Louis Spohr: Symphony No.1 Op.20, NDR Radiophilharmonie, Howard Griffiths (conductor)
Louis Spohr - Symphony No.1 Op. 20, in E Flat Major, NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover, Howard Griffiths (conductor)
I. Adagio - Allegro - 00:00
II. Larghetto con moto - 11:52
III. Scherzo: Allegro - 16:33
IV. Finale: Allegretto - 24:05
Louis Spohr (5 April 1784 - 22 October 1859), baptized Ludewig Spohr (his family called him by the name of Luis), later often in the modern German form of the name Ludwig, was a German composer, violinist and conductor.
Spohr received his first violin from his father in 1789, and - with no instruction at first - he attempted to play the melodies he heard. Eventually, he began taking his first lessons with Johann Andreas Riemenschneider, the principal of the school in Seseen, and Spohr soon began to take part in evening musical activities with the Spohr.
When he came of age, Spohr went to Brunswick, where he took violin lessons with Kammermusicus Gottfried Kunisch (1764- 1808). He also studied music theory with the organist Karl Augustus Hartung (1733-1800) - the only formal theory training Spohr ever received.
In 1805, Spohr obtained a position as concertmaster at the court of Gotha, where he stayed until 1812. Spohr later worked as conductor at the Theater an der Wien (1813-1815), where he was on friendly terms with Beethoven; subsequently he was opera director at Frankfurt (1817-1819). Spohr's longest period of employment, from 1822 until his death in Kassel, was as the director of music at the recently succeeded William II, Elector of Hesse's court of Kassel, a position offered him on the suggestion of Carl Maria von Weber.
In 1857 he was pensioned off, much against his own wish, and in the winter of the same year he broke his arm, an accident which put an end to his violin playing.
“As a composer, Spohr produced more than 150 works with opus numbers, in addition to a number of nearly 140 works without such numbers. He wrote music in all genres. His nine symphonies (a tenth was completed, but withdrawn). Between 1803 and 1844 Spohr wrote more violin concertos than any other composer of the time, eighteen in all, including works left unpublished at his death. There are two double-violin concertos, four clarinet concertos, 36 string quartets, as well as four double quartets for two string quartets. He also wrote an assortment of other quartets, duos, trios, quintets and sextets, an octet and a nonet, works for solo violin and for solo harp, and works for violin and harp.
Between 1820 and 1835, Spohr’s works were viewed by many as perfect representations of modern art. Widely admired and famous during his lifetime, Spohr’s works were ranked among the masterpieces of Bach, Mozart, Weber, Haydn, and Beethoven. In most of his compositions, Spohr followed the traditional ‘rules,’ of harmony, although occasionally he would ‘break’ them in order to achieve musical expression. “Also characteristic of his music is its thorough craftsmanship” (Weyer 1980). His music contained the qualities of sensitivity and sorrow, as well as “an aversion to popular effects” (ibid.). His emotional compositions could bring the listener into a state of great ecstasy or stimulate tears (Ciliberti 2001).” (by Stephanie Lynnette Vogler San Marcos, Texas)
“Spohr attempted his first symphony in 1811 at the suggestion of Georg Friedrich Bischoff (Symphony No. 1 in E flat major, Op. 20), and as Clive Brown and others have noted (including the present liner-note writer, Bert Hagels) the composer used Mozart's Symphony No. 39 in E flat major, K543, as something of a model. The general outlines of Spohr's movements, such as their time signatures and sentiments, can be traced to Mozart's 1788 work. Yet far from being a slavish imitator, Spohr in fact infuses Mozartean forms and themes with his own formidable contrapuntal and thematic designs, a procedure characterized by the late Charles Rosen as 'classicizing'; such works were 'based on the exterior models, the results of the classical impulse, and not upon the impulse itself'” (from an article published online by Cambridge University Press)

Some confusion surrounds this Concerto in A major, which Hummel seems to have reworked several times during his lifetime.
