Weird when people are like “I’m ready to try not to like it” with Korean artists. Like, really? You’re gonna dismiss so much good music for what and for who? Do people think it’s cool to hate on every single popular thing still, or anything different from US charts? And not everything popular in Korea is “idol k pop” and shallow/generic. They made their own lanes and have outsold/gained more fans than so many western artists. Members of BTS are truly one of the only groups I know who have consistently made amazing music without always sounding the same or sticking to one genre or subject. You’re missing out if you’re not coming in with open minds and just appreciating music. It’s about how the lyrics and songs make you feel, not what other people assume about them. Or what you think you should say to sound “too cool” to admit BTS members are straight talented. Stop sleeping. This group has some of the best vocalists, rappers, and albums I’ve ever heard. And that’s not even mentioning their live performances.

if you were looking for something different with Korean rap, JK's bandmate RM released a critically acclaimed new album about a month ago called "Right Place, Wrong Person" that has five MVs from songs on the album. BTS as a group also incorporates rap in almost all of their songs, because they have 3 rappers and four vocalists in the group. JK himself is a sub-rapper and a main vocalist of the group. One comment - going into BTS with the attitude of "I thought I was going to be listening to some Korean shit" isn't exactly great. BTS are known for their deep and meaningful lyrics that touch on issues like mental health, societal issues, the need to love oneself, etc...and yes, they largely do it in Korean because that's their native language. RM speaks English fluently, but the rest are learning and are at various levels of ability to speak it (I think most can pick up a fair amount of what they hear, but speaking a language that is not your own is always harder). JK's purpose with his album "Golden" was to reach towards his goal of being the only artist to be a top artist in both K-pop and [western] Pop. The whole album is in English, and it was written and produced by western writers/producers. JK chose all of the songs for the album, but while he does write/produce songs for BTS and for himself (such as his latest single "Never Let Go" released a couple of weeks ago), he didn't write/produce this one.

Ok, as others said, this is very much not K-pop but American pop - just performed by a Korean artist. This song was a homage to MJ, so it makes sense that it seems "copied" because it is heavily inspired by MJ. It was written and produced by Americans. Although, K-pop was inspired a lot by American music in general. If you want to listen to "K-pop" from BTS, avoid their English trilogy (Dynamite, Butter and Permission to Dance). They are great songs but completely in English and mostly written by English-speaking producers and songwriters. They are some of the only songs BTS members didn't take part in writing or producing (except Butter - RM took part in it) Also, JK is indeed a member of BTS - he is their main vocalist. They are not only the biggest K-pop group but the biggest group in the world. BTS stands for 방탄소년단 (Bangtan Sonyeondan). They are a 7-member group with 3 rappers and 4 vocalists. They debuted in 2013 and are currently on a hiatus to complete their mandatory military service (the oldest finished a few days ago) but still release music as soloists. They write, compose and produce their music along with their in-house producers. They come from a very small label and reached the top without industry support. They shine because of their good music, meaningful lyrics, incredible live performances and their humble and caring personalities. They all are extremely successful soloists as well, experimenting with different styles just like they do with BTS. If you want to listen to K-rappers you can listen to RM, Agust D (SUGA in BTS) and j-hope. The BTS Rap Line is the best in the K-pop industry but their vocalists (Jin, Jimin, V and Jung Kook) are just as good If you want to learn more about them you could watch Boracity Magazine's video essays. They are well-researched and really interesting to know more about the music industry If you check out some of their Korean music, you should pull out Doolset's translation on the side. They are accurate translations and give context and cultural references that you won't get. Their lyrics are a huge part of their success so it would be great if you took the extra step! I could tell you more but this is already a lot, haha. I hope you guys will enjoy their music

Hey guys as a fellow Aussie I can pretty much guarantee that if you listen to the radio you’ll probably have heard Jungkook before without realising it. You should definitely check out Too Much his collab with The Kid Laroi & Central Cee & his other singles Seven featuring Latto & 3D featuring Jack Harlow, they are also all in English, just like all the tracks from his debut album Golden. Jungkook is a global superstar in the making in his own right, he also performed his song Dreamers at the opening of the 2022 FIFA World Cup but sadly he is currently serving his mandatory military service in the Korean Army.

If you play BigHit intro you can play the song without skipping! Yeah, his vocals are next level. He can rap, sing, do any genre for real. He'll go live for fans and take request and karaoke for hours. Pretty phenomenal. I caution you about labeling him KPOP. The song is in English, produced by American producers and the only thing Korean about it is the person singing. It is just POP. His entire Golden album is in English and varies in styles. His has written songs that are awesome too including My Time, Begin, Still With You. Highly recommend you check out Live versions with Eng Subs. Don't forget to turn on subs for any of their content. Just google the name of the song, followed by "Eng Subs" and you get options. The channel "Enjoy BTS More" on YT works hard to fit accurate subs with live performances and each member, as well as the group, are always better LIVE. Especially Jungkook. He is better live than in studio, his ad libs on songs are gorgeous. Each member has been realizing solo work so it is a fun time to explore their very different styles in music. But also BTS in general. One of the best things about the members and the group is how versatile they are. No genre seems to be off limit. They just sing and present songs in whatever style that fits the message they are going for at the time. Pretty epic. You saw the vids with Latto and Harlow. I recommend Seven with Latto MV. There is one for this and also one for the video he did with Usher too. They are usually on Bangtantv called Bangtan Bombs. If you get into BTS, and want to sample KPOP as well... please be cautious about calling BTS KPOP. You may like BTS and KPOP but BTS began as HipHop then added vocals and choreo of KPOP a time when that wasn't really done. As a result they were shunned by both the HipHop world (who considered them sell outs and falsely assumed they wouldn't be part of the creative process) and shunned by the KPOP world (who considered them too free and non-conformist to the unrealistic KPOP Idol standards). BTS said screw it, we will do what we want to do. They did and they did it well, now KPOP tries to emulate the BTS styles, so you will see things similar now. But 90%+ of KPOP groups are still not allowed or do not participate in the creative process. Not that they don't work extremely hard under incredibly difficult conditions with those unrealistic expectations. But BTS legit specifically tried to stand up against it and say IDOLS are people too. The KPOP industry actively tried to keep them down by blocking them from media and broadcasts and their Korean search engine. So it gets touchy that they are now trying to claim them. BTS can do Uber Pop songs but also go Uber raw and dark. It is a fun journey. For a good BTS starting place for real, check out Born Singer. They wrote it on the beat of JCole's Born Sinner (11 years ago). It gives a good insight into their mindset and one of the many ways they mix vocals and rap. When JHOPE (one of the rappers) was headlining at Lollapalooza in 2022, he met JCole. Within the year they had a collab (a going away gift from JHOPE to his fans before he entered the military) and Cole gave them permission to include this song on their Anthology album. This stage mix is a fan fave and doesn't get taken down.
