Fiat Panda 4X4 LED Headlight Upgrade
In this video, I am installing some LED headlight bulbs to my Panda 4X4.
I was sent a kit from Auxbeam to try out, and so far I am really impressed with the LED Lights.
It is still early days with the bulbs fitted, but so far I am loving them.
If you want a pair, check out : auxbeam.com
Please note, these bulbs may be for “ off road use “ in some countries.

How to Transform The Fiat Panda 4x4 - Installing A Mechanical Coupler
zhlédnutí 16KPřed měsícem
In this video, I will be fitting my latest upgrade! This is a mechanical coupling unit, which will be replacing the viscous coupler mounted to my rear differential. The idea is, on road I can put the car into 2WD, and then when the going gets tough, I can switch it into 4WD, which is a mechanical direct link from the front differential to the rear. This is essentially activating a central locki...

Looks like the ESP is kicking in?
Proper green laning , I hope you find it much more enjoyable than splashing about in a puddle.
Can’t beat splashing in a puddle

Exactly ! Brings out the inner child in us all !
Pedro is killing it!! What a legend
Thank you !!
Did the door seals hold?
Yes pretty well !
Awesome work the more panda videos I see the more I want one
How does it compare now to the mk1 panda 4x4
Mk1 pandas are good as well. Bit less usable but they are lighter.
@@PTP4X4 I mean the mk3 as good as a mk1 if the mk1 is modded they seem to have the edge no? I’m after a mk3
😍
nice videos, It looks like the bulbs have been turned upside down, I have LED and the light has to reflect off the top of the headlight not the bottom
Thanks for the info, I’ll check this out
wondering about the red Skoda in the background. my mother owned this from new and I am desperate to buy it back
What a find.
As others have said, these are completely illegal in standard factory Halogen Headlamps unfortunately, doesn’t matter if the beams ‘correct’ just fitting these bulbs is illegal and MOT testers now have to check for LeD bulb conversions as part of the MOt test. Problem is, the light gets thrown everywhere by the reflector in the headlamp. To be legal you’d need to fit projector style headlamps with the led bulbs, these and the bulbs need to technically be e-stamped as well to be legal. People here have said about ‘legal’ LeD bulbs but what they mean are performance Halogen bulbs. Osram night breakers and Phillips Racing Vision GR200 performance Halogenbukbs are the market leaders around £20 a pair on Amazon. The thing with LED bulbs and NOT testers is only part of the issue. If you got stopped by a DVSA roadside stop or by Traffic Police, they can have the car taken off the road, towed to impound and get you to pay release fees, a fine, points on your licence and an MOT retest before you. Put the Panda back on the road. Loads of information online, on the DVsA website and enthusiast sites about this mod. Even in your video you can see the bean scatter from the LED’s in the comparison.
In my state (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) switch lamps to LED are currently illegal 😭 Luckily my VW UP have good lamps (better than my mother Hyundai Creta), the only thing I can swap are the yellow-ish H4 lamps for some “super white” lamps, because reflective internals of the headlights. But a lot of people with big expensive SUV who blinds everyone doesn’t seem to have any legal problems with it 🤦🏻♂️
Try to use those built-in projector led headlights, they use the lens in the low bream and the housing for the high beam, and don't blind opposing drivers if well aligned. Also they are great for fog time
They're definitely not legal. Some MOT centres don't care, some it's an instafail. I've got some Philips LED coming for my Freelander 2 but I'll be keeping my old ones just in case.
Yeah I’ll do the same
I work for a well known car parts shop and we fit bulbs and sell bulbs. We sell the led conversion kits which say in big letters “off road or track use only”, our mot centre will fail them straight away as the light isn’t reflected correctly, for my panda I use the 150% brighter bulbs, they dramatically improve my vision without blinding people
I wasn’t sure if they are for off road use or not, but they don’t seem bright enough to be blinding. But worth bearing in mind ! If these don’t work out I’ll look into the bulbs you mentioned !
@@PTP4X4 Halfords do h4 bulbs up to 200% brighter which we run in our defender 90, both my car and my wife’s cars run the 150% so if the led’s don’t work out there is another option
Nice to see someone had the exact same thought process as me, haha. My current car has some Xenon headlamps as standard and some FYRLYT incandescent extra lights. Did use LED conversion and a massive LED ramp, but it was simply TOO bright when it came to road signs, it blinded me almost. So at times there can be things that are TOO much.
Great thanks
You can buy the Osram "Night Breaker" LEDs, with 230%. Osram claims that they are legal for the 169
😀
Do note that they are illegal. The headlight housing is made to reflect the used light source which I assume is normal incandescent or xenon. LED reflects differently and will need their own specific housing to be on the path of being legal (which still requires a bunch of test stamps and costs, at least in the EU) That is also why it's so EXTREMELY important to level them correctly as you will from time to time probably blind people unintentionally due to the reflections, no amount of levelling will remove that, so be sure to make it as good as can be. I made LED conversion myself some time back and even got it passed in inspection due to a relatively good levelling, but they can still just automatically fail you for using illegal light sources if the inspector is cranky or very by the book.
Thanks for the info. I’ll put in the description for the video that they may be for off road use only. I have adjusted them so the beam pattern is in the correct position. They don’t seem to be too high now
@@PTP4X4 I suggest checking ChrisFix's video on headlight levelling. It's 9 years old but it's what I used, a fairly solid measurement and what I personally used.
Have you got a route plan for this run? Or just the TWIS for the fording bits?
I just used the TWIS .. but to be honest this route wasn’t that amazing .. just a small road with the river crossing

Thanks !
@@PTP4X4 - You're welcome. I got one 2005 myself. It truly is an amazing vehicle in all matters.
How does the Panda behave now with permanent 4x4 drive compared to before? Are there significant differences?By the way, kudos to you for your excellent video work.Keep up the good work in the future. Greetings!
Thank you very much ! So on road I keep it in 2WD, which basically feels like it did before. But in 4WD there is a big difference. You can feel the direct mechanical join and the rear wheels really help to push the car out of tricky situations
😍 Love the cobble stone ford, where is that?
This is in Yorkshire
Where abouts in Yorkshire, I’d love to visit that.

Panda Power ❤
You are very lucky to have the possibility to running this places, unfortunatly in my country all off road is denied!
I think the best pairing for this system are manual hub lockers on the rear wheels, even if you cut power going to the rear, the diff is going to be driven as the wheels move along so even though it's not as much as when it's driven there is still efficiency losses and wear. This also would open the door to installing a simple rear locking diff or even welded without compromising everyday drivability.
Great!❤
Very nice. Great 😊👍
Thank you! Cheers!
The radio antenna bending on the rack, why not replacing it by a smaller one? On my up! the original antenna covered in rubber started to break and I replaced it with an small aluminum antenna from Aliexpress, basically the smallest I could find since my radio works fine even without an antenna, and I mostly only use it to play from my phone Bluetooth anyway.
It never really bothered me, but I may replace it in the future !
I want to do something similar but on a smaller scale on my VW UP! I just really need some bigger tires, maybe 15~16” preferably OEM from other VW, so nobody notice at first. I just need it to me a little higher to be more comfortable on bad roads.
That would be cool! I’m sure you could buy a lift kit for it as well which would be cheap and easy
@@PTP4X4 I think would look weird a lifted up with the 14” tires. My up is the Brazilian model, basically an European crossup without the plastic around the wheel arc.
Nice ratcheting spanner @12:37 🤣
Such a beast, very nicely done mate
Thanks !
Awesome little rig.
Thanks !
What wheel size aru you running?
215/70 R14
your rear diff mount is done i think that is why you have a rub spot on drive shaft where paint has worn off.
Hi, the rub mark on the prop shaft was due to my heat shield above it falling down and rubbing on the prop shaft.
Nice upgrade! I had a Vw T4 syncro with VC and sold it because of many issues other owners had with it. That special oil had to be changed periodically, you had to pay attention on hot asphalt roads, not to be stucked on, metal plates inside it could be bended, etc. At that time, I wished some passioned guys like these from Prometeo would designed a mechanical coupling like this for Panda, but for the Transporters. Now, I have a Vw T5 4motion with haldex 4 and rear diff lock. It's better and smarter than VC, but I still need to change the oil and filter, so I wish to change it with a mechanical coupler for safety and redundancy reasons. Hope someone will design one for it.. Until then, a haldex controller will be my next upgrade. That can set the coupling between 100-0 to 50-50. I also wish free wheel hubs for the rear wheels. That would really be a big improvement for your Panda, too. Less rear diff wear and better mileage.
The best laid plans of pandas and men eh. The first time I saw a motor down there it was a Jimmy stuck in that ditch before it had the run off that you boys were in. It was just a swamp before that. He was there for most of the night.
Yeah it was a pretty awful evening 😂 also stunk as well… but we did have a good laugh
@@PTP4X4 and that's the only bit that matters in reality. If it's fun then you've won. 🤣
Is that blue the original rear subframe or is it a newer modified one - if so where did you get it from?
Also - great work!! Looks awesome. Nice to do upgrades before the parts fail…
The blue parts at the rear are just my rear swing arms. I bought new ones and painted them blue. The subframe is all original. Thanks !!
Definitely a different persoective for me. We ride dort bikes down there all the time. Coleman Green Lane is one ofy all time faves. CZcams recommedned your mechaincal dif vid to me for some unknown reason but that led me here so I guess it worked out well. You video quality is really quite good. 👍
Oh nice ! So I guess you’re local to that area ? Thanks very much for the positive feedback.
@@PTP4X4 I'm up near Bedford but they are pretty my closest lanes. We often ride the east Herts area into Essex.
In short, you are installing the same device present in 1st gen Panda 4x4 (the ones from the 80s, wich had a manual coupler, instead of a viscous coupler. The 3rd gen, if I remember well, use an Haldex couple.
That’s correct. Towards the end of the video i explained the set up and mentioned it’s very similar to the 1st gen panda. 🐼

I am in need of some LED’s for my headlights.. get in touch with me on instagram and we can discuss further! It’s : @ThePanda4X4
Unless you put freewheeling hubs on the rear, rhere will still be some friction loss from the rear differential.
I agree, but this set up will improve things
What FIAT should have fitted in the factory not the fluid coupling. Awesome mod.
I agree !
@@PTP4X4 I remember the 4x4 system on the original 4x4 Panda engineered by Steyr Daimler Puch. The parts were huge compared to the standard car's front wheel drive train. And it was all mechanical.
Very cool!! I own a 4x4 Climbing with the incredible 1.3 mjt and Haldex rear diff. It’s incredibly unstoppable. I strongly recommend the diesel engine. Original it has about 145 Nm, but with easy mods can arrive easily to 180 Nm!! After all, you own a really cool build, really like this!
Thanks !! Glad you are a part of the Panda 4x4 world !
I like how you repurposed one of the cup holders as a mounting spot for the lever lol
I thought 169 4x4 are permanent 4x4
The viscous coupling always sends some power to the back wheels, but when it senses slip, it will fully engage.
can't wait for the black and white paint job getting done ?
I'd like the LSD that they do. Because when you're struggling for grip, you can tell not all 4 corners have power going to them.
I think when the clutch next needs changing I’ll look into one !
purchase link?
I contacted prometeo meccanica direct on their Instagram. But they also have a website you can contact them.
Most interesting... Been thinking about something like this for some time, not realizing someone actually already made it! How about a LSD for either front or rear? Do somebody do that? I have been toying with the idea of splitting the handbrake into two levers to be able to brake one rear wheel.
Yes the same company do make an LSD for the front. And there is a company developing a locking diff for the rear. But for now this set up is brilliant
@@PTP4X4 thank you for the response. We got two 2006 models. One was supposed to be a spares bin for the other, but ended up fixing the spares bin and now got two 4x4 Pandas!
