2:38 dude, didn't you jntseview Brad Divens a few months ago? He was the singer/bass player in the bands he was in prior to doing sound...
Dumb question: Is Nick holding a coffee cup that looks like a camera lens (in the opening sequence)? If so, WHERE did you get that?!?!
Amazon!
Just saw Staptelon at T-mobile arena last night.. Best sounding show I've ever heard in that arena so I had to come learn about the legend that made it happen
35:48 nice advice
Thom is the chillest dude, so humble, so funny, so skilled. What a legend!
Celebrate ! 🎉🎉🎉
Sleep Token's sound and lighting are second to none. I saw Sleep Token at Sonic Temple and I was blown away by everything. Keep up the amazing work Thom and crew.
I LOVE this interview. I do have a comment that I would like some feedback from folks on here. They specifically made comments about people relying too much on plugins instead of the source. I completely agree. AT THE SAME TIME... look at the amount of outboard gear he is having to use to get the sound he wants! It is literally no different than plugins. He is using 6 processing units JUST FOR DRUMS. 2 SLSL Bus plus, The portico and more compression. He has the luxury off having all of those pieces of gear on a tour like this. BUT what about those in installed setups or on smaller tours or in a house of worship? The plugin world (whether it is Waves, UAD, or Live Professor with PA or something similar) allows engineers to do the same thing on a much more cost effective way. It is not perfect by any means but it is def the next best thing if you can't have access to all of that outboard. He is using at least $30k in outboard processors for the band inputs and groups. I am absolutely sure it sounds amazing and would love that but I think it is super easy to trash on the plugin world but what is the alternative to not having these massive amounts of outboard channel processing? For real, thoughts about this?
you are gold! please ask people to subscribe just like Rick Beato does, stop the video few times with a message... \m/
There were probably 10 times watching this I almost couldn't believe it was real it was so amazing seeing, hearing and learning everything especially being new to what I say for me sound engineering (speaker/area sound nut so mixing:P). Thank you so much Nick and Nate for making and sharing this! And I've already been thinking/planning to have certain shows that are 18+ bc kids are cool but not all the time, now I'm definitely all about planning certain show that are all analog with old school everything with everyone artists vs the new digital shortcuts that I'm still about using at other larger 'kid friendly' arena shows (not that I'm anything but a garage kid right now! lol). Thanks again 🤘
The two primary reasons I'm learning audio engineering is I'm almost obsessed with crushing the fans live and I want total control as much I can have as a playing musician over the sound while I'm playing. Thank you this amazing video Nick and Eddie, I barely joined my local IATSE the 31st and am just starting to learn to mix live and will soon find a school to get a certification from - any suggestions for certifications and or school for AE? Thanks again!
❤
The sound guy. Yeah be friends with him At every venue or sound girl. Lol not everyone is good at the job but they surely can make you sound terrible if they want. Or just completely off lol I used to play drums for a bigger band and I had this one sound guy that loved me lol don’t know why, I guess I was nice or… but he made my kick drum punch. When the double hit, it punched you in the face haha! And I felt it on the stage. Respect!🙌 be nice to your sound guy but like on purpose stop being a dick.
I’m a bass player that is a sound mixer now 😆
I was at this show. So incredible. They sound so amazing live!
I found this interview crazy, I live in wales myself, and know Lucas who is the frontman for holding absence, and to think their audio lad is now the guy for sleeptoken is crazy, and to think sleep token were a supporting act for them is mind boggling, shows the blow up they have had. Thought I recognised Thom as the drummer from falling with style
Thom, you’re a literal fkn legend. This band is obviously insanely talented, and you *perfectly* honor them with the way you mix. Every. Single. Time. I see them live - my jaw is in the fucking floor because of YOU - the way you make them sound. Thank you, truly. 🙏🏼
Incredible interview. Best yet. And what ana amazing human he is.
Love the way of thinking of this dude, immediately subscribed
Happens to those who care about their craft, hits us all time to time.
That's the one difference between audio and most fields. Everyone is very interactive and helpful. No huge egos and a huge knowledge base willing to try to help and learn for each other. Good topic Nick, needs more bringing up between audio guys. Make this question a regular!
I AM A SOUNDMAN AND A BASS PLAYER LOL!!!!
You all need to check out Holding Absence if you’ve not already.
AUTO TUNE , a la vena
very good point with the autocriticism...i am 45 and i still beat myself..gotta let go..thanks guys! watched all the videos thank you Nick and your guests!
Spiritually horny metal
The intro is pretty cool. I noticed it a couple minutes in. It was like the minutes leading up to an eclipse. And the synths gave it an eery feeling.
Hey Alex you’re the best cya soon
I'm a vocalist and a guitarist and I am just as good at doing the whole music production process from recording to mixing and mastering.
I wanna here from that dude in the yellow shirt
Haven't heard Alex mix but have heard nothing but great things. Love his approach, minimalistic and similar to myself doing rooms where you're finding work arounds for mic bleed and compromised balance due to what's coming off stage. Ronnie came through my venue in Brisbane and def made our V rig sing. All the best, cheers.
I'm a bass player and a sound guy. Keen to talk to you about it😅
Man this was a great talk. Keep em coming please
Markides is the homie! Proud of him
Lol, who uses a mon engineer in 2024, we use our own app and Ipad so we can do our own in ear mix or mon mix............analog period is over.
That snare sound rhough.
Whats the intro song? :x
I met Alex when he was touring with KSE in Europe. Very sweet guy. I was doing FOH for the support band "Heretoir". Had a great chat about the horrible venue acoustics haha. Local technician wasn't very cool so having Alex around at FOH improved the vibe a lot. Also, amazing mix he did for KSE. Absolute class act (the rest of the crew aswell, mons let me tap into Jesse's in-ear mix which was so fun!), hope to meet him again someday!
Pooch is a bass player
Met Alex at a Periphery show in a venue I've mixed before. Blown away. Really made me consider my approach to that room in the future. Great guy too!
Pooch is a Bass Player and a pretty decent soundguy...IIRC 😅
FINALLY!
That intro was way too long.
Shut up!
Hell yes Periphery! Any chance you'll catch up with Bob when Slipknot hit the road again?
To the bass player question. Pooch was/ is a bass player.
That’s true!
Alex is one of the best in the business. I was a few feet from him about a year ago but couldn’t get his attention to say hello
Damn dude! I’m sorry! Yell louder! I’m deaf!
@@darkidesWHAT
@@darkideshope you and the boys come back down under to Australia soon!
Bass players never fail they just become producers
I’m certain this was the show in atl. I was there but not in the shots 😭
You’re correct!
From what I gather, if a failed guitarrist stays in the industry it is as a guitar tech
Definitely not a failed guitar tech there ^
Lol
