      @shamsgardeningcrafts the pot is not very big as the compost mix is only an inch and a half off the bottom of the pot. I would hope in the next four weeks it's roots will expand and the plant gets alot bigger. I thought it was interesting to read about the Egyptian guava has a very slow growth rate in the initial seedling stage, that would explain 8 months of practically no growth on this plant, and then it has an accelerated growth stage, which I hope it's at now.

  • @RussellBooth1977
    @RussellBooth1977 Před 12 dny

    Yes,a papaya plant that size won't survive outdoors in the U.K. over winter time, you will have to bring it indoors with your banana 🍌 plants or place them in a greenhouse for frost protection. A couple of my larger Papaya plants which I have been growing in the backyard in Australia I have had to cut the tops off because they got frost burn bur they will bush out this summer. I live in a part of Australia where the winters are relatively mild & the papaya plants which I have been growing in the front yard on an easterly aspect which means that the sun melts the frozen dew off the leaves have survived through this winter over here. The papaya plants love the heat over here in summer time since they're native to Mexico !

    • @louiseahmedtropicalplantgr5000
      @louiseahmedtropicalplantgr5000 Před 12 dny

      @RussellBooth1977 I envy the weather you have over there. I did manage to grow a mountain papaya from seed and got it to flower and produce tiny fruit, and then I was away for 6 weeks and the plant suffered and eventually died. Definitely I will bring it indoors before the cold weather starts. Problem with growing indoors is the spidermite issue.

  • @PeterEntwistle
    @PeterEntwistle Před 13 dny

    Your new banana and papaya plants seem to be doing well Louise! I definitely need to repot some of mine as they are still in the original pots, which I think is holding back the Helen's Hybrid banana. Your basjoo should survive if it's overwintered in the ground, although it might not have enough time to develop its roots at this time of year. I planted one quite late last year in my front garden and it froze to the ground, but thankfully it came back because the corms are very hardy on these. In a pot, I probably wouldn't risk it, unless it's in a very sheltered spot.

    • @louiseahmedtropicalplantgr5000
      @louiseahmedtropicalplantgr5000 Před 12 dny

      @PeterEntwistle I've nowhere to put the Musa basjoo in ground except for my front garden a narrow strip which gets the most sun but not much shelter as only a small fence to the side. The back garden gets a bit wet and boggy during winter, I think if I planted it there the corm would rot. If I can over winter it and the pups survive I may try and plant one in ground near my plum tree which died a couple of winters back and that part is a bit drier due to the tree roots.

  • @lyonheart84

    You can grow little miss figgy outside Louise, they are simply more advanced because they were probably grown under glass to get them bigger to sell all summer. Nice to see figs ripening on those 'Little Miss Figgy' trees, Louise. Annoyingly the second was also damaged, but I didn't bother taking it any further. They haven't grown much at all for me. I probably need to repot them really. I agree about getting airlayered plants in the future and or mature seed grown like mangos. The nursery in Dhaka Gulshan had hundreds,of seed grown mangos which were set aside for grafting purposes and were not for sale. Some were already flowering. Lovely new plants, Louise and thanks for the mention too! That Musa sikkimensis was a great size. For the Musas I would use a good quality potting compost with some perlite for drainage. I can't advise much with the papaya as I've not had much luck with them in the past lol 😂

      Thanks Peter, I'll get some compost tomorrow . I'll probably use the same type for the papaya too, and I've got plenty of perlite for drainage.

    Always exciting to see flowers that aren't expected appear on a relatively new plant. Like Peter my yuzu has shown no sign of flowers this year 🙄

      @lyonheart84 I've been giving the citrus potassium as well as the nitrogen feed so that may have helped it with flower buds I think

    Very exciting to see flowers developing on your Yuzu, Louise! I've not seen any flowers on mine yet, but it has grown a lot.

    Great to see your Paan Betel Leaf is recovering Louise. My black pepper (Piper Nigrum) has defoliated after overwintering in my conservatory and there has been significant vine dieback. Most of the vine is still green and it looks like new leaves are struggling to grow. I have looked, but it does nor appear to be a root issue so I am at a bit of a loss. I will take a leaf out of you book and spray it with a solution of miracle grow and hope for the best.

      @myexoticfoodplants6727 what compost are you using for the P. Nigrum Michael. I've got mine in just orchid bark. As you know mine almost completely died back and its recovery has been slow. I water frequently as the orchid bark does not hold onto the moisture so I keep the pot moist but not soaking wet

      @@louiseahmedtropicalplantgr5000 I am using orchid bark mixed with “Special Mix” (a blend of peat cut from a thick structure of high-quality perlite, suede clay, lemon and minerals Organic fertiliser. It incorporated high quality virgin white peat from Sweden, this soil can absorb a large amount of water, up to 10g of water.)

    A great haul Louise. I'd say papaya is my clear favourite fruit although the giant ones are fairly pricey around here 😁

      The papaya was quite pricey Brett at £5 but it is a hefty size and it feels heavy. The Atemoya was £3 and I think the Assamese Nemu or lime was about £2. They are seedless from what I can remember, when I brought one back from Bangladesh 2 years ago.

    Hope they do root eventually Louise. Can't say I have much luck with rooting hardwood cuttings in water, only softwood cuttings of certain types of plants. Although figs do root for me in water 😁
