My channel is mainly devoted to instrument-related projects. To date, I've featured many guitar and bass setups, builds, and repair projects. I've performed some amplifier restoration and repair work as well. I occasionally do reviews, and I love digging into the history of specific instruments and gear. I dabble in woodworking, refinishing, finish repairs, fretwork, wiring, and more... but I'm not a luthier, I'm a hobbyist, and my advice is worth just about what you pay for it. :)

Go check out my short short. I really think they're underrated. AXL made these. They have veneers too! Once upgraded, it's not average, it's above average. Slab fretboard too! If you researched what Fenders had these specs, you'd see they're 💎 diamonds!
I’ll check it out. You’ll be interested in my upcoming giveaway guitar. Also, I recently learned these have serials that start with 00, but they weren’t made in 2000. The sticker serials read as three digit years, so 002 is 2002, 007 is 2007, etc. Having seen a few dozen of these now, I can also say with confidence that they are nearly identical to most Starcasters except for the headstock shape.
@@hacksguitarhobby love giveaways! Yeah, I had a stratocaster that had a sticker number on it. Pre afinity is pretty neat too. Some had 22 frets. Like my standard strat.
Love how it turned out! A video showing how you installed the cap would have been awesome, because it's a very cool touch
I can do that on a future video. Essentially you just measure the height of the cap, drill to that depth with a 30 mm Forstner bit in a drill press with a depth stop, score up the bottom of the hole with a chisel, remove the liner from the cap and scratch up the inside, then fill the cap with hot glue to the surface, press the cap in the hole, and Bob’s your uncle. I had one pop out, which is why I started scratching things up before gluing now. I also recommend holding the cap with a canning magnet due to the heat from the hot glue, and guide it into the neck without turning the cap over, spilling the glue… but once installed, flip everything over to dry/cool so that the glue makes good contact with the wood. I may also try epoxy next time for a more definite bond, but I like the fact that I could heat and remove this if needed.
Noob question but for your cap discharge tool/wire with the resistors soldered to it, what value resistors are you using? Also, I notice in a lot of videos, guys are using the old boxy wirewound type of resistors, but it looks like you’re using the metal film resistors? Can’t really tell under the heat shrink. Does it matter what type or material resistor you’re using? Thanks in adcance
It’s been many years since I made it, so I don’t 100% remember the resistance values, but I’m pretty sure they are 10K each for a total of 20K. They are definitely 5W metal oxide. Wire wound might be simpler to find in high watt values. I used two only because I didn’t have higher resistance value resistors on hand.
@@hacksguitarhobby Awesome, thank you so much for your reply!
is this alder ?
Difficult to say for sure. General consensus is that they are Agathis or Basswood.
With single coils, no matter how well shielded, you'll still have some hum, esp. when overdriven. Very nice job, BTW.
Thanks! It's not much hum, just a bit.
Can I suggest setting up a Shure SM57 to your amp? As you have it, you can't really hear much tonal difference. The SM57 is such a classic used on a lot of classic records that most players will really understand what you have going. It's a reference tone, in a way. There are many relatively inexpensive I/O devices and freeware that will allow you to record the tones you hear in your shop. Your videos have nice voiceover levels. This will help demonstrate the actual guitar sounds better.
Yes, I do need to do something for sure. Appreciate the suggestion.
Top notch stuff. You are helping me spruce up a Mesa LSC through time and space so thank you! Subbed

I don't shield my guitars, but I probably should. Do you typically shield the entire bottom of the pickguard, or just a portion where you expect it to touch the body shielding?
I typically buy pickguards with aluminum shielding over the pickups and cavity.
Another cool build 😎 👌
Thanks 😁
Good night. Excellent video. Excuse me, I don't write or read English, I'm using a translation program to help me. Please, what would be the correct height of the six strings at the first fret?. Do you prefer the method in which no fret is pressed?. I have an American Fender Statrocaster. Thank you very much for answering.
.5 mm is a good height at the first fret with no strings pressed down. You can go lower if it feels too high, probably .4 mm.
@@hacksguitarhobbyThank you very much for the reply.
Thank you ❗️for the video it is a life saver with clear instructions & detailed demo. I am confident to restore my Peveey back stage to its original state after your final test. I loved it 👍
Glad it helped
How do you put pup springs back in especially since you are screwing through the pick up guard not a base plate?
I put the screw through the guard or ring first, put the spring on the screw, and push the pickup against the spring to compress the spring and start the screw. If the springs are too long, it can be difficult. You can also use surgical tubing in place of springs.
Does anyone know where to get replacement handle for the Gen 2 Shaped Flight Case?
eBay is the only place I’ve found (used). SKB made the cases, so you can sometimes find SKB cases for parts.
@@hacksguitarhobby Thank you! Appreciate the information. I'll hunt around 🙏
Finally, a detailed video on this. I'm at this stage of my build and the body I purchased is already painted. After watching this video I'm confident I can do it. Thanks for making this video!
You got this!
Awsome build !
Thanks! Coming along nicely!
Do the 2002 squier affinity stratocasters also have 10mm holes?
I believe so.
Hello, was the guitar made in Japan? Because it was from the year 86? Greetings and congratulations for the channel.
Yes, I believe it was.
Hello. I'm no expert but I think the Matsumoku factory where japanese Aria Pro II's were made closed in 85 or 86. I have a 1984 RS Standard that says "made in Japan" on the neck plate, and the body is not plywood. I believe the "the Cat" series were some of the first Aria Pro's that were made in Korea. Cheers,
When you removed the chassis, to keep it from falling turn the amp over on its side.
Good tip, thanks.
Dude, you're a lifesaver. Thanks!!!!

Important question... Do you have to connect the shielding paint to the ground circuit of the guitar? Iv never seen anybody doing this
Btw I have a Les Paul with the typical cavities of pots, neck pickup, bridge pickup and the pickup switch (which are separated)
It works best when you do. It's not absolutely required, but it won't do very much without it. In an LP, your switch and your pots will typically contact the paint and ground it that way. Pickup cavities might not get grounded unless you're intentional about it.
That was my first guitar. Wish I could find one
This one was released back into the wild. I got it at Goodwill originally and have seen some on eBay occasionally.
Thx bro refresher always needed it's level dives string change done 🌟 Appreciate -calm logic prevails 👍 Gorgeous top Charvette'

Nice coincidence. I'm assembling one using an eBay swimming pool body I've had laying around. I'm using similar pickups and hardware.
Awesome, good luck with the build!
Thanks, will try that first!
Good luck!
lots of great tips, particularly the layout of the tuners and marking the neck bolt holes. nice!
Thanks so much!
Hi I’m 73 ex pro, I have a Gibson LP 1973 and it plays like a dream
Nice! Dream guitar.
I have a 2012 Squier Standard Stratocaster. It’s candy apple red with a maple fingerboard. It’s my favorite guitar. I put a brass block in mine. Hot shot Locking tuners and Bornean pots and switch craft 5 way and output jack. Plays like a dream. I look for other Standards around the same year and they’re always expensive. Keep it. Squier doesn’t make 22 fret with rosewood any more. People want them.
They have the contemporary series, but I know what you are saying. The Standards are great.
Great way to take the "mystery" out of doing this. My first handmade guitar I sent off to a luthier for a final setup. I just finished my 2nd guitar last night and spent to much money on it to pay a guy to finish it! I made my own nut files out of a feeler gauge set by cutting teeth into them. To get the rounder bottom of each one I wrap a fine grit sandpaper around a slightly thinner gauge. So far I'm thrilled that I was able to finish a nut, adjust my truss rod, and set intonation and action in my basement with "cheap tools". Thank you for the video!!
Excellent idea to round the file edges!
this guitar looks sick. thanks for sharing so much of your techniques. I have an epiphone les paul that i've had since '96 and i keep wanting to dig into it, but it's daunting. i'll get there eventually!
Thanks, and good luck with your project!
That was a challenge.
Much more than usual.
Turned out nice !!
Pretty happy with it for sure.
glad the neck fix worked out!
Thanks, me too. :)
🎸👍
Yeah!
will be interested to see how the neck pulling works. I have a project guitar with a backbowed neck too, this trick seems to be the last resort without buying additional tools or jigs to bend the neck.
Video is uploading now. :)
how do you route that pocket for the 3 way switch?
I didn’t actually make that body, but if I needed to route one, I would make a template using a control plate as a guide.
Very nice indeed.
Thank you kindly
Personally, I think cream P.U.'s, rings and gold knobs would look better.
Had I ordered parts rather than using what I already had laying around, I would have gotten some of those PRS amber lampshade knobs as something different.
Got a backstage plus. For me sounds best with sat kept low and mine has a pull thick that provides some great tone.
Really versatile little amp for the time.
This is actually a good guitar, the playability is amazing, modifying and replacing all electronics and pickups with better ones and locking tuners will make this a good backup or even a gigging workhorse.
I liked the neck. I think all of those upgrades will really add to it.
Thanks. Very helpful. Will take a look at the rest of your stuff.
Great, thanks!
Thanks, just to add something, when I adjust the trust rod, it takes about a day for the wood to settle completely.
It definitely can. Thanks!
The 490r is a great pickup
Very much so.
@@hacksguitarhobbyyou said in the video that it’s not good… correct?
Yes, I lumped them together, but my comment was more so directed at the 490T. I like a 490R/498T combo much better. Also this particular 490R was a PCB version and something was making it weak. May have been a flaw in the PCB.
Nice looking guitar. Hope the heat works out. Cross your fingers.
You and me both!
Hmm, are you not heating up the wrong side of the neck? Heating up means expanding, so it could make your back bow worse this way, i guess you wat the back of the neck to expand reducing the backbow ..?
I have since wrapped both sides, but my theory is not to move it with temperature, it is to move it with the string tension, and the heating just makes it more pliable. It does seem to be working.
Loving this series. Hope we don't have to wait too long for ep3. Having watched way too many Twoodford videos I think you will need to clamp the neck in a slight upbow while heating. Also, given that you want the fretboard to become slightly concave, I'd guess it would work better to primarily heat from the back of the neck instead of the fretboard side. I'm no expert. Just my 2c. Good luck with it.
Possibly, but that is the point of the string tension… and a little update… it is moving!
