Oldschool Half Life 1 Uplink Demo Revisited
In this old video I found on my hard drive today, I played through the Half Life Uplink demo as a means of revisiting memory lane. This was the first ever FPS game I played on our own computer as a kid. I played it so many times that I actually lost interest in trying the full game.
When I did eventually get the first game (Half Life 1), I spent most of my time playing Counter Strike or Half Life Deathmatch, so I never got to the campaign. I finished the game many years later, but this demo will always be a very nice memory to look back on.
The demo came on a demo CD provided by a local gaming news magazine, New Age Gaming.
This video is my first time returning to it after 20 years.

Half-Life: Uplink is a demo version of Valve L.L.C.'s 1998 first-person shooter computer game Half-Life, released on February 12, 1999. Uplink features many of the common enemies, characters, and weapons from the full game, but unlike the first Half-Life demo and the Half-Life 2 demo, the location and scenario in this demonstration do not appear in Half-Life.

Beginner's Guide - A game about the creative process
zhlédnutí 41Před 5 měsíci
A game about the creative process, something I'm battling with. The Beginner's Guide is a narrative video game from Davey Wreden, the creator of The Stanley Parable. It lasts about an hour and a half and has no traditional mechanics, no goals or objectives. Instead, it tells the story of a person struggling to deal with something they do not understand. The Beginner's Guide is an interactive st...
I tried Carnivore for 3 weeks - how was it?

I give my first impressions/update on how I feel after trying the Carnivore diet after 3 weeks. Nothing revelatory, but I'm definitely better off than I was trying to eat a "balanced" diet previously. I play games and talk about my experience with the next big "fad diet". My experience was very positive, not to spoil things too much. The carnivore diet involves eating nothing but meat and eggs ...
Remnant 2 - Time to shoot stuff! - P1

I give Remnant 2, "Dark Souls with guns", a go! They've copied Dark Souls even more in this release. The level design and atmosphere have had huge upgrades, but does it carry over to gameplay? It starts off pretty rough with performance issues that are only solvable by running at greatly reduced settings, but hopefully the devs will get to fixing that ASAP. Remnant II pits survivors of humanity...

Interesting tidbit for this video: I was playing in a tournament, still group stages, when this clip happened. My team had just died in quick order, and I was the last one left. My team began discussing the next round's save, if we were gamble-stacking or whatever else, while I was left to play out the rest of the round as I saw fit. Being an idiot, the idea of saving didn't cross my mind. That being the case, I stormed the doors of B and took out all four of the remaining Ts after they'd planted the bomb. I defused the bomb, and suddenly my team all stopped talking and looked down the line (I was at the end) towards me, all very confused. It was fun. Oh, and the team I did this too was my former team 😅 Also very satisfying.

When you got to the last puzzle door where narrator Davey has his rant about being like an addict you got him to start the dialog without the door closing behind you first, haha I've never seen that before. Must be something to do with you opening and closing it multiple times before stepping through. If you're curious, what's supposed to happen is you go inside and then when you try to solve the puzzle the switch on the inside isn't there so you can't actually solve it so you're just stuck in the black space listening to the rant. As just about everybody usually says after someone finishes this game, narrator Davey and Coda are not real people, but real Davey definitely used a lot of real life experiences with other people and himself to write these characters and to convey his ideas. There were a couple things throughout that didn't seem to click with you and maybe I can help. The first thing I think you just kind of sort of missed was Davey talking about the housecleaning game being in a "dark space". Coda's puzzle is a certain door, with a dark space in between, and then another of those same doors. The housecleaning game is set in a dark valley sort of place, with that same door at the beginning and at the end (at bottom of the valley and top of the valley). It's just the dark space is a little different than just a rectangular room this time, and has the house in it. I think you are right that the house part is bright, but that again just could play into a metaphor of like, finding light in the dark or something. Also, to help with interpreting the later levels with the machine, remember that the door guard says the machine IS Coda. So if the machine represents Coda, then who is the player meant to represent? Probably the only other person who Coda is showing his games too, Davey. Considering that we know that even early on Coda was readily making games that only existed to prove a point or send a message in response to Davey, and that Davey turned out to be pushy, needy person who crossed boundaries and the like, it's no surprise then that Coda makes a game or two going "look, here's Davey walking in, being pushy and demanding, and destroying my motivation to work on games". I think the press and stuff just represents the rest of the public video game world and community that Davey wants to connect Coda too, and of course the machine doesn't budge for that because, well, it's Coda. That last paragraph is definitely an interpretation I am biased towards as far as importance. On one hand I feel like the creative side of my brain is a lot like Coda with it just creating stuff because it wants to and enjoys it without any regard for anything else, and then Davey is the logical side of my brain trying to make something useful out of it and gauging that by exterior metrics of validation. For me it feels like if I am too much like Davey, then it DOES destroy my own creative motivation from within, but if I'm purely like Coda, then I can probably say goodbye to making any kind of living from my creative work. On the other hand is that my creative work is as a musician/music producer. I feel like I identify with the part where Coda seems like an individual who doesn't communicate with his words much, but he is ALWAYS speaking with his work. And I find that my own verbal communication skills often fall short, but often through putting together music or even sometimes other art forms, I find I can convey an idea stronger than in any other format. But then I find I share it with a certain someone (like a Davey in my own life) and they completely miss the point anyway. And for a long time I really was working with a Davey, and I was completely changing myself and my work to try to appease him and his mindset of having wider appeal. I admired the part of Coda that was just intrinsically motivated to make the stuff he likes regardless. I ended up deciding to just make what I like and then decide how niche I am by my results when I present my work publicly, because I can't seem to key into what other people I know and work with personally like anyway and chasing all of that gave me worsening mental health issues. I'm going to make what I like and every single person who ends up liking it when I release it is a BONUS. That's how I see it now. I work in a variety of styles so some things I make will just naturally have broader appeal than others. I've watched so many playthroughs of this game and I always end up getting new and interesting things to think about every single time, especially from creatives. Thank you for sharing!

This game really struck me, in identifying with the narrator like you did, and realizing how much I projected onto creators all the time. It really made me look at things differently, and try not to assume I know a creator through their work. It was fun to watch this and pick up on all the clues Davey gave, even right from the beginning! And then of course the ending, where you have to realize, wait, he's not actually having a breakdown in this recording, he created a work of fiction, starring himself, to convey a message. It's meta, but also kind of anti-meta, haha. Thanks for the video!

Terrorists could hide the bomb and make it harder to find for CTs :( ...Just kidding! It's a demo bug from CS 1.6. They had a lot of issues with demo playback, especially after game updates (when the version of the game client differed from the one that recorded the demo).

Nice review. Do the sides provide enough grip? While lifting the mouse for example.

    • @nisem0no
      @nisem0no Před 4 lety

The grip wasn't really a problem for me. For reference, I have probably average hands, wherein I don't battle with sweatiness much but if its mid summer or I'm nervous/caught up in the moment, I do get sweaty palms, which can throw things off. In comparison to the Kone EMP I have way more of an issue holding an EC1 matte black or EC1 divina, which are more difficult to hold with the slightest moisture. The only issue I had with the grip was that the left side is somewhat similar to the MX518 shape, in that it has very a deep groove that can hurt your thumb if it doesn't fit your hand well. But the right side is tall and flat (perpendicular to the desk) which makes it easy to get a good grip there, as opposed to a more slanted side like you'd get on other ergo mice like the EC or DeathAdder or G403. It makes it easy to fit your ring and pinky fingers there if you have large hands, which I couldn't do on other ergo mice like the DeathAdder. Hope it helps
