There are a number of unemployed EM graduates. How can we get jobs? I've been looking for a year now after graduation with a master's of science in EM and homeland security. Since then, I've added every kind of training I can get, including project management, but cannot get hired. Five plus years of experience is wanted, usually in some obscure area like workplace safety codes for industrial roles. I can't keep training for every qualification listed, especially since they are all so different. I'm well-trained and well-educated and have what has been called an impressive set of skills, including three volunteer positions. Adults with lives can't all work reservist and on-call positions. What gives?

This goes hand in hand with one of Zack's recent podcasts on EM Weekly. There cannot be enough attention to the need for schools to prepare for disasters, and communicating those plans as well. And for after school activities and games too, especially with all the shootings at the football games, plans need to be in place.

sirens: Despite the web site boiler plate about multi use even the governor was told when he arrived in the islands "siren means tsunami, go uphill". A good warning will come early enough you will never see the wave, just the aftermath later. Also, if you look at a map showing the location of the sirens, All of them are along the coast. If it was truly multihazard they should be spread throughout the city. My experience with sirens in high winds is hearing them downwind in the next town 5 miles away but not 100 yards upwind. If the wind was already that bad woukd anyone have actually heard them and understood? Do they have different tones for different events and do they test them all? based on the pavlovian response elicited for the public, I would guess not. Excellent thoughts for discussion and action, if needed, at all local levels across the country

It's time for action to be taken when mistakes are made, learn form them, resolve them, and don't make the same ones again. Lives were lost that didn't need to be lost, that is never acceptable. If people can't accept the hard truth, then they are in the wrong profession.

As a family who relies on the service of an emotional support animal this hit home. Animals aren’t the same as our children but they are important members of the family. It’s good to see an organization who understands that and is working to help these pets and their owners.

Yes...I'm starting at episode #1

Chat GPT started in my last semester of grad school and I was curious, but afraid to use it because of all the initial "yelling" about cheating and plagarism and "we are going to catch you" swirling around. I heard Zack talking about his wife teaching how to use it and thought it was brilliant. So, I tried it! I found it was incorrect several times and if I hadn't known the material I would not have caught it. It was very polite when I pointed out the errors which was nice. On the other hand, It worked so well for my adhd brain in creating an outline and organizing. I can't wait to play around with it more!

Burnout is real and sometimes we either don't see it ourselves or don't want to admit it for one reason or another. Thanks for addressing it John since burnout can kill us if we don't step back and reset. I appreciate the discussion and sharing that it is OK to get help, in whatever for that might be. No one is so strong that they can't use, or don't need, the support of good friends, caring co-workers, and a loving family.

Enjoyed all the callouts from Sarah about her experience and how she was able to get in the field of EM. Great advice for the rest of us working to do the same.

As someone who was never taught how to write a resume and didn't know why I wasn't getting calls for interviews until then found the help I needed and landed an exceptional job, your advise is spot on. Thank you for the candor and perspective from an employers perspective, this will no doubt help those who are either looking now or for that future job search.

Standardization is a great concept on a theoretical level, but it's also important to remember that (to compare Granny Smith to Honeycrisps) NREMT started certifying EMT-As in 1971, but even after 50 years there are still states which do not recognize it for certification.

I listened to this in my car today and needed to know more! I didn't understand how drones would work inside! Would this technique work in a dark, smoke filled building? (I was thinking inside the twin towers or pentagon on 9/11). Your idea of drones at every fire and police station is awesome. Imagine if a drone deployed into a building with a "flashlight" could help people escape by leading them to the exit!

Love the message John, don't let the distractions slow you down, keep moving forward. Some people aren't interested in having a conversation they just want to argue, they are not worth our time or energy, hard to ignore sometimes but if we are to move forward one must recognize where our time is best spent.

As someone who has been a public speaker, not in the EM world, for the past 20 years, I found this very enlightening and informative. You have to keep your audience in mind and if you don't set the hook you lose them immediately.
