Moss Garden in a Coffee Mug
A big coffee mug got a chip on the lip and instead of throwing it away, I turned it into a moss garden cup. After measuring the width of the cup I designed a holding tray for the moss in Fusion 360. Then I printed it out on my Prusa 3D printer. Stuck some thick thread from an old mop in it and then put in the moss. Woahla! A moss garden in a cup!

The caterpillars continue to chow down on the lemon tree leaves. This bunch right now go through about four to five big leaves a day. By the look of things, they're about ready to pupate.

An ant flew onto my desk the other night. In all likelihood it's a queen! I've always wanted to make another ant farm but one of the reasons I never got around to do it was the hassle of finding a queen ant. Now, one literally landed in front of me! The little glass vial of the starter tube was all black. Usually, that's an indicator it's burned out so I thought that was the problem.

Yeah, it was an oversight at the time. Maybe the next time I change it out I'll see if I can film that. 🙂

It is maybe resting after spinning silk not pupating.
It got brown when it just pupated there. My chrysalises never turned brown except for one: that is, pupated on the side of our chair and turned brown a few hours after pupation. It happened somewhere at the wee hours of September 7 or 8 I don't remember the date when it pupated
Thanks for sharing your experience! Most of my chrysalises turned brown, but I did have one turn green! I thought it might be because it formed on a green leaf. Later chrysalises that formed on other leaves, though, still turned brown, so not sure why that happened.
@@ermah We got 8 chrysalises that are green, and one brown. One of them is in pupa stage yet but it is an Atlas Moth and the due date is about Jan. 18 because it pupated somewhere at the mid December.
@@ermah I had one just still green even it is hanging in a brown object like cardboard... I have a chrysalis cage that is for caterpillars to pupate there. The last chrysalis just pupated at the bottom of the stick that butterflies will grasp them after they emerge. On the start of October, I got a fifth instar caterpillar that is dark greenish and looked like a Mormon Butterfly. It was eating a lot of leaves until someday, it stopped eating. It was resting all day and did not move until at night, it moved again. It just purged food! And it is leaving the container! I put a stick on it and put it on the chrysalis cage, and then found its pupation spot after 30 minutes of searching and finding. It pupated 2 days later and I did not see the pupation process because it is early morning it happened. After a few hours, I woke up and saw the newly formed chrysalis and the old skin hanging under the chrysalis, connected to the silk. @@ermah I got also one of my caterpillars molting from 4th to fifth instar but it struggled to remove the skin off of its body and while the cuticle hardens, I helped to remove its 4th instar skin off of its body and twitching: czcams.com/video/JQa40oq-gJQ/video.html
Sometime in September a caterpillar just pupated in an enclosed space (the spot where my other caterpillars still eating) and it just pupated perfectly but the caterpillar pupating had no space between the pupation spot but it got fine. The New chrysalis did not ooze out when still soft.
This is how comforters are pictured online.. what gets sent in reality is a pancake squished into a zippered bag.

How did you round the edges of the cardboard tubes that you attached to each side accurately? Yours are nice and flush with your hydrant. I'm not having much luck with that part.
Mainly through trial and error. I used an utility knife to gradually carve out the cardboard tube and kept test fitting it against the side of the bigger tube. Just go slow and steady and you'll end up with a nice fit. Cheers!
