Not sure what brushed motor you were using exactly but I have some tips for making them work better that have worked great for the DartBox motors I sell. -Add ventilation to your bot so heat can escape and cool air can replace the hot air. -Support the motor (and gearbox) maybe with a 3D printed part (ideally TPU) or some foam or something. Just don't choke off vents. - Epoxy or superglue between motor can and gearbox mount plate, wimetimes helps expeiclaly if you cannot support the motor -Don't cheap out on ESCs. A good ESC like the Tarakan or Scorpion CL should last through endless fights if it doesn't get hit. -Respect the voltage rating of the motor. Some overvolting is ok but leads to more heat and should be managed accordingly. Test and see how hot they get after 1, 2, 3 minutes and change the throttle limit to prevent killing motors.
