Moved here 4 years ago and made some of the rookie mistakes. Two of my biggest mistakes....1. buying the Angus Barn hype. Enjoyed the Christmas decor...the food was average and way overpriced. 2. The Pit is one of the worst BBQ places I've had in the area. Sam Jones is good. Redneck BBQ Lab at McGee's Crossroads is really good. Prime BBQ in Knightdale and Dampf Good BBQ at Philips Farm in Cary are have some of the best BBQ I've had anywhere in the country. Lastly...good tip on avoiding Capital Blvd.

So true 😂. The far left lane on 40 and 540 are for people with ticket money. Don’t go to the fair at night. DON’T GO TO THE FAIR AT NIGHT! Avoid 440 in a nice car unless you love debris and rocks hitting your car oh and a lot of construction. I think they have NASCAR tryouts there too with all of the racing and speeding 😂.

This is a fun list of rookie mistakes, and I agree. As for Q, I completely agree with Ole Time Barbecue. It's legit! Cook-Out is also a legit option if you want a cheap Barbecue fix! Another mistake is not ordering the hamburger steak junior at Char Grill. Don't just order a hamburger. Go big and enjoy the fries that come with the hamburger steak junior. Another mistake when driving north and south through downtown is assuming that speeding helps in moving through the city center. The lights are timed on both Dawson (southbound) and McDowell (northbound). You are actually rewarded for doing the speed limit because the lights are timed to move you through the center safely when driving the posted speed. As for Howling Cow (my favorite), it's a rookie mistake if you think you have to go out to the dairy research center (while really cool) when you can just go to the Tally Student Center on campus and get it there.

I live in Fayetteville and I have been to Raleigh and Charlotte numerous times and I have always loved the vibe of Raleigh over Charlotte and that could be because I know I’m not a city person and me Raleigh is just big enough to where we have city amenities, but it’s still a great place to raise a family.... honestly I could drive through Apex Holly Springs Fuquay Varina, Cary all day and just love how it feels up there one day I would love to move up there, even though I admit I’m kind of nervous too because I hear people ain’t Cary are really snobby so maybe an Apex or Holly Springs where I still have small town living but a city is not far away but I love Raleigh and suburbs

I would say Charlotte is more of a cosmopolitan city and has more to do than Raleigh. Raleigh is much more smaller and slower than Charlotte. Raleigh seems super crowded and lacks infrastructure of a large city such as Charlotte. Charlotte is more organized than Raleigh. The people in Charlotte are more welcoming than in Raleigh. Raleigh has a long way to go. Raleigh is safer than Charlotte. DTR needs a lot of work where UTC is more of an organized. The culinary seen in Charlotte is unmatched compared to Raleigh. Raleigh to me is more comparable to Knoxville, TN than Charlotte. I used to work in Charlotte while living in Raleigh. The only reason I’m leaving Raleigh is because I’m building a house on the coast.

Charlotte is really not THAT crowded. Both are pretty slow, sprawling Southern cities. But overall, I guess it depends on what you value. If you’re a city person, Charlotte is a better choice. I imagine the type of people who would choose Raleigh would live in the burbs anywhere they go.

Lived in both, spot on with the traffic and crowds. Couldn’t go back to Charlotte even though there is a lot to like there too.

Charlotte is more of an actual city, Raleigh more of a big town. Raleigh more for families and Charlotte more for younger people but Charlotte has some suburbs great for families.

I have roots in both CA and NC and enjoy aspects of both. They are certainly different and the information you provided was very helpful for newbies, but there was one aspect of California cities that you did mistake. Each of the major cities in California ; Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego… They all have very distinctive neighborhoods that have their own vibe and feel. Los Angeles actually has one of the less popular downtown areas of the three cities. Los Angeles is very spread out with a ton of different neighborhoods that all offer something a little different but I don’t believe that’s much different than most cities in the United States that have built communities around similar cultures, values or appreciations. I am moving back to North Carolina and I’m very excited about less traffic four seasons and more quiet, but I will definitely be planning my quarterly trips back to San Diego.

It’s a plus that it feels more rural and lack of the “luxury” neighborhoods. Some people can’t stand the HOAs. They lack character and charm that the south is known for.
