In today’s episode, I go through all of my knitting and sewing whips with you and decide whether or not I’m gonna finish them or set them free. I have been meaning to do this episode four weeks! This is a ‘single take’ episode today with very minimal editing, because sometimes “done” is good enough 😜

    I loved this vlog, thanks for taking us through your completed projects! I was here for your initial WIPs video, so it felt like such a victory to hear that you made it through so many of your projects. That bomber jacket is so delightful and puts a huge smile on my face. I had a recent victorious project, where I completed a designer-inspired dress that I started in 2022. I couldn't believe that it had taken me that long, but I was so happy to finally sew on the final button. I share it over on my YT channel in a two-part series and I hope you check it out as well if you'd like.

    I love all your makes, but that bright pink bomber and the quilted bag are my favourite...maybe because I adore pink?! I have actually resumed a wip just this afternoon, my EXP sweater that I started last year and then abandoned for some reason I can't remember. I look forward to completing it now, and wearing it at Bendigo. Hope to meet you there?! Happy making! x

    What a lovely round up of your makes - it must be a good feeling to have so many things completed!! I love the coral reef wrap, it definitely looks cosy. I know what you mean about shawls. I just finished my first large shawl and it is lovely to look at and I'm very proud of the final product, I am having a bit of trouble styling it, but I think I just need to keep experimenting. The yarn is gorgeous though.

      @theobsessivemaker Před 2 měsíci

      Hi, I had only knitting up some swatches at this stage, not a full project. But I have knitted with Holst Supersoft (check out episode 18) and it’s not the softest, it’s more of a rustic yarn. I’m now working on a garment project in the JC Rennie Lambswool cashmere blend and it promises to be rather soft to the skin. The swatch was washed up beautifully and the unwashed/greasy yarn is not bad to work with. I hope this helps. But keep watching for an upcoming episode where I talk about it.

I've used a narrow 20mm & medium width 30mm (10mm & 15mm when folded) one for all the covers I've made. If this is your first time applying fold over elastic, go with a medium width one, and choose one with a plush side that you can use against the skin.

    Thanks so much for the informative video! I have use the Holst Supersoft and find it a bit scratchy even after washing. How do you find the JC Rennie cones in terms of softness and scratchiness after washing and comparing to the Holst?

    • @theobsessivemaker
      @theobsessivemaker Před 4 měsíci

      Hey, sorry to leave you hanging for so long. I’ve been really lax in checking up on my CZcams channel. Honestly, I haven’t knit much with the JC Renni cones as yet. I am working on a Laulu shawl by Sari Nordland with the wool/cashmere blend at the moment, so I will report back in my next episode on the softness. But I totally agree with you about Holst, the super soft hasn’t really softened that much after it’s been washed. But the renunculus tee that I made in the Holst Coast has softened significantly since I first made it.

    Maybe you're supposed to put the stitches of the 1st triangle of the traveller shawl on scrap yarn and finish all the edges with an icord bind-off once the shawl is finished? I am so in love with that tamarak bomber, bummer that I live on another continent and we're not friends. I also watched your stash clean out today, and I have to applaud you for your sense of colours, looking at your stash and your wips makes me so happy (it is very grey here in the northern hemisphere).

      Thanks for sticking with watching these long episodes of WIPs and stash reset, you should also be applauded 🤣💕 seriously though, thank you. I love my refreshed stash, and now I feel like I have some air to create with my lovely remaining fabrics. Where in the northern hemisphere do you live? I figured out the shawl conundrum. The knitter is definitely expected to go back to the preamble of the pattern to find the tutorial link. But it would have been so easy to just insert a sentence at that point of the instructions to clearly direct the knitter.

    I am quite like you in that I often lose interest in a project when it's so close to being finished. I have a couple of shawls waiting to be blocked, and several sewing projects that only need a few bits doing to them to get them done. Taking everything out and looking at how close you are to finishing is often the kick up the bum to just do it as the saying goes! Personally I would line the sleeves of your jacket, if only to avoid that horrible feeling of putting the jacket on over something that will catch or 'stick' on the sleeves when you put your arms in. The lovely feeling of your arm sliding into the sleeve will make up for the couple of hours (at most, hopefully!) taken inserting the lining.

    When i made these for a friend I cut the pieces that go next to the body from regular fabric. I then cut a lining for these two pieces instead of using bias tape. Sew around the hole with the lining. Clip curves. Turn right side out and top stitch. Sew lining to bottom section. Turn right side out. Stitch together and turn right side out. Makes a nice neat finished item

    Showing all your sewing WIPs you have reminded me of a quilt that I have half finished, I think its time to address that! I am looking forward to seeing some of those items finished in your future podcasts 😊 I was also planning to knit another Tolsta tee this summer and I think this week is a good time to cast on, thanks for influencing me Sian 😂

    Thank you! really enjoyed deep dive into JC Rennie as I've never heard about it before. I also love knitting with cone wool, but I've only used Italian tweed that also blooms. I was washing with special soap, but I was wondering what is the name of the wool wash that you've used (I live in Adelaide) :)

      Hi! Sorry for delay in reply. I use the Earth Choice wool & delicates wash (from any supermarket) for the cone yarns. For my other non greasy knits I use Soak wool wash.

    I live just a. few miles from J C Rennie and have a long history knitting my dad’s jumpers with the Shetland yarn. I always knitted the jumpers on a knitting machine but hand sewn them up. The very first wash was with washing soda crystals (sodium carbonate). yes, I know! I would put a small handful in hand warm water in the bathroom ink. Agitate the water to ensure the crystals have dissolved, then add the oily garment. The oil comes out in a great rush and is fascinating. I would then rinse with plenty of warm water. Today, I would then let it float about in a wool rinse, and remove most of the water by rolling it up in a towel and standing on it. Every wash after that would be with lux flakes.

      Hi! Thank you so much for sharing your experience washing the yarn. I hope that some of the other viewers and commenters see this because it will put their minds at ease about the spinning oil and washing 💕

      I have used hot water from the tap and dish soap to get the oil out - this required a few repeats. Never thought of using soda crystals (first time hearing the name). This sounds like it'll be a lot faster. Thanks for sharing.

    Hi! I have a chunky lambswool from jc rennie and it smells sooo much! I actually am worried of knitting frm the cone directely.. i knitted a swatch and just by knitting the swatch i got a strange tickling on the throat and i am worry that is bc of the oil smelling...

      @theobsessivemaker Před 7 měsíci

      Oh no, perhaps that’s the case. But don’t despair yet. Have you tried giving the swatch a good wash? If not, give it 2 long soaks and rinses with wool wash and see how it is after that.

    I came across your channel last night and so glad I did. I'm just about to go through my remnant stash and this has been very inspiring. I get given and thrift a lot of fabric for my business but we're moving and it's a lot to manage so... Thanks for being so real and honest and helping me feel less overwhelmed :)

      Hi! I’m so glad I was able to help you feel less overwhelmed 💕 It can be hard just getting started sometimes, can’t it? Now that I’ve done it I feel like a weight has been lifted off and I’ve finally been able to let go of those guilt items. It’s having the added benefit of influencing my husband to go through his stash of collectibles and we’re now selling off those unwanted items one by one. It’s a good domino effect. I wish you every success with tackling your stash and with your move. Happy Destashing!

    Sounds like we’re on the same page. I’ve invited the spirit of Marie Kondo into our house in an effort to reduce the anxiety associated with waaaaaaay too much stuff! My yarn stash is pretty much under control - all listed in Ravelry & stored in many small tubs arranged by colour/weight or project (in -waiting). Volume of yarn stash…? We’ll let’s not mention that….I have a relatively modest fabric stash and love your ideas about storing/stacking for visibility, and maintaining an inventory (downloaded the app as soon as you mentioned it 👍🏻 Also decided to try again with a ‘Resilience Agenda Mental Fitness Diary’. I’ll look forward to seeing your progress and that will help me stay on track too. Good luck ❤

      Wow, you're so organised, I love it! Haha, we 're all entitled to our little secrets when it comes to size of stash ;) I haven't heard of that diary, but it sounds like my kind of thing :) I'm so pleased that we're all on this journey together. Good luck to you too!

    That was a lot of work! We turned our spare room into more of a sewing room for me a couple of years ago and sorting through my stash was awful! We'd bought a couple of Kallax units and I rolled up my fabric and tied it with twine, adding a tie-on label with the fibre content and the measurements. Whatever you do, sorting and storing it properly in some sort or order is very empowering isn't it! Sending you all good wishes for 2024 and I'm looking forward to seeing what you make this year!

    Love your change of mind plan - abundance - and to share!!! You are giving me some hope I can do this too! I was able to make dog beds with a ton of scraps and old apholstery pieces. You may not want to give yourself any more work at this point I understand! It worked out that I was able to donate them to a local vet/boarding near me. At least it was recycled one time anyway. Dogs chew beds I know! hahah!
