PENNIES and COPPER. Folks, three points. You think you can horde copper coins for an investment windfall down the road? Try again. It would be better to horde copper wire. (1) As an example, just try to sell your pennies today. ---- Good luck. It ain't gonna happen. First off, I doubt if banks will buy your rolls back, unless you've got a real good relationship. And it's ILLEGAL to melt penny and nickel coins in the US. (Yes, you can melt silver and gold coins, because they're not used in circulation). Pennies and nickels are not allowed to be melted. And if you try to sell it to a corrupt smelter, and are caught, that's a $10,000 fine. So, melting your horde is off the table. What other choices are there? (2) CoinStar. But you'll lose 10 percent of any profit upfront, plus, it'll take you a long time to feed your thousands of boxes of pennies into the machine?! True. Might as well buy a lazy chair and a wheelbarrow, and ask the grocery store to let you sit in the check-out area (where that machine is) and feed your boxes of pennies in. HINT. 1,000 pennies = $10 bucks - 10 percent = $9 bucks. (Dude, it ain't worth your time). (3) Then again, storing hundreds/thousands of pounds of copper coins can destroy the actual coin itself over time. Why? Storage of the copper coins is tricky. You'll probably end up putting those heavy boxes in your basement. Your hot/cold/clammy basement. The problem with that is there's something called VERDIGRIS. Verdigris is that green, corrosive stain that happens to copper coins when surface dirt/oils mix with humidity over time. A green dot, or small stain will appear on the coin surface and then spread. From one coin to the next. Worse, once its on several, it will then consume a hundred, or a thousand coins in a weekend. They will all have a green haze on them. That haze will turn into a kind of sandy, thick, dark green corrosion. Left alone, your entire penny will become a circular, sandy green thing. No, having your coins in paper wrappers won't stop it either. In sealed boxes could be worse, because you can't see the coins. They may already be "infected." Does the place where you keep your coins get super hot or cold during the day? Humidity in the air will affect the coins as if they were raw coins in a bucket. Yeah, you could put your pennies into expensive plastic holders, but why? And I've seen verdigris infect plastic tubes of pennies too, and it will seal shut that tube of pennies. The corrosion is the kiss of death of the copper penny. Try to sell that green thing, or use it. Lastly, if you do have any valuable coppers, (eg, Key dates, or valuable mint errors), make sure that they get graded and holdered professionally if possible (eg, PCGS or NGC), before their surfaces gain that tiny green dot. Once a coin gains that green, it's considered UNGRADEABLE and thus worthless. So, I'd recommend NOT stacking pennies. Not storing any coins (or stamps for that matter) in the basement OR attic. And take time to sample your coin collection every month or so. Look through a bunch. Look for any tiny green spots. If you find any problems, pull those coins out immediately. (Green, milky stain, also gets on silver coins [eg, Morgan dollars]. It's the humidity). And, so -- buy a RED BOOK and hunt through your loose change for any good stuff, instead. --- A 1955 DDO cent would be nice to find. Or maybe even a 1950-D Nickel. They're still out there. Good luck!

Smart man. I hope you have held on to these copper pennies all these years. The price of copper is almost $10 a pound right now if melted into ingots. I know it's illegal to melt pennies into ingots but three rolls of pennies equals a pound. That's all I'm saying.

Besides, with all the graft and corruption so prevalent in our coutry today, do you really thing anyone even cares about some guy melting down a few pounds of old pennies to salvage the copper. Speeding on the interstate is illegal too. But when kept within reason, the cops won't do a thing. Besides all of that, we will soon be a cashless society. What will the govt. do with all that change when it's turned in? Melt it down.

Copper ingots are selling right now (March 3, 2020) on ebay for $6 to $10 per pound. That fact changes the economics of this practice immensely. His $25 worth of pennies converted to 16 pounds of ingots will now sell easily for $100 dollars and, depending on the quality of the ingots, may sell for as much as $160. ALL DAY LONG.

Saving copper cents is not a worthwhile investment in any financial portfolio. Maybe done as a hobby, although I dont see why. The pure bulk vs dollar value just doesn't seem worth the time or effort in my opinion. One could make more money picking up bottles and cans on roadside.
