Stop Complaining About Writing. Writing is a Choice.
Complaining about writing does nothing for your writing. If you don’t want to write, don’t write. Writers are born and they’re made and the people that become writers and stay writers are the ones who enjoy it. If writing makes you miserable, do something else.

Finishing you novel doesn’t just mean putting The End at the end of your novel manuscript. It requires making sure that everything is correct. That you dot all your Is and cross all your Ts. Don’t waste time sending out subpar novels.

Cut Out the Repetitive Writing
zhlédnutí 22Před 10 měsíci
As writers, we often repeat ourselves. We may do it for emphasis, or for the musicality and style of what we’re writing. It helps us continue writing, and no harm no foul. But that redundant writing is for us-not the reader. Learn to identify repetitive writing so you can cut it out during the editing process. #amwriting #author #writingtips #fiction #novelwriter #writer

Are you a writer? You need to also be a closer.
zhlédnutí 18Před 11 měsíci
Finishing a novel or short story is hard. But if you’re a writer, you also have to be a closer. It does you no good to write something if you never complete it. By that I mean, write your novel or story, revise and edit until it’s as best as you can make it, and then dot all the Is and cross all the Ts, or you’ll never get it published. If it’s a practice run, don’t sweat it. But finish. Finish...
Book Reviews: The Necessary Evils of Them, and Why Not too Put to Much Stock in Them

If you ever written a book, you know what it’s like to get a book reviewed. Book reviews can be great in terms of gaining momentum when you first start out, but they come with a lot of baggage. Reviews can sell your books if they make it to a broad enough audience, but they can also hurt you in the sense of giving you feedback that you don’t necessarily enjoy or want to see. Let's be honest you can do everything that you say here and still you only have a 1% to 2% chance of being picked up by a literary agent. That's what literary agents are now reporting. As one agent put it, prior to the pandemic, and prior to the Internet, the vast majority of novels that they received back then were poorly written, with a few really good gems. Nowadays, nearly all the submissions they get, which are many times higher than what they got 20 years ago, are now all fairly good. But they can still only take 1% to 2% of those that come across their desk. And they must pick that which they know to be a good working formula, with a tested track record. Innovation and individuality doesn't get you very far, in fact it could hurt you. Self publishing is for the young, healthy, and those who have a disposable income. Publishing like so many other things is changing, technology is beginning to render traditional publishing irrelevant. And like music, computer programming, and all the traditional arts, they are dying. Cheap and easily replicated knock-offs are replacing them. A financially strapped working public snaps them up because they can no longer afford real quality. So let's be honest, OK? You can do everything that you have stated in this video or nothing at all and still, the only difference between them is a 1% to 2% chance. But I agree, unless you do it correctly, your chances drop to 0%. It's frustrating.

    I'm writing a mm romance between two large built men. It takes place in 1998. I have researched events (most of which I know, because I was 20). There is a club scene, I've been there, I research the San Francisco Giants game days because a few of those take place, who won the game, when festivals were held, etc. Mine was easy research because I'm from the area. I still had a lot to look up, especially trying to remember 1997, including fashion, what someone would drive, etc.

      Awesome. I have a novel I’ve been planning for a while that takes place in Miami, where I grew up. But it’ll take some time, even with the fact that I grew up there. When you’re in it, you tend to overlook what others see.

    Online query forms: after pasting a query, a synopsis, some agents include a third space to fill...."pitch". But since the query already contains a pitch (as well as comps) I don’t know if I'm expected to repeat my pitch in this space or....what?

    • @novelmasterclass
      @novelmasterclass Před rokem

      It can definitely get a little confusing. But just follow whatever directions the agent provides. You may also get creative and alter the pitch slightly from what’s in the query to show your ability to interest readers via your writing. Agents are people too, so do t stress too much about it. Here’s more if you’d like a more comprehensive answer: medium.com/swlh/the-difference-between-a-pitch-a-query-and-a-submission-888579b4a33

    Hello Mr. Perlman. I have a question. I had thought about self-publishing, but I don't think I will have the time and money to do so, so I'm going more traditional. I am writing a m/m romance through the lens of heavy set guys in the gay community. What should I do if I'm going with a smaller publishing such as Dreamspinner or Pride Publishing? Should I still get an agent or are these publishers I want to contact directly. If I do contact them directly, do I use the same query letter format? Thank you for your time and videos.

    • @novelmasterclass
      @novelmasterclass Před rokem

      Hi Jole, Some smaller publishers accept manuscripts directly from authors. I’d recommend checking out P&W’s search tool in order to get a more comprehensive list of publishers who accept books in your category. You can do that here: www.pw.org/small_presses but you can also just google publishing houses geared towards the LGBTQ community. In terms of using the same type of query, that depends. The smaller houses that accept manuscripts may have their own submission requirements, so check their websites before submitting. If you’re submitting to an agent (the house will tell you if they don’t accept unsolicited submissions, so you’ll need an agent), then yes, go with this type of query letter. Good luck!

    No, that's not what writers block is, it is the inability to come up with something capable of suiting the tale being told, I am a victim of writers block and know just how real it is, especially for novice/beginner writers, I find this to be very insulting to the struggles I've faced in writing.
