Ben Ali Libi was de artiestennaam van Michel Velleman (1895-1943), een Joodse goochelaar en komiek uit Nederland. Hij werd geboren in Groningen en trad op in verschillende theaters en variétéshows tijdens de jaren 1920 en 1930.
Ben Ali Libi was een populaire artiest en stond bekend om zijn goocheltrucs en humoristische acts. Hij was geliefd vanwege zijn levendige en energieke optredens, waarin hij het publiek vermaakte met zijn vaardigheden als goochelaar en zijn komische timing.
Helaas werd het leven van Ben Ali Libi tragisch beïnvloed door de Tweede Wereldoorlog en de Holocaust. Als Joodse artiest werd hij vervolgd door de nazi's vanwege zijn afkomst. Hij werd uiteindelijk gedeporteerd naar het concentratiekamp Sobibór, waar hij in 1943 werd vermoord.
Ben Ali Libi is ook bekend geworden door het gedicht "Ben Ali Libi" van de Nederlandse dichter Willem Wilmink. Het gedicht vertelt het verhaal van de goochelaar en is een eerbetoon aan zijn leven en talent. Het herinnert ons aan de tragische gevolgen van de Holocaust en de verloren levens van vele Joodse mensen, waaronder getalenteerde artiesten zoals Ben Ali Libi.

@@nadermilite5652 I do agree that today is the best time to be alive in all of humanity's existence, but that doesn't mean that we can't or shouldn't continue to get better as a society. I don't think people recognizing injustices, no matter how small they seem to you, necessarily makes somebody weak-minded. However, I do Believe that facing a small amount of racial prejudice is nowhere near the same thing as when people would be hosed down in the street or banned from an establishment for their skin color.

You're right, only it's reversed now. Black DA's prosecuting President Trump... making fools of themselves, and will end up in jail for malicious targeted prosecution, and for stealing taxpayer money (Fani and Wade of GA.). In working through the Peer Counseling Program of the Minneapolis Police Department, I lost a Minneapolis police officer, Jerry Millman, who “ate his gun”. He had attempted suicide before and blew off about a third of his face. He looked ugly, but at least he survived his attempted self-annihilation. He said that he was in a miserable relationship and was unable to get out of it. I did everything I could to help Jerry - including singing to him this song about the “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover” by Paul Simon (czcams.com/video/LTzgS16dR1o/video.html). But he said that the next time he attempted suicide, he’d do it right. And he did… In my collection of art created by some of my former patients and clients - from the VA Hospitals in Minneapolis, MN, and in Palo Alto, CA; Rational Life Center; and elsewhere, I have an artwork created by Jerry. It’s scary! The anguish, pain and misery are almost palpable…. Perhaps these days there are medications available to help people who feel stuck like Jerry... Sorry I didn't help more! R.I.P.
