Group Dynamics Overview
zhlédnutí 4,9KPřed 9 lety
Welcome to screencasts pertaining to Groups and their dynamics, to accompany the text Group Dynamics by Don Forsyth. Group dynamics are the influential actions, processes, and changes that occur within and between groups. Groups come in all shapes and sizes and their functions are many and varied, but their influence is universal. The tendency to join with others in groups is perhaps the single...
Group Dynamics 14a Intergroup Conflict's Causes
zhlédnutí 7KPřed 10 lety
As a social species, humans strive to establish close ties with one another. Yet the same species that seeks out connections with others also metes out enmity when it confronts members of another group. Intergroup relations are more often contentious than harmonious.
Group Dynamics 14c Improving Intergroup Relations
zhlédnutí 5KPřed 10 lety
Conflict between groups is one of the most complicated phenomena studied by social scientists, but the goal of greater understanding and the promise of reduced tension remain enticing. Schools, communities, businesses, and even nations, to deal with the problems that intergroup conflicts can create, have sought ways to help members recognize the sources of their disputes, and learn to managed t...
Group Dynamics 14b Intergroup Biases
zhlédnutí 2,6KPřed 10 lety
In his classic treatise The Nature of Prejudice, Allport (1954) wrote that "conflict is like a note on an organ. It sets all prejudices that are attuned to it into simultaneous vibration. The listener can scarcely distinguish the pure note from the surrounding jangle" (p. 996). This brief presentation examines some of the psychological "jangle" that contributes to conflict between groups.
Group Dynamics 13b Conflict Escalation and De-escalation
zhlédnutí 5KPřed 10 lety
Conflict in groups generally become more intense before it abates, with such factors as misperceptions, negative emotions, and the use of harsh influence tactics contributing to escalation, and opposing, and more positive, processes such as forgiveness and empathy contributing to the reduction of conflict.
Group Dynamics 13a Conflict's Causes
zhlédnutí 6KPřed 10 lety
Conflict is common in groups, and this presentation traces group disagreement, discord, and friction back to five root causes: competition, selfishness, dominance, procedural/content differences, and personal tastes.
Group Dynamics 11a Decision Making
zhlédnutí 7KPřed 10 lety
People often turn to groups when the decisions they must make are important ones, and groups can in some situations work so well that they make decisions that are far superior to those made by individuals. The key, however, to reaching a positive outcome is maximize facilitating discussion processes, and avoiding the pitfalls that can undermine the quality of a group's discussion.
Group Dynamics 11b Decision Making Polarization and Groupthink
zhlédnutí 6KPřed 10 lety
This brief presentation describes two group processes that can cause groups to make decisions that are suboptimal: polarization and groupthink.
Group Dynamics 12b Teams Composition and Process
zhlédnutí 2,3KPřed 10 lety
The effectiveness of a team depends, fundamentally, on the skills, traits, competencies of the members, and the processes and procedures that determine how team members combine their talents and resources to generate a team product.
Group Dynamics 12a Teams Types
zhlédnutí 3,6KPřed 10 lety
An introduction to teams, the presentation examines several definitions of teams, various types of teams, and the input-process-output model of team processing.
Group Dynamics 12c Teams Training
zhlédnutí 1,5KPřed 10 lety
Researchers have identified a number of steps that can be taken to improve team functioning, including transforming groups into teams, training members in the skills needed to work in teams, and providing organization support for teams.

Group Dynamics 9b Leadership Emergence
zhlédnutí 4,4KPřed 10 lety
Who will emerge as the leader of a group, of an organization, or a nation. Emergence depends, in part, on the qualities of the individual such as personality, competencies, and experiences but also the nature of the situation. This brief presentation reviews a number of theoretical analyses of leadership emergence.
Group Dynamics 10a Performance Social Facilitation
zhlédnutí 4,6KPřed 10 lety
Most of the billions of groups in the world exist to get a particular job done. People use groups to discuss problems, concoct plans, forge products, and make decisions. When a task would overwhelm a single person's time, energy, and resources, individuals turn to groups. Even when tasks can be accomplished by people working alone (such as studying group dynamics), people often prefer to work i...
Group Dynamics 10c Performance Social Combination
zhlédnutí 2,7KPřed 10 lety
How well do groups perform on more complex tasks that require coordination and collaboration? Companies and businesses must monitor, regulate, and organize the activities of hundreds of employees-should they organize their workers into teams? When quality matters, will a single, dedicated craftsperson build a more beautiful product than a work crew that must plan each action as raw construction...

Its Mark Leary's paper in the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology, where he talks of the inclusion-exclusion continuum: the citation is Leary, M. R. (1990). Responses to social exclusion: Social anxiety, jealousy, loneliness, depression, and low self-esteem. Journal of Social & Clinical Psychology, 9, 221-229. He has a more recent overview (that is more accessible) in the Annual Review: Leary, M. R. (2007). Motivational and emotional aspects of the self. Annual Review of Psychology, 58, 317-344.
