I Installed a Brake Light on the Model T
zhlédnutí 551Před 3 lety
Added something that every Model T that is driven on the street needs: A brake light! As I didn't want to drill holes in the body, I fabricated a mount that clamps to the spare tire hub and spokes and included a plug for the power if it needed to be disconnected. A brake light switch kit was sourced from Snyders T & A parts, installed and wired directly to the battery.

I wish I could have gotten my wheels loose that easy. Mine were rusted up when I bought it at a yard sale and I have tried everything even running it for 3 years without the pins and it will not come loose. I even laid it on the side and put PB Blaster on it and tapped it all winter and it never came loose. So, I use it without the pins.
The seal goes in that cavity before the shims and snap ring.
Want to sell it ? I am looking for one to buy. Had the same one growing up
Sorry, it is long gone.
Great 👍
How much are you asking. I am in Guatemala.
The cars are long gone. Sorry.
Nice looking sled. Any idea where I can find parts for a 1970 MS-18?
No clue, my suggestion is to see if you have a vintage snowmobile club in your area. Find out if you have trails locally and who grooms them and hook up with those folks for more info.
I used to make these gears a peerless gear
Nice doing the same project
I am having issues with my grandpa's 1927 T, with a Holley NH carb. It was rebiuld several years ago and had issues when, he put it back on. I have since went through it again and still have an over fueling problem. Where did you get your carb rebuilt at? Or do you have any idea's. Thanks
I THINK it was one of the big names, Snyders? maybe, but would have to take a look at my paperwork to be sure.
My 73 ST16 has the output shaft seal leaking & has for the last year. Went to fix it, & found out it won’t budge. Got a torch to heat it up, & still wouldn’t. Needed something bigger, & just left it alone. I just get the thickest, cheapest oil I can get my hands on or I’ll take some grease, heat it up, then pour it in the fill port, & hope it’ll be fine. It’s got the Hi-Low range 3spd, so it is leaking out the Hi-low range rod, but there’s no parts to fix em. It’s pretty much a game of how many tractors u can get for parts cuz none are available. Got rid of the problematic Tecumseh, & saving my time by getting a predator motor. The $ I’ll spend fixing it & getting it right vs a cheap new engine that’s pull start no battery to drain.
Hello Dale, my horse is a little older I believe. Was handed down to my father from Grandpa and now me. It’s a Trojan Horse with cast iron spoke wheels, serial number 1002 purchased in 1964 by Grandpa. This tiller is same age as me. I too started with replacing seals and ended up doing a near total rebuild, with many happy thoughts about my grandparents along the way! Do you know if the reversing disc on a 1964 is the same? I looked on Parts tree and failed to find the same tiller for the disc part number and what I did find wasn’t available anyway. I have no service manual to go by either. I found a link to the manual a while back but couldn’t find where I saved it. If you can help I would truly appreciate it😊.
It has been quite a while since I did the work and I had get a new phone in the meantime so I lost a bunch of info. I will see if I can find something and post it here if I do.
@@daleolson7205 thanks for trying Dale.. I did find the transmission service manual today on PDF if you ever need that again.
What is the size of your duromax engine?
I think it is a 12 hp, no documentation with it.
I'm so thankful that you made these videos I took mine apart and when I was trying to look inside the case when I cracked it open I dropped it and gears went everywhere but your videos helped me get it back together thank you
Someone did point put that I put the reverse gear in backwards. Doesn't seem to affect the operation at all.
@@daleolson7205 do you still have your tractor? I picked mine up a few days ago and I was curious about how you like it
@@prospectingwithdisabilitie8288 yep, it's really handy for towing around the yard cart, sweeper and lawn roller. I was having issues with the transmission continuing to spin when the clutch was pushed in but an adjustment to the idler pully took care of that.
@@daleolson7205 that's awesome thank you
Where did you order you new gears ?
Check out PartsTree.com. Not sure if they still have them, supply chain stuff, you know.
Don't ride the brake down the hills. Is it just for parking?
Just to stop the transmission from spinning to shift gears. Only time it is used.
@@daleolson7205 I see , to overcome the belt scrub ....Good idea ! No more gear grinding.
Been lookin for one of these for years
There have been some available on the Coot Facebook page recently.
@@daleolson7205 haven’t found any yet
you still got any of these parts laying around? might be interested in the blower motor and heater boxes.
Sorry, everything got sold in a package deal. I realized I would never do anything with these.
Do you have a video on taking off the time sleave
If it is not in the CZcams play list, then no.
Where do you order parts ?
We got most of our parts from partstree.com. Had to get a couple things used from eBay.
Where do you get your parts from ?
I went online and found Partstree.com,, used them for most of the stuff. A few had to be purchased used from eBay.
looks in pretty decent shape
Sold it to a collector that had a 440 of the same year, he was tickled that it was is such good shape.
Ok, I'ma stop here because you're not including us in the build. You are basically talking to yourself as you work but aren't showing any close-ups of parts or placement. I can talk myself through the process. I was hoping to see the procedure closer than 8 feet away.
Wondering who you sourced your parts with. I bought the seals for another horse I have torn down from MTD, and it cost fifty four dollars for four seals with shipping. That seems rediculous to me but it was the only place I could find at the time. Some people swear by OEM parts but damn.
Got most of the stuff through Partstree.com. A couple things had to be sourced used as they were not available new.
I love those tillers.... I have one torn down right now. Thanks for the video!
Can I ask what the cost was to refurbished your tiller sir?. I have one that is probably going to need about the same rebuild. New engine and all not sure about the transmission it's been sitting for a few years.
Total came to about $1,500 for all the parts. The on-line manuals that are available were invaluable, made the job a lot easier.
the engine was in addition to that, I was doing this for a friend and he supplied that.
Thanks for your reply by the way the tiller looks great. I'm sure it's going to give some one many more years of good service. Those older Troy's are built like tanks. Job well done sir enjoyed your video.
Brilliant
I just bought one of these tillers.I installed a new motor and filled with gear oil .It was working great then it stopped going forward I noticed gear oil coming out from the rear tine seal..I turned it off and ordered the seal.low gear oil wouldn't make it stop going forward right?? I hope the rear gear is ok.
Anything else I should check? Thank you I will be Installing the seal tomorrow.
I think you might have more serious problems than a seal if the tiller stopped moving. The main drive shaft has two worm gears on it, one drives the transmission hi and low speed to the axle with the tires, the other turns the tiller. If neither one is turning, check the drive belts. look online for a manual with a parts diagram, I think Partstree.com might be a source. It's not too complicated, but everything works together on this.
@@daleolson7205 I'm hoping it just popped out of gear..I have new belts and everything was working fine ..I am Installing a new seal tomorrow and I'm just hoping the previous owner didn't run it alot low on gear oil.. The fluid was coming out pretty good ..I I was tilling deep and I'm hoping the linkage got bumped or needs adjusted. Thanks for the reply.I will check the rear gear also to see what shape it's in..
@@daleolson7205 it was the belt slipping from tilling to deep in pretty moist conditions on that side of the garden..I replaced the seal it was real easy I ran a sheet metal screw into the seal then used a prybar to pull it out..Came out fast..Now I noticed the front pinion seal leaking so that's next. What a workhorse these things are compared to my front tine..Tilling is a easy job now..Take care
I was really hoping to see carb at least cleaned, gap on plug, and info on ordering parts.
Started and ran good, no need to mess with the carb. Parts are our there, the internet is our friend for that. Start at Partstree.com, go from there.
@@daleolson7205 Yes sir I agree, but the title of the video was a restoration... all you did was change out a 2 inch fuel line and add oil and gas..
you taped the spark plug check, why not include the gap and info about the plug?
Great information any chance you have 633a78 reverse gears and your sears parts web site or any leads would be greatly appreciated
Sorry, no parts. All my leads for sources came right from the web, doing Yahoo/Google searches. There are some other CZcamsrs that play with Sears garden tractors. I think "RooneySears" might be one.
how to pull the bearing? tutorial pls
I probably did it wrong! Because the transmission was disassembled I was able to punch it out with a hammer and punch from the inside. Not sure how to pull it out while assembled.
Hi Dale, I’m having trouble removing these roll pins, would you have any advise?
Make sure you have the right size punch, your favorite penetrating oils and as a last case resort heat and cool to break the bond to the pin.
Good job it looks great
Did you shim out the engine to make the pulleys line up or shim out the pulleys that attach to the crankshaft? I just installed a new engine on mine and the pulleys are off probably a 1/4" or more.
I shimmied out the pulley. Plenty of thread on the hold down bolt, no interference with the key way. It didn't need much, about an 1/8" to line it up on this one.
Should the points show continuity across them when they are open and closed? I am trying to set timing using multi meter and listen for the beep and see if marks are lined up but the wire from points to coil always has continuity when they are open and closed. Is that not correct?
Wow, that is a question I don't know the answer to. I sold the sled a couple years ago now and 2 stroke twins were never my strong point. I would suggest checking around and see if you have a local snowmobile club you might be able to hook up with. Those guys can be an invaluable resource.
@@daleolson7205 I went back out and was checking it out again and I think what it does it the ground jumps from one send of points to the other through the magneto. When I would only have one set of points closed it would allow continuity from ground to both wires from each set of points to the coil it was confusing me. I then made a light like most use to set the timing and it would only light the light on the side that had the closed points. I guess that's why they always use a battery and a little bulb and not just continuity beep to set timing.
Awesome shop, Sir! Obviously, you have lots of experience and mechanical knowledge. Only wish you were my neighbor,. - Some random internet guy. - North Central Florida - Welcome to the Age of Depopulation.
Not in North Central Florida !!! At least not near the WRINKLE RANCH ( villqges) 😅. Leesburg has grown exponentially to say the least. Hate this sand pit anymore
I’m getting one of these except it broke down and was engine swapped for a Polaris 340
It uses a "starter/generator" attached to the flywheel with a belt. It is mounted under where the gas tank is sitting.
My Engine doesn't have one and it's the same model number k241

Hey Dale ? I am working on on of these, is there a bushing that goes in between the back brass gear and the end bearing to keep the bearing an race from moving in too far? I can't find that bushing but I think mine is missing that bushing cause the bearing race goes in past the tiller housing
Check out the service manual here: www.custompartsinc.com/troy-bilt-tiller-documents/information-downloadable-as-adobe-pdf-documents.html
Need to do mine.
Having some problem with my Troy Built Horse. It don’t want to go into high gear. Suggestion??
The dogs on the sliding shaft collar that the shifter lever moves between low and high gear need to engage the gears on either side. Either the collar isn't going far enough, or there is significant damage to the collar or gear.
Any idea how much to fix?
@@larryl9927 Not without knowing what is wrong. Try setting the tiller up off the ground so you can rotate the tires and move the high/low lever at the same time. You might be able to feel what is going on a little better. Check out this, it might help: www.partstree.com/models/horse-i-troy-bilt-rear-tine-tiller-6hp-sn-001001-639999/transmission-assemblies-9/
I should have told you my tiller is a Troy Built House Model 8 HP B&S Engine w/Electric Start.
Looking Great!!
Hi Dale! I just bought a similar kit car. Thanks for the videos. I'm in St Paul, where are you located?
I live east of River Falls, still part of the TC Metro area. I plan on being at Back To The 50's on Friday, the 18th. FWIW, I recently found a forum group that is focused on the Classic Roadsters Sebring, some interesting stuff going on there. Search for "healeyreplicas.forumakers.com".
I have to apologize, some segments ended up out of order, not sure what happened but I will try to do better next time.
Where did you order parts from? I have 3 of these old "Horse" I'm going to try to repair. They've been in the family for many many years. "Gear issues"
PartsTree.com Like everything else these days the supply chain is not consistent. Parts may not always be available. We had to get one gear used from eBay.
You definitely need a lift table so that you can get the machine at eye level.
I don't do enough of this stuff to make it worth it. A couple saw horses with planks and the engine hoist get it done.
Good, how are youuu?
Nice video! You would like to see my homemade 1/5 49cc RC buggy!!
I had a hard time with the axle seals myself. Didn't want to damage shaft at sealing surface
I was looking at the shop manual and the axle bushings go in after the shaft and gears are in position to allow the key in the keyway through. Seals will be after that. Still waiting on parts right now.
@@daleolson7205 I just ordered a new axle shaft and the small low speed gear. mine was shot. I just tore it apart today and I'm glad I found your videos. Nice job on editing and filming. Not bad for just getting started.
Well Dale , I see why your seals were leaking. I found parts at Custom Parts Inc. Online
Nice Job Dale! Are you a retired mechanic? You def know what your doing.
Had some formal training out of High school (many years ago) but I was never fast enough to do it for a living. Just always been wrenching as a hobby all my life.
