3 Powerful Questions to Help You Sing a New Song with More Ease
PSST! If throat tension is something that is sapping your confidence, head this way to get your invite to my FREE ONLINE MASTERCLASS to help you nip it in the bud: thatsweetroar.com/throat-tension-singing-class)
💥 Clarity on exactly how to approach a song you’re learning is a game changer, not just for making it easier to sing but for your confidence during the process.
❓The questions that can bring laser-focused clarity and less strain are…
1️⃣ 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭?
Get clear on the tone you want in each section. This builds a roadmap and allows your brain to clearly communicate to the rest of your body so it can aim to create something specific with your voice.
2️⃣ 𝐈𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐲 𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞?
Stretching far beyond our vocal range (whether that’s our highest note overall or the highest note we can sing with power) will always lead to strain.
You can either sing it in a lighter, sweeter way (replacing a belt), lower the key or work your way up to that note in practice.
3️⃣ 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐈’𝐦 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐠?
Singing is all about storytelling and expression, so it makes sense that letting your emotions guide your voice can have a huge impact on sound and ease.
Knowing what emotions colour each section can allow you to bring them to life in your body and help your voice to create something more organic.

I sound phenomenal when I sing with headphones on… recently I was thinking, oh dam I could do this for real. Then I recorded myself on my Apple Watch 😳 I was HORRIFIED. I sounded awfullll 😫
I just want to know where I’m supposed to be singing from. Belly, chest, throat, nose? Wheeeeerrrreee?

Kimberley, I want to thank you so much for this motivational, therapeutic video. You truly have a gift and as I singer I really appreciate the work that you are doing. I had a bad try out singing opportunity on last night and I feel so bad and embarrassed . Listening to your video is already somewhat sinking in. I still feel pretty down but I am hearing and thinking about all that you have to say and offer for advice. God Bless Mona
Thank you so much for this. I have been so upset with myself for a bad song try out that I had on yesterday evening 7/25. I was tired from traveling, not feeling well and feel that i need more singing practice on house microphones. This video was so uplifting you are such a motivator. I am already starting to feel a little bit better as I sit here in my office/work. Mona
I helped me
I think there is no other teacher here on youtube can share this tips they are all kind of copy past from each other and some they dont know hwat they are really doing to be honest they cant even sing!, your videos are typically unique very clear demonstration and this what we call a real and a true Vocal Coach, i mean a Very Sweet Roar Vocal Coach, your voice is beautiful, you're too and your tongue too. actually youtube is very bad at Search *Human* Optimisation, they have a very bad algorithms, like searching in google lead to your breathing videos while search the same exact text in the youtube search lead to different result... Thanks for being in youtube and sharing your vocal techniques, i'm just stunned about how the unfair subscriptions number that youtube is doings for the unjust propagate algorithm that affected your content while it should be more visible since all positive comments and full of videos with theory and practice you should be the number ONE vocal coach here on youtube. 👏🎉😍🚀
Man hearing this when i am lit is so fucking overwhelming
Young tie affects throat tension, any tips?
I have young tie, do you help with singers who struggle with this?
Why do i caugh and feel itching everytime i sing
Today was my first time performing, I have started taking singing lessons recently and I worked so hard on this song. I knew it by heart, literally listen to it every day, it was good when I was rehearsing it, but I was shaking drom anxiety so today I forgot a lyric and mumbled in front of everyone. It was so disheartening after all the work I've put through, I'm trying to fight trauma about music and I would have wanted to see a positive result out of this... Just to know that it was worth to keep singing, since I don't even like my voice. The audience watched me with a blank stare and clapped only because they were supposed to since my teacher started clapping first. It was truly embarrassing. And I feel like I can't do much about it, because no matter how much I practice the song and the technique, if it's perfect during rehearsal but I make mistakes because I get extremely anxious everytime I sing in public then i cant do much, I feel like I'll keep making mistakes that will worsen my stage fright. I wasn't even anxious before the performance, but when I get there my hand and breath were shaking, my mind went somewhere else, I just wasn't present
Love your videos very informative and well presented! Been having a hard time trying the figure out the breathing. When I sit or stand bending I can easily expand my stomach but when standing it barely comes out and I actually feel discomfort like a bit of tension at the bottom of my ribcage in the middle like the air wants to go up to my chest. My ribcage also doesn't seem to expand much certainly not sideways. I also find it hard to release air slowly while singing I can do it on sss exercise tho
This is gold! Thanks!!!
Yes! This was SUPER helpful!!
Thank you!!!
Helpful! You've reminded me an old technique I learned in a college choir director about 38 years ago. Thanks!

very nice video, perfect voice
Wow that totally changed the sound of my voice. I feel like I don’t even sound like the same person, thank you!
Thank you, Kimberly. This really helped me. I am suffering from some throat kind of issue at the moment and am waiting to see an ENT consultant. I was a singer in a rock band but am resting. Singing has been everything to me so I hope I can get through this. At the moment I don't know if my problem is tension, my mind or something biological. I have been struggling mentally but this video really gave me hope to believe I will find a way through.Thank you. I will definatly work through all your videos.
This is the kind of thing that everyone learning a new skill knows to do, and ignores anyways
Haha probably, it's very easy to skip and charge ahead!
I took a choir class for an easy A and ended up being told I will be the lead in the school musical. I’m so so scared, I can’t even think about it without crying. I don’t know how I’m supposed to get through the performances…I’ve never sung anything before and now I’ve got to sing alone on a stage in front of everyone I know…it’s such a horrifying thought. This is my biggest fear in the world.
I understand you completely. I’ve got my piano exams in two weeks and am constantly stressing about it. Just really wish i could fast forward time, so i could finally get rid off that stess. Also i am really afraid i’m going to mess it up completely. But about you; I think you can do it because school wouldn’t let you be the lead if you wouldn’t be able to do that.
I am so sorry to hear that you're so petrified Andy. Your teachers obviously saw something in you that they thought would be beautiful to share. If you're going to do this it could be helpful to practice in front of smaller groups of people first (I'm sure you'll be doing this in rehearsal), but even starting with a trusted friend and getting used to the sensations that come alive in your body with your nerves. Learning to trust that you'll be okay even when you're experiencing these feelings. Please feel free to reach out to me via email if you'd like to talk more. ❤️ kim@thatsweetroar.com
Singing for 5 years now and this video explained it the best for me. I wish I listened to this 5 years ago
Wow...that really works! Thank you ✨

Thank you so much Selda, you're very kind. x
I never new I was doing this until a few days ago. For some reason my jaw was weird and hurting. I know I do lock my jaw when I want to hold a sound. I'm getting lessons to correct some of my bad habits in singing. Thanks timely video. 👍
Lol 😂
It would make me feel warm inside my heart ❤ and feel loved. Connection is important for me for the people around me.
That is so beautiful Julie. It makes me feel warm too and it makes the anxious part of me who is desperate to impress people relax a little. The lens which we view a performance can dramatically change our feelings about it! x
You are definitely a good coach!!
Aww thank you so much lovely, thrilled to have you here. ❤️
Hi Kim I'm not a singer, I play the flute and have battled with performance anxiety for nearly 50 years. I've listened to so much advice on this problem but your video has finally completely hit the nail on the head for me and explains everything. Thankyou!
Needed this. Thank you!! ❤
I'm so glad it supported you Julie! ❤️
My normal voice is flat and same with singing. People fall asleep when I sing.
Well, A) that can be a beautiful and wonderful thing! It all depends on the situation and what you want really. If you're recording an album of lullabies, that's awesome. And B) It could be that there isn't much change in intensity. Sometimes (especially for people who consider themselves quiet or introverted) it can feel really challenging to add volume or intensity to their voice. What happens if you think about "calling out" six feet away vs how you would usually sing for example?
My body relaxed so much just now thinking of it that way. Thank you for sharing
My absolute pleasure Austin, I hope you can carry that with you into your next performance. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. x
I have no technique no shape no nothing it's monotone flat deep theres like a idk it's so difficult its crazy and lack of confidence is that too sound like I'm talking and I don't even think i get pitch or anything shoot idek how to whistle I feel like I have no control of any of my mouth and throat muscles that are created for singing
All videos say "dont engage" but no one say why they engaged and how to stop engage. Practice basics etc is fine, but why there is no a direct way to disengage them
I'm sorry you're feeling frustrated by this Eliran, I completely understand. Unfortunately this is because the REASON why one singer is engaging them could be completely different from another singer. BUT the two that I find are most common are that they engage on higher notes or when singers try to add power. If it's about reaching high notes, I ask singers to work with a straw (czcams.com/video/eEwz7iXlqLs/video.html) and think about blowing a little faster in order to use their breath/air pressure to go higher instead of their degastric muscles or their tongue. If it's about adding power, this can get a little more complicated but I'd combine a mix of tongue releasing exercises (czcams.com/video/JY79Y8tCyW4/video.html) and having them "call out" around the pitch (instead of thinking about it as strong singing, this often gets their vocal cords in a more natural coordination) or have them explore where the sound is resonating if they're trying to keep the resonance in their chest/throat/mouth when it should be more up in their face). I hope some of that helped! :)
All four of my sisters sing like angels and i sound like a dying cow
I'm so sorry that you feel that way, often pitch issues can be solved with a different approach (they might learn well by listening for example, aurally, whereas you might benefit from a more visual based approach)?
Wow just watched like 5 of your videos! Learned more then I have in the past 3 years from hundreds of videos!
Lily, this is one of the nicest comments I think I've ever received. Thank you so much for watching my videos and for taking the time to comment. It means the world and I'm delighted that you've found them so helpful! ❤️
Merci beaucoup
Thank YOU Huck! 😊
Can someone throw a prayer Celine dion's way

This was a hugely helpful - and awesomely specific - adjustment. Now that I know it, I have to work hard not to force it... it really is "exploring" rather than "strengthening"
I'm so thrilled that you found it so helpful Kate, I hope it's adding more ease to your singing. ❤️
