No, Tango6nf, all would have preferred to fly at night. There just wasn’t enough sky for all of them. For instance, and you may well know this story, on the raid to bomb Schweinfort, Deutschland there were over 1000 aircraft on the raid. And one additional story. The B-17 bomber was assembled throughout many Boeing Aircraft plants in our great USA. Do a Google search for the WWII wartime camouflaging of the Boeing complexes south of Seattle, WA. The entire plant, its surrounding homes, school, hospitals, etc… were completely hidden under the mesh created by our brilliant war department. Yes, it was a purpose-driven nation after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaiian Territory. “A day that will live in infamy.” - Franklin Delano Roosevelt, President of the United States of America. The first and last President to serve three terms. Though re-elected for three terms, he passed in April 1945, weeks before the war in Europe ended, and Harry Truman took over from absolute political obscurity, had to be briefed up the night he was sworn in. His briefing included learning about the Manhattan Project-the atom bomb. It must have been a real stunner of a briefing. Thank God men of this caliber were at the helm. We could use a few of their type right now, regardless of party affiliation, who would act without said affiliation. If a crisis of said magnitude were to befall us, God would, I’m sure outfit us with such people-there’d be women to help make top-level decisions, too.

Realistically, Those German Fighters at 1:57 , Wouldn’t be flying in a Flak Zone. They could’ve been shot down by their own Anti-Aircraft fire.

My Dad flew Lancaster bombers but like many wouldn’t talk about the raids too much but had some unbelievable photos. They were a different breed.

The greatest generation but why it took so long for these brave men/boys to get a memorial in the UK is beyond me.

As a Canadian, I take my hat off to these American bomber crews. The Americans made sorties day and night. Our Canadian guys only flew at night. The bellies of our Lancaster bombers were painted black. Anyway, the American crews had two pilots where the Canadian crews had only one "skipper". There was a very possible likelihood that one of the B-17 pilots would get killed, so they needed a second pilot. In the RCAF, you flew 30 ops (operations) and that was your tour of duty. You could then choose to do another 30 or become a trainer. One story I recall a belly-gunner's hatch jammed and he couldn't bail out when the plane had been hit and was going to crash. His buddy stayed as long as he could trying to get the hatch to open. The gunner told him to save himself. The friend bailed out but it was too low for his chute to open fully. He was killed. Incredibly, the belly-gunner survived the crash and escaped the burning Lanc'.

It was much worse than they showed. One old pilot showed me photos of the flak, it was so thick it looked like you could walk on it. Sometimes they lost half the bombers in the formation. The Germans got so desperate they flew through their own flak to attack the bombers, like in this clip.

in all respects, it was a near futile effort on the half of german fighters to try and make a dent in these bomb runs. they were sent in larger numbers than the germans could destroy even without escort and the bombers were being mass produced an ocean away where the resources were near limitless. and with a constant effort to get captured allied pilots and crews back to friendly territory, the allies were also able to keep pace with well trained crews.
