    Hi I have been doing the ME for a few weeks now. I've noticed that from a certain gradient ( I estimate +-25% ) I start pushing off from the ball off my foot as i can no longer land my heel. This also shifts the focus of the load mainly towards my calves/ lower legs. I get The impression from the video steeper incline is better? Is this correct or do we want te be specific towards an event and or switch up the gradient? I must admit my calves get tired much more quickly then when I can land full foot and activate the larger muscle groups in the upper leg.

      Good question. The answer is in your technique. As you get above 25% you should splay your feet out as if you're a duck. Same as when you are using crampons, in alpine climbing this is called Pied en Canard :) (Duck foot in French)

      First thing to check is this: is the workout type a run or hike? It not change the workout type and you should see pa:hr

    Hello Steve, Thanks for your wonderful technical knowledge. But what I need know about and what I observed in this video are your gloves. Hi, I am Rohan from India. I go to Himalaya every year and each time I struggle with my gloves which never help with the technical work what we do like holding and using an ice axe, some kind of rope work, clipping n unclipping carabiners, zoomar handling and also to deal with the cold temperature with goes from sub 0 to -10 around at 6800 mtrs. the reason is I have very thick and fatty gloves. some times it is very difficult to reattach the crampons when they come off with the thick gloves. please can you help with the model names you are using for mountaineering and ice climbing? Or you can send the link where I can get it online. I'll be very grateful if you recommend a pair of gloves. Thank you.

    the grivel slider elastic retention cord broke exactly like that for me on a climb, the tool was bare metal after repeated plunging on the snow descent

    I love the video and I have utmost respect for Steve and Mark's experience and expertise. I will say that the ski descent that Gardiner, Hennessy and Fabricant pulled off refutes Steve's anti ski rant.

      @@UphillAthlete also I definitely appreciate your common sense ski rant. It’s seldom a good ski etc etc. It’s the same logic I use to rant against fat tire bikes….. It’s just funny how next gen though can take what at first seems illogical and then blows everyone’s minds, haha

      @@UphillAthlete private west buttress trip starts this June. We were all taught how to climb in a local rec facility in Homer Alaska by an old guide named Bill McKenna. You may remember him.

    Great video! I climbed Denali in 96 and was so excited to study, buy, and practice with all the gear before I went. But man - managing all the gear at altitude really can be overwhelming on the mountain! From the time you get out of your bag until you clip into the rope is a lifetime every morning. Also, my sleeping pad popped a leak at high camp. 2 nights at 17k pretty much on the snow was awful!! But it was all worth it.

    Phenomenal video! Thank you for taking me down memory lane to the days when we didn't have digital cameras and iPhones. My trip on the West Buttress was in 1996 and most of my best pictures are on 16mm slides. We were 18 days on the mountain and were pinned down 3 long nights in the snow cave at the end of the fixed ropes at 16,200. The wind sounded like jets taking off outside the cave entrance. Summit day unwrapped a lenticular as we climbed Pig Hill. We made it, but just barely. Your discussion here is spot on in every way and I LOVE the pictures.

    I'm not a mountaineer but during covid, I ended up wearing a mask outside one really cold day and noticed that my sunglasses didn't fog, and it kept my face warm and warmed the air I was breathing. It worked so well that I'll choose a mask over a buff or balaclava to shovel snow. (They are the soft N95's that come flat- the more firm ones are thicker and can be problematic, but I also have a tiny face). I'm not talking about surgical masks that allow leaking air out the sides. I've seen a video of someone attempting everest sleeping / relaxing with one to warm and moisten the air, but that doesn't mean it works well or at all altitudes, but I am really curious to know if it would work. Of course people like to complain that it's hard to breathe through those, but you get used to it.

    You do not change your toe piece settings. Do you keep your toe pieces in walk mode when skiing downhill?

    Doing something every day has been my training mantra. One, it takes the pressure off. Two, once I've started doing something, I usually can do more because I'm warmed up and that action has given me a sense of accomplishment. That reward cycle is key to consistency.

    Never share your equations! When clients work with you, that’s the skill you offer to them. Don’t give everything you know to the internet. Otherwise, great stuff.

    I plan on coaching beginners (people who can’t run for an hour straight) would this test be good too much for them or would a lactate analyzer be better?

      You can have them do it walking. Have them do it walking around a track or field that is flat but use the other principles in the video.

    Sweet for waxing, but not much good for sharpening edges. Maybe you only ski the powdah, and don't need sharp edges. 😊

    When I worked for RMI in the 80's, George Dunn told me he guided a climb of the Cassin Ridge.

      Yes it was guided a number of times in the 80’s mostly by Michael Covington…but never with a summit. That’s been done once , but not within the NPS’s legal framework for permitting on Denali

    Reading Training for the Uphill Athlete. I really wish I had this knowledge earlier in life. But it dropped in my lap at the right time. Never would have guessed it, but it’s so intuitive now I can’t “unsee” what you guys have taught me. I’m not anything remotely close to an endurance athlete, so I’m already getting excellent results. My winter (and summer) activities require endurance. I simply will no longer leave my dreams and goals at the door. This book is something that’s going to take me until the wheels fall off.     Do you still prefer the triple boot to the double? I'm in the same dilema - the 8oz of extra weight per foot for most of the trip is a bit of a setback IMO - I have the Scarpa 8000HDs and Boreal G1 Lites with Intuition Logan liners and unsure which one I'd use for 2025.

    I use almost the same pieces, love them, just want it to add that for the showcased use, if you chose the same gear, you need to size up: the micro puff, the houdini, and the grade vii.
