How do they play? I realize this video is 8 years old but I am in the planning stage of stacking two DB-42s. I don't know what tower to use. I don't know if they make ring rotors for the DB-42's or not. That's the same as saying I don't know what rotor to use. It's my understanding that on 40 meters you don't really achieve any advantage by stacking them. Did you just stack them or did you phase them as well? I mean, are they two DB-42s in phase or is one of them out of phase that offers additional noise cancelling? Does one way tighten up the pattern more than the other? As I understand it I like to work 17 meters and I could adjust the vertical spacing to optimize for 17 meters. But nothing on my favorite band which is 40. As I mentioned as well I'm told stacking the DB-42s really doesn't have an effect on 40 meters. I already have a SteppIR. I got mine in 2007 and it's a 3 EL with the 30/40 loop and the 6 meter added. I had it at 65 feet which was just right for 40 meters I guess and I never got a bad signal report. I'm told that I could face it in with the 42s for just a little bit extra. That's an awful lot of loading on a tower. But now, after moving into retirement on a very large ranch I have room to put up several towers. Do I put up a couple of towers with mono banders stacked and phased or do I put up a couple of SteppIR DB-42's with about 35 ft vertical spacing between them and just call it even? How are they on the DX? I'm told I can get the little bit better by using mono banders made of aluminum but we see what just happened in the heartland including Texas that completely froze over. We all know the SteppIR's don't have the same problem with rime ice. That's not to say it won't stick but not like that. But the most important question is how do a couple of stacked DB-42s play as far as DX? I like 40m and 17 meters. 20 m is like shooting fish in a barrel. It's just too easy. So a couple of db-42? Or mono banders? The only thing I would be adding regardless would be an Opti beam OB 80 - 3 + that covers 3600 to the top of 3990.

I'd love to see the shack setup . This is ridiculous level . A lot of engineering and thought went into this . Not to mention time and money . I don't know much , I'm a rookie tech who enjoys 10 meter DX and some local 2 meter stuff , so to see this , it really is amazing and I truly appreciate what it took to make this come to pass . I can't imagine the cost ?? I'd say you have more money invested in coax and antennas than I make in a year , not counting the towers , guy wire cables , the property , labor , machinery to prep the land and equipment to raise the towers , a house , that's full of radios , probably some linears and all kinds of other miscellaneous equipment .. I'm gonna guess this whole outfit is hitting the million dollar mark ?? Or close to it ??

Ham Radio is what you want it to be WA5CVI. From those using 'baccy' tin qrp sets to those showing in this picture. I love building, experimenting and pushing the boundaries, so this set up would not be for me. But if this is what you like, you can't knock it. They certainly have bigger wallets than I do!
