to accelerating too quickly. This utilizes more fuel and consumes more gas than necessary. The same applies to revving your engine. It may sound nice, but it wastes gas by traveling nowhere.
7. Idling is a common way to waste gas. Idling occurs when your engine is running, but you are stationary and not moving. This is most prevalent when you're attempting to warm up your car in the cold or waiting to pick someone up. Your car's engine needs no more than 30 seconds to warm up. When you're waiting for someone, turn off your car. Since you're not going anywhere, you might as well save gasoline and the environment.
8. Using the right motor oil can improve gas mileage by up to 12%. You want to utilize motor oils that are effective in reducing friction. You can either use synthetic oil or the recommended oil from the car's manual.
Overall, these are the most typical causes of low gas mileage, but the list is considerably longer. However, we must also consider the weight of the vehicle. Carrying excess cargo or unnecessary objects causes strain on your engine, so reduce the weight wherever possible. If you want to minimize or eliminate your fuel consumption, consider a plug-in. Electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) have evolved greatly in recent years and may be beneficial to some types of drivers.
So, there you have it! By addressing these 8 main causes of bad gas mileage, you can improve your vehicle's efficiency, save money, and even reduce your carbon footprint. Remember, regular maintenance and smart driving habits are your best allies in the quest for better fuel economy.

    A shop, recently replaced the upstream 02 sensor twice. After I scanned it at Autozone, the results say the sensor is having a slow response. Should I buy a more expensive 02 sensor? The car feels like it is very sluggish, and check engine light only comes on when driven / car is warmed up.

    • @exoniviews
      @exoniviews Před 3 měsíci

      The issue might not necessarily be the cost of the oxygen sensor you replaced, but rather the root cause of the slow response. Before investing in a more expensive sensor, it will be wise to investigate other potential factors contributing to the sluggishness, such as air or fuel delivery issues. Additionally, addressing why the check engine light only comes on when the car is warmed up could provide further insight into the problem. I suggest you get a professional mechanic to assist.

Considering your annual cold weather P0107 code issue on your '08 Pontiac Vibe, despite ruling out common causes like vacuum leaks and faulty O2 sensors, you should also consider checking the intake air temperature sensor and try cleaning the mass airflow sensor, as it might be sensitive to cold conditions affecting air-fuel mixture. My Škoda makes water gurgling noise from dashboard on ignition for 3/4 seconds and normal thereafter Any likely cause and remedy please?

    • @exoniviews
      @exoniviews Před 9 měsíci

      Ok, It sounds like the gurgling noise from your Škoda's dashboard during ignition might be related to trapped air in the cooling system. This can happen when there's air trapped in the heater core or coolant lines. A common remedy is to "burp" the cooling system to remove air pockets. Here's what you can try: Make sure the engine is cold: Never open the radiator or coolant reservoir cap when the engine is hot to avoid burns. Park on a level surface: Ensure your car is on a flat and level surface. Open the coolant reservoir cap: Slowly open the coolant reservoir cap (if equipped) to release any pressure. Inspect coolant level: Check the coolant level in the reservoir. If it's low, add a mixture of coolant and water to the recommended level. Start the engine: Start the engine and let it run until it reaches normal operating temperature. Keep an eye on the coolant reservoir during this time. Bleed the system: Sometimes, there are bleed screws or valves near the heater core or on the coolant lines. Consult your Škoda's owner's manual to locate them. If available, open these while the engine is running to release any trapped air. Top off coolant: As the engine runs, the coolant level in the reservoir may drop. Top it off as needed. Close the cap: Once the gurgling noise stops and the engine is at operating temperature, close the coolant reservoir cap securely. Monitor for a few days: Keep an eye on your car for the next few days to ensure the noise doesn't return. If it does, you may need to repeat the process or have a professional inspect the cooling system for any leaks or issues. Remember to follow safety precautions and consult your Škoda's specific manual for guidance. If the issue persists, it's advisable to have a qualified mechanic examine your vehicle to rule out any underlying problems.

      Car repairs have evolved since the 1970s, and some repairs may no longer be as easy or inexpensive as before.

    The engine lite for a failing thermostat only applies to newer vehicles though doesn't it? My van is a 2001 Dodge Ram v8. I don't know if the computer is programmed to indicate a failing thermostat.

      You're correct that the "check engine" light for a failing thermostat is more commonly found in newer vehicles. In older vehicles like your 2001 Dodge Ram v8, the computer systems may not have the specific programming to indicate a failing thermostat. However, that doesn't necessarily mean your thermostat is in perfect condition. If you suspect an issue with your thermostat, it's a good idea to keep an eye on your van's temperature gauge for any abnormal readings or signs of overheating. Additionally, if you notice any other symptoms like poor heater performance or fluctuating engine temperature, it's advisable to have a professional mechanic inspect and potentially replace the thermostat if needed.

      @@exoniviews I do keep an eye on it and it has been replaced not long ago last year or year before . I do automotive courses and I have been doing my own repairs for some years now. I can tell that it is opening by feeling the top radiator hose for pressure and heat and watching the temp gauge.

    I, remove all of the thermostats in all of my vehicles so the run cooler. In the winter months I will put card board in front of the Radiator so I will have warm heat.

    How do I know if it's my thermostat the heating a cooling gauge does bounce up and down not like crazy but slowly then when it goes to over heating and the light comes on I drive a little then pull over and it goes back to half while the car is still running even tho it's saying it's overheating could this be the thermostat and the radiator has a slow leak please help !!!!!!!

      The most common sign of a thermostat failure is overheating. Your car's thermostat may become stuck closed due to corrosion or age. The thermostat won't let coolant get to the radiator if this happens. Your engine could overheat. Make sure your radiator is clean, not leaking, and that the fan works properly.

    Remember the orientation. Better be on site while a mechanic swap your older one. They are humans too. Humans make mistake. Happened to me very recently when my car still overheating (even worse) after changed to a new thermostat. My mechanic put it in backwards. Thank God I found it.
