Keeping Pakulyarra Safe
In 2013, KJ Martu Rangers from Jigalong helped move 26 pakulyarra (black-flanked rock-wallabies) from Kaalpi to Pinpi (Durba Hills - Canning Stock Route) to keep them safe.
Fast forward to today, and the project has been a huge success. Cameras at Pinpi have shown a stable breeding population, with many new baby wallabies joining the community over the years.
The key to this success is the ongoing hard work of KJ Martu Rangers and the incredible support from our partners. Together, we are combining traditional knowledge and skills with Western science and technology to monitor pakulyarra populations, track and manage feral predators, and use right-way fire to protect habitats.
Watch the film about the translocation and see the amazing efforts behind this conservation success story.
