Optimizing Downstream Purification of Biochemicals with Liquid-Liquid Extraction Technology
Recently, there has been a significant emphasis on producing organic chemicals from biomass generated via processes such as fermentation. Most of these processes produce low concentrations of organic chemicals that are higher boiling than water. As such, distillation is not a viable first step for recovery and purification.
Liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) is an ideal unit operation for removing many of these compounds either directly from the broth itself (whole broth) or from the broth after some pre-treatment step to separate the less desirable components such as cell mass, lignin, etc.
The selection of the column type is critical for optimizing the performance and cost of extraction processes. Many biomass feed solutions, especially those produced by fermentation processes or algae ponds, tend to emulsify easily upon contact and mixing with an organic solvent. Years of experimentation have proven that the reciprocating agitation found in a KARR® extraction column is superior to columns with rotating internals or non-agitated columns for systems with a tendency to emulsify.

Great webinar guys! Maybe a small question regarding the interface location in packed column. Is the location decided by the bottom valve or by the phase flow-ratio's? Thanks a lot, Stef
Interface control is by the heavy phase outlet (bottom) valve. Interface location (top or bottom) is determined by how you start up the column. First you fill the column with one phase or the other. That sets the continuous phase. Once the column is full of the selected phase, then the other phase is added and it automatically becomes the disperse phase with the interface then set (by the bottom control valve) in the opposite end of the column from where the disperse phase is added.
@@publiccalendar9105 So startup is very important as well as a level instrument? I cant fill up the column with continuous phase for lets say 75% and then startup with the dispersed phase. Afterwards changing the interface with the bottom valve?

what does the system do? if it's oil water separation then get a Voraxial separator which is about 1/20th the size and no doubt more efficient and less costly to buy.
Looks like a distillation tower. Separating the light oils from the heavy ones.
