Can Cobra One Length Irons Help a Mid Handicap Golfer
Hi All, this week I am going from one end of the spectrum to the other and trying out Cobra One Length Irons a week after trying the Taylormade P7MB irons in my last video. I love the theory behind these clubs but can they help a mid handicap golfer shoot better scores. thanks :-)

Should a mid handicap golfer attack or defend to shoot lower scores?

    When switching to single-length irons, forget the various distances your conventional irons give you. Start fresh. Copy down the corresponding distances of your new irons. Of course, the respective distances will be different from your old clubs. Accept it and forget it. With single-length irons, you'll essentially be playing the same club for every swing. The distances will be longer or shorter depending on the club you're holding. Your position at address stays the same for every iron. Why is there such a controversial argument about single-length irons? Among golfers whose thinking isn't constipated, there isn't an argument. Trying something different takes patience, time, intelligence, and an open mind. If these fundamental elements are missing, you'll never improve your understanding of diversity. Single-length irons make more sense than a conventional set of irons because they eliminate the need to adjust your relative position at address for each club. If you're comfortable with the pitching wedge in a set of single-length irons, you can now swing all of your irons like they are a pitching wedge.

    I think there’s a huge misconception between handicap and irons. They certainly play a part in what you should play, but your handicap should never determine what irons you can play. I’ll take myself for example, my first irons were butter knifes, thinner than pretty much any iron out there today, and I played them for years. My handicap is less about my iron striking and more about my inconsistency with driver and wedge game. Also turf interaction is a huge part in determine an iron. Some players need thinner soles or atleast a dole with a hood bit a trailing edge relief. Sure blades can hurt you on your misses and that’s likely what would hurt a higher handicap. But for someone that strikes their irons consistently, they can easily game a split set of blades and maybe 770 or 790

    I have multiple sets of high end Japanese irons. Love them all even though each set is different in specs from each other. The last set I was using a lot was my Honma TWX hollow irons. Great clubs. Bought the Cobra LTDx one length on a whim last summer. Took awhile to get used to them. Went through some of the same issues you did. Kept putting my Honma’s back in the bag and would go back and forth a bit. However something clicked one day with the OL’s. Now I’m shooting my best scores and most consistent golf of my life. Total confidence in these Cobra’s now! I pulled the ball in closer and have more of a single plane swing with upright body position ala Bryson. I’m hitting with more compression than I ever have and hitting absolute bombs. May get the Forged Tec versions of the OL’s just because I’d prefer less offset and a more lofted iron to gain a bit more spin around the greens. Overall I can’t go back to standard irons now. Just love these. I’m a 8 handicap and have shot multiple round just under par with these.

    I’d say that you could play those. You hit them really well. I have a few sets of blades I play from time to time because I love the look and feel. I usually get around the course pretty well. There are some days when I’m playing with my regular cavity backs and think thank god I’m not playing with the blades today. That said, I feel like having the blades forces me to rise to the occasion, focus and hit it better. They don’t make me play better, but probably about the same. I realistically lose most strokes on putting anyhow…I often think: should I play blades? Probably not. Can I? Sure, why not? I’m not going on tour.

    I switched regular clubs for the One length F9 in 2019 and I can say this was the best investment that I have made in golf clubs. My confidence went up 100%. Went from a 20 to a 14 handicap and has been as low as 11.6. Just got the dark speed one lenght sand wedge because the shaft on my F9 was cracked. Love it. It does go a little further but the same nice high shot from 110yds and in. I am getting a new shaft on my F9 as it is now my sw wedge around the green. I hope they are working out for you as well as they are working for me.

    I still play Nike pro combo 8,9,p all bladed I agree about chipping the flat narrow soles are ideal for little bump and runs. The ability to flight them higher or lower and all the common things that get said such as workability are true. I’ve tried various different types of blades over the years and when you’re swinging well and finding the middle of the face there isn’t a better feeling but now to the big negative. Off center strikes get punished massively can have 15 yards fall off in distance easily with an 8 iron that’s sometimes enough to find the trap or miss the green. At the end of the day if someone has their heart set on a set of blades go buy them don’t let anyone tell you they’re not for you. My golf is nothing special I’ve played off 5-6 for quite a long time ball striking is my strength though those irons have been in my bag for 14 years I think in that time I’d say iron play is my strength. I will be changing in the near future to something with a lighter and possibly slightly softer shaft and may just choose a different design of iron but I am 42 and don’t play as often as I once did not because I don’t love a blade. The lofts are generally standard so technically you’re probably not actually losing distance.

    i have a 2022 set *9 handicap and they felt a bit odd at first 4i-6i (rest felt totally fine, i even bought the 56 & 60). Your brain will fight you once you get above a 7 iron (you look like you are standing much too far from the ball like you'd be doing it with an actual 4 iron) and also trying to hit it harder etc.. i feel you, i had a few really rough sessions with them but i did get used to them. I still go back to my standard length here & there (Mizuno JPX tour/forged split set 919). But i dropped a bomb on the fitted set of one-lengths so giving them their chance!

    As a high handicapper i used these for a few months as i thought they would be good for me but it wasn't the case. I found that the longer irons like the 5 iron i was losing distance and when it came to the wedges, it was hard to keep the shots short and just kept over hitting them. So they didn't work out for me unfortunately. - Gavin

    I really enjoyed the video, and your attitude regarding the way you look at the game and equipment. I share your view and enjoy playing clubs that would not be anywhere near being recommended for my skill level. I may shoot in the low 80's but, what keeps bringing me back is the 8 or 10 shots that are hit flush with the clubs I enjoy using. Stay with them and enjoy the process no matter what anyone has to say !

  • @aevans1979
    @aevans1979 Před 3 měsíci

    One length irons (low lofted especially) play much more upright than standard irons. This will explain the irons going left a bit. You will also swing the 4i harder than the PW because your brain wants the ball to go 4i distance which usually makes the ball go further left. The benefit of OL is hitting the center of the club face more often which should lead to fewer mishits and improved consistency. Takes a while to get used to playing everything the same. Keep at it for a couple more weeks and don’t switch between your standard length clubs and OL. See if that helps.

    Spot on analysis, I have a set of 2022 OL. I absolutely love the longer 8-PW. They allow for a very smooth and controlled swing. On the other hand, the shorter 5 & 6, are extremely hard to make consistent contact. As a result most of those shots go low and/or left. Gapping gets tight towards the top of the bag too I'm working it out, and they are getting better. Very odd that the theory and premise around OL irons were that the long irons would be easier to hit and short irons would have less control, yet I have found the complete opposite to be true. For the time being I have a Variable Length 4i on the bag and have been contemplating going variable length 5 & 6 to mesh up with my OL 7-PW.

In terms of struggling more with the "long" irons id say what definitely helped with one lengths is ball position and playing them in a similar way to what i would a standard 7 iron as thats what the shafts are set to on them...was hard to tell on ball position with some of the camera angles but fantastic content keep it up 👍

The issue is always on those three or four inevitable bad strikes that I get during a round when hitting the irons. That is why muscle backs just aren’t right for me. Everybody should play blades, they're not that different to GI clubs and the pleasure you get from having them in the bag more than offsets any slight loss of forgiveness. Loss if distance is a mind-set, it doesn't matter what number is written on the bottom, it's knowing how far that club will go. In my ideal world a 3 iron should be 24° and everything else in 4° steps down to a 52° PW and 56° SW. I choose all my iron sets primarily on their looks, yes, I'm a shallow individual. But if you go back in time there are hundreds of stunning sets of irons to find.
