Song of Myself - Trailer
Hey guys! This is a deviation from what I normally post here (and I will get another essay out, I promise), but I wanted to share with y'all the trailer for the (debut!) feature film I made with my friend Eli.
The movie is called "Song of Myself" and it's about Charlie, a listless college student, who comes out to various people in his life over the course of a single intoxicating night. We shot last summer in New York City and have been hard at work editing since. It's a very personal story for both Eli and I and I'm super excited about it all.
We're done fundraising but if you dig the trailer please follow @songofmyself_film on Instagram to keep updated, and share it around if you're so inclined.

    For me my sympathy for Walt was gone when he poisoned the kid. Before he did kill or let kill criminal adults. People who would ve killed him or people close to him. So thats justified. Gale and the people who indirectly died through Walts actions like in the plane crash already were hard tests. But Gale still was another criminal, producing an awful drug. The plane crash was too inderect. In the end it was still the decision of Janes dad who thought he is fit for work even tho he wasnt at all. Anyways. Putting a childs life in danger with poisoning is the red line. Walt isnt supposed to be the hero of the show anyways. Thats Hank.

    I would also like to add to the discussion of the 'face mask' scene (tw for the discussion of misogyny and rape ahead): In the scene where Walt rapes Skyler, I find the scene to be almost eerily loaded with associations of hyperfeminity. If Walt conforms to the masculine trait of being the provider, Sklyer is the homemaker - often associated with "belonging in the kitchen", both seen as nurturing and mocking depending on the tones of discussion. Skyler also continously displays small acts of selfcare, such as applying lotion or brushing her hair in front of a mirror. When Skyler is shown in this scene as in her morning robe and having just catered to a morning ritual of selfcare elements, ending with a facemask, she arguably displays a high level of feminity that contrasts Walt, even more so in this scene (which is highlighted by the fact that at the time the show aired, selfcare such as a simple act of applying lotion was seen as something exclusively feminine, or even more so, vain). Playing into elements of toxic masculinity, it becomes even easier for viewers that agree with Walt to condemn Skyler. Her feminity becomes vanity, and her refusal to engage with Walt consensually in this scene where he feels almost drunk/high on power and ego, becomes a scene of hyperfeminity rejecting masculity, not just toxic masculinity to the people who already strongly dislike Skyler due to (internalised) misogyny. Instead of being seen as the victim of domestic abuse and rape she is in this scene, to a view distorted by toxic masculinity she once again becomes a symbol of feminity and womanhood, emasculating a man for denying him what he wants. Bascially, she is over and over condemned throughout the show for *not* putting Walt's wants over her own needs, as a mother, a wife, even just a person. And especially with the aspects of frat culture you touched upon, this is incredibly chilling and awful to think about. edit: spelling

    I think this is a good analysis. Personally, i dont read it as necessarily specifically toxic masculinity, but simply walter's deep destructive, greedy and prideful tendencies independent of any societal expectations of men. In short, I think Walter is using the societal toxic standard as a (inauthentic) justification to live out his power fantasies, but he would have done so even if he had no family to support, that is he is not necessarily driven or influenced in his actions by toxic expectations about masculinity, just using them to justify independently bad tendencies. I don't think the story neccessarily has to be read as walter and his environment suffering from him uncritically accepting certain gendered expectations, but could just as well be read as Walter indepently from these gendered expectations being fucked up in the head and using them to give himself an excuse to act on his deep character flaws.

Wanting to be the leader, and in charge, can have no negative effect on those under you and the people you had to put down to get in charge? Being brave and fearless can have no negative consequences on the health of you and those around you? Being tenacious and stubborn always plays out right? Wanting to provide for your family can not have any bad effects on you, your family, and society? Every trait can manifest itself in toxic ways, to yourself, and or others. That is toxic masculinity.

  • @EphReinhard
    @EphReinhard Před 25 dny

    I believe the reason you and your video is so disliked is the following: A discourse of the perils of masculinity and how one may wish to achieve it anyway possible rather than in an honorable way, meaning that for example being tough doesn´t mean one has to become a criminal - is one thing, but anything aproached through neo-marxism is what these people are refutting, including your polarized view that the ballad of walter white is to be summarized as a mere warning on ¨Toxic Masculinity¨ - your terminology alone being offensive to non neo-marxist academians, why? because anything in neo-marxism seems to have one goal only, to reinforce itself and its terminology and to only admit discourse with its own terminology and its own goals. In other words, most people do not believe your video can reach the level of honesty in its analysis than lets say, a less neo-marxist inclined person would be capable of achieving. Also, one of the biggest ironies is that you support Skylers infidelities, just as they were calling you an obvious cuck(?) which you seem to have had no idea why that would ever apply to you. Personally I do not think you are that biased, are you a bit of a feminist, yes, and I mean it in the academic sense, but you arent that high on the spectrum of feminist bias and extremism beyond your now natural commitment to its terminology. I also do not think your video is "wrong" per se.
