    Oh yeah the 500ASA film looks really... granulated. Rough emulsion is so critical even for filming as it already was for photography but their negatives are much larger so it does not matter that strong there (only with the former pocket 110 format is also was a problem again). The 50ASA instead are fine and highresoluting coatings, therefor daylight was their preference. Like the former K40 used to be as well.

    Have you shot on Ektachrome 160 and Kodakchrome 40 and have any results from these film stocks? I put an ND 4 and ND 8 on my super 8 and am worried it will come out underexposed, but my lens goes to 1.2 aperture. On Auto exposure mode shooting with ND do you think that the camera will adjust to using and filter to give a better image so it doesn’t go to a higher aperture?

    • @CollinJacksonfilm
      @CollinJacksonfilm Před rokem

      I really wish that I had been able to shoot them! Unfortunately, Kodachrome 40 and Ektachrome 160 are both long-discontinued film stocks that are not compatible with the modern E6 color reversal developing process, meaning you can no longer process them the way initially intended. For most intents and purposes, they are dead film stocks. Some people have had success developing them as black-and-white negatives, although note that this is a very experimental, very temperamental process that is not guaranteed to work and can give wild, unexpected results when you are able to get results at all. Some labs do this processing, but expect to pay much more than for new film. You can also try developing it yourself if you're adventurous. If you're interested in very experimental filming and are willing to accept the very high risk that they won't turn out, you can find old Ektachrome 160D and Kodachrome for pretty cheap, but it's not necessarily something I can comfortably recommend in 2022. (I should note that I have heard of one case of a *very* experimental process that resulted in Kodachrome being developed in color within the past year, but this is very recent and even more risky and experimental). As for the ND filters and the light meter, it will depend on your camera. If your camera uses the light coming through the main lens to meter, than it should automatically adjust to having the ND filter on. On some other cameras though, there is a separate "eye" that the light meter uses on the front for the auto metering, and these will have no way of knowing if you put on a filter and will be unaffected by it. So basically, it'll just come down to the camera you have. If you have a camera with an option for manual exposure, I might suggest that when using your filter if you are comfortable doing so. Hope that helps!!

    I have a question, do the cartridges matter if the super 8mm camera is sound or no sound? I was told that you have to get film cartridges that are designed for the sound cameras and cartridges with no sound have different film cartridges as well.

    • @CollinJacksonfilm
      @CollinJacksonfilm Před rokem

      Great question! Basically, only silent (no sound) cartridges are still made and processed in the present day, but these silent cartridges can be used in either silent or sound Super 8 cameras. So no matter if you get a regular or sound Super 8 camera, you can still shoot new, modern Super 8 film! While you can still find old sound cartridges (that only fit in sound cameras), these will be long expired (1990s or earlier), and the sound strip can no longer be processed by most places and they may charge you more to process the film if they can do so at all, and you'll lose the sound anyways. So, TL;DR, you can use silent film cartridges in both silent and sound cameras, and sound cartridges don't exist anymore. Hope that helps!

      This was essentially a short end of a 400' roll from a project I had shot and I needed to "waste" the film before I sent it to the lab, so I just walked around campus and shot the rest of the film, so I didn't bother with any filters or anything. It also isn't the greatest color correction (I can't even remember how much I tried color-correcting with this short end), but I've since done a better color grade in Resolve, although I just realized I haven't uploaded it to CZcams with the re-color. I might re-upload the better version!

Unfortunately in 2022, prices have risen a little bit. For the Vision3 film stocks and Tri-X, the price is now US $31.99; for Ektachrome, the price is now US $42.99. Of course, this is just for the film (so not development or scanning), and are the prices from Kodak directly in the United States - other retailers can charge more for the same film. Silly question but as for a 16mm camera would you recommend a Cp-16 or a Bolex REX 3, 4, or 5?

    • @CollinJacksonfilm
      @CollinJacksonfilm Před rokem

      Not a silly question at all! I'd say it depends. What do you plan to use your 16mm camera for? For example, if you plan to make narrative films with dialogue recorded on-set, I'd definitely go with the CP-16 since it will natively be able to support longer film rolls, crystal-sync motors that can maintain sound-sync speeds, and quiet operation right out of the box - these are things that the Bolex cameras will need add-ons to accomplish, if they support them at all. The REX 5 is the only one of those that can take 400ft rolls, and requires a magazine that doesn't come standard with he camera. The Bolex cameras also will be loud enough to interfere with location sound recording, and only the REX 4 and REX 5 are compatible with crystal-sync motors that are necessary to be able to properly sync on-location sound (especially dialogue) with the footage. This crystal sync motor for the REX 4 and 5 is a separate add-on that is also somewhat more rare and will greatly add to the cost. Realistically, these Bolex models will not be all that cheaper than a CP-16 (and may cost more with the add-ons), so if you're looking to shoot any kind of narrative or documentary film with dialogue, I'd get a CP-16 or similar camera. That being said, if you are looking for a camera to just shoot smaller projects, like short films without location dialogue, music videos, home movies, travel films, etc - these are times when the smaller size, more portable nature, and more user-friendly operation of the Bolex models will definitely come in handy. I would personally recommend going with a Bolex model like the REX 3 or REX 1/2 or possibly an even earlier model (even a non-reflex one) since the REX 4 and REX 5 are going to be, imo, overpriced, and you won't be really missing the small number of added features they provided. Most Bolex models made between 1953 and 1963 will honestly be pretty good, since they'll shoot modern single-perf film. If you are in the market for a Bolex though, I'd also recommending looking at cheaper options like the Krasnagorsk-3 (also called the K3) since they will give the same functionality for cheaper. Ultimately, it'll come down to what your shooting needs are and your budget. Hope that helps!

    • @oldradios09
      @oldradios09 Před rokem

      @@CollinJacksonfilm what about the Canon Scoopic? Are the Cp-16 the size of 80s and 90s camcorders? If so I’ll stick with the Bolex. I already have a non-rex one and a couple B&H filmos and I want to upgrade to something really nice. Something I don’t have to guesstimate the focus of the lenses and has a fade/wipe thing for the shutter. I’m still very new to this. I admit I’m a bit of a collector of this stuff but I take time to actually use them too.

    • @CollinJacksonfilm
      @CollinJacksonfilm Před rokem

      @@oldradios09 The Canon Scoopic is a pretty awesome camera. I'd say that it's basically a cross between a Bolex and a Super 8 camera. Like the Bolex, it takes 100ft rolls of 16mm film that you have to thread up, but it has automatic exposure and an electronic motor and runs on a battery, which means you can shoot for longer since you don't have a spring-wound motor. The motor still won't be precise enough to shoot sync-sound however, and it can't take 400ft rolls, so it definitely is more of a competitor to a Bolex than to something like a CP-16. The only real downside it has in comparison to a Bolex is that it has a non-replaceable lens. They are pretty good lenses, and they are reflex, but you're stuck with what the one that comes with it. (On the plus side though, you don't have to pay extra for a lens, which saves you some money). In terms of the size of the CP-16, it's relatively similar in size to an early-1980s camcorder in that you have brace it on your shoulder, although almost definitely heavier than your average 80s camcorder. Pretty much any more "professional" 16mm camera that can take 400ft rolls, has crystal-sync, and is self-blimped is going to be much more unwieldy than something like a Bolex, so if you're going for a much more lightweight type of camera I'd definitely stay with a Bolex or K3 or Scoopic. I think really, it just comes down to if you plan to shoot films that need the crystal-sync or not. If you don't, then I'd definitely recommend against something like a CP-16 or an Arri SR or Aaton or Eclair since they are going to be more difficult to use, more expensive, and less lightweight and probably overkill. If you do need to shoot longer projects though like narrative films with location dialogue, then you pretty much will need something like a CP-16 since a Bolex or Scoopic won't cut it. I think if you're collecting them, a Bolex is probably more "collectable" also than something like a CP-16 since my CP-16 takes up a LOT of space, is very difficult to transport, and requires a lot more maintenance. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love mine; but on the same hand, if you don't think you need something like a CP-16, then it's probably not worth it. Sorry my answers ended up being so long-winded, but hopefully some of that will help you with your decision! EDIT: I should also probably add that the CP-16 might be the most difficult 16mm camera to thread. Much harder than not only a Bolex, but even cameras like Arris or Aatons. Eventually you do get the hang of it, but the first couple times are stressful. Also, if you plan to shoot 400ft rolls, you will have to get used to loading the magazine in complete darkness. Again, you do get used to it relatively quickly, but it is going to be something that is more stressful at first. If you're shooting 100ft rolls in the CP-16, you don't have to worry about loading in darkness, but the threading will be just as difficult.

    Let's see if I understand, there are 2 types of tapes, one negative and the other like this in positive development?

    I went through a similar situation recently with long lists and waiting and stuff, especially the ''there's other people who might need more help than you'' BUT I am slowly receiving the help I asked for. Nice short film!! I find the music so funny!!

      I'm really sorry you had to go through situations like that, I unfortunately know that pain well, but I'm also really glad you're finally starting to receive the help you need :) I hope you continue to get all the help you need and can get to a place where you're living your best life. I'm really glad you enjoyed the film, thanks so much for your kind words!
