Rion, you're absolutely right, the architecture industry needs to ditch the "not in it for the money" mindset. Deep negotiation skills are a must, and I love the idea of the 200 Club - we need more architects who are financially empowered!
#goals
The Mike & Paul show needs to be a thing 😆
A compelling case for architects to take control of their projects by becoming developers, offering a unique perspective on risk, profitability, and the value of a hands-on approach.
Great 👍🏻😊
This guy talks my language. "Just build a building." Not interested in all the politics and pain that go with the standard architectural process (+20yrs in the commercial sector) - I became an architect to get things built.
The legend
San Diego’s finest!
Wow what a garage! He has my attention
This time around the MBS are going be blown up by commercial real estate liar loans instead of residential liar loans (2008). Banks have sold their treasuries paying 3% due to the fact interest rates have been set to 5%. To compensate, many banks have sold their treasuries to buy COLs paying out 7%. COLs have a large amount exposure to commercial real estate. The amount of fraud being exposed in commercial real estate should be a huge blaring siren that we’re due for the next recession.
It's eye-opening to hear how deeply rooted the issue of architect salaries is, and how perceived value plays a huge role. Enoch's challenge to architects to own their value and stop competing on price is spot-on. I'm definitely going to rethink my approach to marketing and sales after hearing this!
Enoch's breakdown of business strategy is a must-listen for any architect looking to build a thriving practice. His focus on long-term vision and taking action on the important (not just the urgent) is gold for any entrepreneur.
Underbidding works IF the practice is, or can, keep growing. I used to work for such a practice until the UK financial collapse in 2007/8. The inability to cover costs became exposed and they had to reduce staff numbers to survive and on the 'last in first out' basis guess who lost out! The UK needs to extend the requirement under the Building Safety Act for 'competency" to mean appropriately qualified and registered/chartered for which a requirement is competence and those not meeting the 'competence' standard can be removed from the register/professional body etc. Cutting the scope of work and closely limiting the content of the service offered (lower headline cost) and offering loads of optional 'extras' so that clients can comprehend that what we do is costly. I've tried showing them that the value added over and above a non-architect is more than the cost of using an architect such that using an architect is ;less than free. However it seems that is so far beyond what they expect they just assume I'm not telling the truth, even when it has been demonstrated!
Dan D'Agostino's approach to building a luxury architecture brand is refreshingly honest and practical. He emphasizes the importance of a strong business foundation, efficient workflow, and understanding the unique needs and desires of high-net-worth clients. It's clear that he's not just designing homes, but crafting a luxury experience for his clients.
If you want to succeed, don't hang around architects. these guys will die poor and unfulfilled.
A pleasure to be on, Rion! Looking forward to more creative applications of this new tech by the design community!
Fear it because it's going to make architects worse and your clients cheaper
Age old question: How to value good design?
Well said - another excellent discussion. Thank you for your content!
10:26 This is very well articulated, and unfortunately very common. One way to help justify this service to clients on the front end is to be a better story teller, with visual examples, of cases you have experienced on site that have either saved money, time, or project details that would have been otherwise missed or overlooked by the contractor.
practice management 1001 yes. Thanks.
Keep going! It would be great to have more international and younger architects on the pod.
Thanks for the insight...
very insightful and breaks a lot of grounds. Is there a second part to the video? First part ended abruptly and was looking forward to the remainder of the interview.
The English flag is not racist of course, but only an unfortunate interpretation of it that is promoted by a nasty minority. Great Britain is the largest island in the UK and only contains most of England, Scotland and Wales.
such good insight's into the reality of the business of architecture
Amazing content!! Keep it up

Would love to discuss the actual implications of AI on the architectural profession with you.
This is interesting because as a hardcore AIA advocate being president of my local chapter in Florida I found this agreeable but also comical. I don’t pay $700 a year to rely on the AIA to help me with my business. I do it so that I have a platform to network and collaborate with other industry professionals, universities, and have fun with my peers. As I’ve been a member for 10 years now I’ve learned that the AIA actually has a lot of benefits that I hadn’t and still don’t take full advantage of. These include but aren’t limited to insurance, construction administration advice, contract documents, practice guidance, and legislation. I plan to maintain my membership because it’s a cheap investment to at the bare minimum carry the AIA acronym after my name, which carries a lot of weight and respect in the construction marketplace. When it comes to leadership, finance, business, and marketing education I absolutely invest in these so that I can constantly improve my single member LLC’s profitability so that I can be economically independent. Cheers, Rion!
Much love BOA. A fan from NIGERIA💚
Johnson was born as rich as Crassus.
Fantastic interview! Great job. “The riches are in the niches.”
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for this video. It's super helpful!
You're so welcome!
This was is a brilliant interview
Glad you liked it!
Thank you, Dan, for sharing the great information, your knowledge and experience!
My pleasure!
Could short term for example be focusing on Design alone with long term thinking about moving into construction? Thanks again Enoch.
Yes, absolutely
thank u for this insparational interview. You are both very interesting speakers
Thank you
Thanks for listening
Sage advice.
Thanks for another great episode. I was wondering.... There are so many practices around the world. Most are delivering design services to solve a client's problem or need. I'd like to know what examples are there of firms that innovative in their business structures. I don't mean innovative design solutions. Perhaps innovation with their client acquisition, or offer package. Thanks again, Enoch.
Good question!
Check out the recent episode we did on business structures.

Amazing interview and inspiring for those of us looking to switch from architecture to real estate. Thank you for the great dialog and motivating discussion. I appreciate the humble open discussion of fears and obstacles.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Ain'mt that a fact - the only discomfort you experience is all related to your attitude.
Well said.
Great content, super interesting behind the scenes perspective. Thank you and keep it up!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent talk and 100% agree that architectural education does not cover enough hard business skills. Your laser focus on this is hugely appreciated. Congratulations

What were the guerilla tactics? This wasn't very useful and a waste of 20 minutes.
Hi thanks for your comment, sorry you didn’t find this useful - it was recorded at the RIBA event named Guerilla Tactics hence the title. If you want to learn more about the tactics and strategies deployed for small practices do look around the channel there’s plenty here.
Fantastic video Rion! Thank you so much for uploading this one. I think it’s equally as important for students to begin learning about the business side of the profession and I hope to start creating content on this. Let me know if you’d be up for a collaboration to expand the opportunity to reach out to as many architecture students across the world to educate them on this🤞🏽💫
Very good
Thanks!
