Pavarotti was performing this opera about this time. I distinctly remember reading that he was the first tenor in a century to perform it in the original key with 9 high Cs. So is Alva’s performance transposed down here. I would have thought he could sing it as written.

Very beautiful, but not very gripping. His vibrato was rather loose, too. Wonderful tenor, but not at his best here.

Con una gran belleza vocal, no suena con la bravura de un Pavarotti, sino que más bien se asemeja, en este misma ópera, a Cesare Valletti, quien fue su rival en la década de 1950. Por su tipo de voz, no tiene squillo ni potencia vocal, motivo por el que, aunque son tenores de un tipo similar, lo superan Alfredo Kraus, Luciano Pavarotti, Juan Diego Flórez y Javier Camarena. Luig Alva, quien todavía vive con más de 96 años, fue galardonado como uno de los mejores tenores ligeros de la década de 1950, por la belleza de su voz y sus agilidades en el bell canto, pero su voz decayó muy y lo criticable en él es que haya grabado y cantando cuando sólo le quedaban restos de su bella voz. Por ejemplo, en 1972, con apenas 45 años, grabo El barbero de sevilla con Hermann Prey y Teresa Berganza. En esta grabación su voz suena totalmente plana, sin variación tonal entre graves y agudos, en una sola línea y, desde luego, se oye desagradable. En cambio, en grabaciones anteriores, como en Don Giovanni y presentaciones en vivo, se escucha como un gran balcantista, aunque nunca tuvo la gran extensión vocal de Alfredo Kraus, Nicolai Gedda o Juan Diego Flórez. Siepi shines here in one of his best roles but it sounds like it was recorded in the lobby rather than inside the theater. Still his glorious voice comes through reasonably well.

Fascinating that Roberto was conducting this Boccanegra about the same time his uncle Claudio was recording 'the' classic version of the opera! Roberto's cast was certainly just as starry.
