Martial Singher coaches "Deh, vieni, non tardar"
Accompanist: James Massengale
From Le Nozze di Figaro by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1786)
Libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte, based on the play, La folle journée, ou le Mariage de Figaro by Pierre Auguste Beaumarchais (1784)
Archive video from THE FESTIVAL OF LEARNING AND PERFORMING, c. 1978
Here at last is the moment
I will enjoy without worries
In the arms of my beloved!
Timid concerns, leave my breast!
Do not return to disturb my delight!
Oh, how it seems that the comfort of this spot,
this earth and sky, respond to my amorous fire.
How the Night encourages my indiscretion!
Come, don't delay, beautiful Joy!
Come here, where Love calls you
While Night's torch does not yet glow in Heaven,
While the air is dark and the world is silent.
Here the brook murmurs, here the air is playful
And with a gentle whisper, revives the heart.
Here the little flowers laugh and the grass is cool.
All things entice the pleasures of Love.
Come, my Darling, among these hidden branches.
Come, come, I want to crown your forehead with roses.
Exsultate! Productions is proud to host the video archives of the FESTIVAL OF LEARNING AND PERFORMING. The Festival was created in the early 1970's by Susan Brenner to give young singers the opportunity to work with master artists, and apply their knowledge by performing in the community. Classes were open to the public and encompassed the interpretation of opera, art song, operetta and musical theater, as well as movement and physical conditioning. Classes with Charles Roe, Calvin Simmons, and Martial Singher were videotaped for the Festival's archives, allowing new audiences to be inspired and enriched by the great teaching that is the legacy of Susan Brenner.
Martial Singher (1904-1990) debuted at the Paris Opera in 1930, and at the Metropolitan Opera in 1943, where Virgil Thomson wrote of his "incomparable elegance" and "perfection of vocal style." He sang for 12 seasons at the Met, also appearing with the opera companies of Chicago and San Francisco, with leading orchestras, and in recital. He taught at Mannes College of Music, the Curtis Institute, and Music Academy of the West, and received the order of Chevalier of the French Legion of Honor. In 1983 he published "An Interpretive Guide to Operatic Arias."

He needs to work on his diction, its interfering with the light and playful spirit of the serenade. Italian has a more staccato sound than English.

Susan Brenner regularly arranged master classes with renowned singers, teachers, and accompanists for her students. In 1979 she incorporated the nonprofit Festival of Learning and Performing and made classes available to all singers in the community. Until the corporation was dissolved in 1995, she raised funds and produced events while maintaining her own teaching activity. In those days most people did not have access to video equipment. One of the singers was involved in television production and arranged to record four sessions for Mrs. Brenner. She left the tapes in my care, never imagining that one day technology would make it possible to share them with people all over the world. I am honored to preserve her legacy of love for great vocal literature and great artistry. No one could have foreseen that Calvin Simmons would be lost to us so soon. I have attempted to locate his family without success, and will be grateful if you can draw the videos to their attention. Calvin's matchless spirit, talent and humor transcend the darkness in the auditorium and continue to inspire and amaze. Most of the students could not be reached for permission to be identified.
