How to germinate Giant Sequoia video: czcams.com/video/GPRoneHtUHE/video.html\ I was lucky enough to stumble across a young giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) and collect the seeds from the cones for germination this upcoming spring. I collected dried cones and green cones. Some of the green cones I stored to let them dry naturally, and some I heated to release the seeds. I am interested ...

    Hi from Northern California. Thank You to share this valuable germination process. I am interested in planting several hundreds of Giant sequoias in our 67 acres property in Miranda on the heart of the Avenue of the Giants. Would You be interested in selling some of the seedlings and help me going with the project?

      Hello there! I would have loved to GIVE you a bunch of seedlings. However, I’ve planted all my remaining older seedlings this spring at a friends property (have a video coming out soon about it actually). I only have about 2 dozen sequoias remaining from this season that I have no plans for. The customs cost to get the sequoias across the US/Can border is immense. I’d recommend you buy locally. It’ll be exponentially cheaper. If you can’t afford hundreds of seedlings (as it’ll cost a decent amount of $) you could buy lots of seeds to germinate yourself. That’ll save you a lot of money. Im finishing my studies in Permaculture in a city/apartment with very little space at the moment. Afterwards we plan to buy a property. When we can do that I’ll hopefully have hundreds available! I love the fact you plan to do that with your property. What is the condition of your land? Is it degraded? Healthy? In between?

    From what I've read, the germination rate of the giant redwood varies between 10-20% so if you planted 30 seeds and only got 3 at the end then that does make sense. I've heard to take them out of the fridge and put them in the warm after stratification, but keep them in the paper towel+zip lock bags. Then you check them each day for seeds break - that way you don't have to waste compost and space on the ones which won't germinate. George Maier has a really good video on this, as he germinated and grew 1200 giant sequoias: czcams.com/video/9ah5OtWQIW4/video.html

    • @planterbanter
      @planterbanter Před měsícem

      @@Stealth360stealth thanks for the comment. This is an old video, and in the years after I’ve increasingly improved germination success but yes 10-20% is exactly spot on. I remember I was trialing a winter germination which I don’t recommend 😂 i remember struggling with growth rate compared to doing it in the correct seasons. I have a some newer videos on the giant sequoias. Keeping them in the paper towel/zip lock bags until germination is something I adopted 2 years ago and couldn’t agree more with how useful it is! And thanks for the link! I’ve watched that video - he covers the topic very well.

    Try using Johnson su compost or better go into a woodland with old compost under and with rested water so microbes stay good squeeze into watering can and irrigate the germination paper with this brown liquid. It improved the germination rate in basil seeds in a randomized study 📖 I did if you want the short video I don’t know how much since it was too many seedlings and tedious to count but visually it was obvious the populations increased in germination compared to the witness non treated ones. Keep woody material off the soil I mean underground even if just a cm or it can make the plants 🌱 yellow and slow growth until it decomposes months later so if using mulch just on top to avoid regrets and don’t press it into the soil

    Hello my friend, i have been trying for about half a year to germinate giant sequoias and sempervirens.... I think you might have been watering them too much in the beginning. I lost my first batch and also some of my second batch and i from what i can tell, I think it is from watering too frequently (everyday or every other day). Can you tell me how often do you water them? maybe you can help me not lose any more. Thank you

      I got decent germination success but only from the green cones that I let dry out on it’s only. Probably around 40 that lived (about maybe 60 germinated but around 20 didn’t make it past the first week or so). Only 3-4 germinated from the green comes in the oven and I don’t think I got any success from the dried cones, maybe 1 or so. I actually just went and planted 30 of my 2-3 YO sequoia and filmed it. I’m in the process of editing it so you’ll get to see some go in the ground!

    Depending where you are- maine here- sink your pots into the ground for better wintering over. Here we got hard winters, deeper frost lines etc, average zone 4. Zone 5 on the mild years- potential for a zone 3 winter. That being said tho- there is a giant sequoia in portland thats at least 80 years old, wich that was growing around the time my grandmother was born on the sea ice between an island and the mainland. I think giant sequoia are a lot tougher than folks give them credit- they are just delicate when young

    • @planterbanter
      @planterbanter Před 4 měsíci

      Yep - couldn’t agree more with wintering pots. Something I realise that I didn’t bring up in the video. Being an Aussie with warmer winters, I remember learning that the hard way when I moved to Canada. lost a large variety of trees one year. Now to be extra safe I winter all my trees into the ground before the first frost. Wow amazing. I agree, they are a very resilient and hardy tree once established. There are 120-150 year old sequoia that can withstand Australian summers (40 degrees plus). I’ve seen plenty thrive in British Columbia (where I am currently) and everywhere in between! I think once the seedling gets through the first summer and winter, you know it’s going to do well.

I really wanna help them out and not let them die out. I still cant plant them in soil but ill replant them in bigger pots as time goes on. I noticed drying and yellowing but after repoting them it stopped and i noticed new branches growing. Added some coniferous tree feed and sprayed some amino acids based on natural ingridients on them They look better now but id like them to thrive so id value some info Im in europe central/mediteranian climate but not on high elevation Thank you and excuse grammar errors

    Hey man, I tried this and it worked but the all died after a week. My question is how much water do they need?

    • @planterbanter
      @planterbanter Před 5 měsíci

      Hey Victor! I’ve put out a newer video with a bit more details if that helps. Don’t feel bad, first time is always the least successful. There’s a whole heap of questions to ask yourself why you may have had trouble. Was it in spring? Best time of year to germinate is in spring (if you’re in the southern hemisphere it’s the wrong timing as it’s autumn!). I keep the seeds gently moist, only misting them and never letting the soil dry out. Once they germinate, make sure the soil dries slightly (but not fully)! There’s an art form to the watering that you’ll pick up over time. Never let them sit in water. That’s asking for a disaster. Ask yourself whether you watered them too much? Maybe you let them dry out? What type of soil did you use? Was it cheap garden soil or quality soil with good drainage? Did you purchase from one supplier only? How many seeds do you order? Id say a minimum of 50 seeds if you want a good 1-2 dozen trees. These are all things you have to figure out. Does this help at all? You can email me pics if you want further help (planterbanteryt@gmail.com)
