In skydiving, both main AND reserve malfunctioned
2023-10-01
The main AND the reserve parachutes got tangled around my leg. I was falling with no parachute while my leg was trapped in all ropes. I was never able to free my leg.
I cut away first and then pulled the reserve but I guess that cutting away almost did nothing.
Almost after the first spin I was not seeing anything. Everything was spinning so fast that I felt I'm going unconscious. I almost closed my eyes and went for the pull.
As soon as the main got away, the grip around my leg was so tight that there was no way to free the leg. I just tried grabbing on the lines to find which one is going to stop the canopy from rotating and making it a little stable.
I was upside down all the way down to the ground. When the reserve opened, I was still upside down because of the main wrapping around my leg.
I fell to ground on my back while one leg was in the ropes and hands grabbing to lines. No flare!
It was almost like falling a second story balcony! Luckily some grass helped me. But my whole body is sore.
I actually gave up a few times thinking there's nothing else I can do and I'm just going to die. But looking down and seeing that I still had altitude and time made me to try more and more to finally get something to work.

I love to fly, and have had friends who sky-dive and base-jump. (I'm a GA pilot who learned to fly to help conquer my acrophobia.) I flew over to another airport long ago, to watch sky-diving. It was uneventful for a while. I was standing beside a flight instructor I knew, watching the action, when one young man had a streamer. He pulled his reserve but to no avail. The FI beside me threw his binoculars down on the ground and ran for the hangar. I watched as the young man hit the ground. I've been in the medical field most of my life so I ran over to see if there was anything i could do to help, sadly, there was not, I checked his pupils which were uneven and he had a little blood in his nose. We did CPR and worked on him until the ambulance arrived, but sadly, it was not to be for him. I was distressed and upset, but I had to get it together in order to fly myself back to my home airport, which I did without incident. I'll never forget that as long as I live. I've seen many accident results in the ER at work, and subsequent deaths. But for some reason I have never forgotten the horror of that incident. (I have in the past, gone up to drop sky-divers but I do NOT sky-dive myself.) And when I see these wing-suit divers today on Red Bull videos, and knowing many have died doing that, it seals my resolve to not do any more thrill-seeking like I used to enjoy -- as you age, longevity starts to look very inviting!
What's with the finger diddle? No cut away?
That was only human malfunction. He pulled the parachute in a spin and upside down. And probably did the same with the reserve. Wasn’t the parachute
Bad deployment! Lucky, Lucky boy!
The chute didn't malfunction. That is what is likely to happen when you release it while your back is facing the ground.
I've been told that skydiving is super safe, but the algorithm is feeding me parachute malfunctions back to back
Skill issue
Some people panic when things get a little squirrelly. This guy is one of them.
Yeah I couldn't tell what happened after the flat spin panic pull.. not sure how he got so low. Almost like no rsl and chopped to a terminal reserve deployment in the basement
"I actually gave up a few times thinking there's nothing else I can do and I'm just going to die. But looking down and seeing that I still had altitude and time made me to try more and more to finally get something to work." That's not panic. That's thinking clearly in a terrifying situation.
Opened the chute upside down, got tangled and lived... lucky
That guy took that impact like a boss. 😎👍
HE LIVED????? HE LIVED!!!!!!! WOW!!!!! SO GOOD!!!!!
I had a similar incident 😞 and live to tell the story !!! I landed way off L Z in nearby wooded area !!! I was banged up , but able to walked out of area on my own !!! I remember carrying my wadded up paras in front of me as l across the L Z area !!! People were running right past me into the woods looking for me !!! I sat down by a hanger when someone came over and asked if I saw where diver came down ?? I was shaking in replying "" I'm the diver """ !!! Holy Shit the guy yelled out !!! I remember taking pack off and my jump suit ... I got in my car and drove away, never to jump again !!
Wow, God is Great , and He love you. I am former Fighter Pilot , we obligate to skydive and I saw people die in my watch .... but I saw many miscalls in my life also .
Why would you try to open ur chute with ur back to the ground? Just asking for it
Looks like he panicked before pulling his main. Luckily the reserve malfunction was minimal at worse.
Glad, so glad you are okay. Was that jump in Galt, Va.?
Not a chute failure, you pulled on your back. Glad you're ok. Arch>>>>>Count>>>>>Pull.
I had same thing almost happen. Opened not stable and chute went thru my legs. Had a mayest and couldn't cut it. Cutaway and reserve worked. But wow brother glad your good. Are ya still jumping
glad you made it.....be careful....a nice jig saw puzzle can be fun and entertaining....
The main didn't fail at all.
No AAD? That was fucking low altitude!!
Wasn't solo, was on probably 4th aff training jump. He clearly should have had 2 instructors with him. Never should have advanced to only 1 instructor. His jump prior to the last one showed that his altitude awareness sucked, as did his wave off, track away, and look, reach, pull/throw.
Too much blurr…and needless at that! NEXT………..
Well done surviving it 🎉
"A fractured pinky" is all you got for this, wow ! Gotta say that joke got me laughing for real ! I hope your pinky recovers well !
He is very Lucky to walk away from that i notice that he open his shute while he is falling on his back and that cause all the problem
chute
see man... fuck skydiving lol
Skydiving is awesome.
Whoa, what an incredible outcome for such a possible tragic event. Cheers guys, so happy to see everyone was okay
Really lucky guy
Oh!thanks LORD is not crashing 🙏
For a while I thought he was gonna land on a road !. Incredible he survived, delighted he did !
I didn't see a malfunction, I saw deployment while in the worst possible body position and him getting wrapped in the lines. A hook knife would've went a long way here! 😮😂
You sure you're good? Yes but might want to step back a little bit because I had multiple accidents in my jumpsuit.🚼
I worked with a guy that had that happen to him in Utah in late 1975 in February of 1976 he was selling a lightly used just serviced skydiving outfit parachute lollipop suit goggles everything 50 bucks ,,no thanks🥴
who packed his chute? his wife? lmao
Pack my your own chute.
I’ve never skydived and knew he messed up by pulling his parachute once that spin started, it looked like his legs got tangled. He definitely panicked at the wrong moment
That wasn't very smart of him
For every oh shit, you gotta get 20 atta boys till you are allowed to go by yourself again.
Stupid sport. Sorry.
hate when this happens haha
😂 idiot spinning pulls chute
Im about to start my AFF, and i was just wondering why you pulled your chute when you were spinning and upside down? Did you panick or something?
year later he will wonder .."why am I still alive?"
deployed chute when upside down, not a good plan that
Deploying on his back and with so much altitude left to correct his position… wow! Danger to himself and others
pauvre gars il n'est pas prêt de sauter en parachute une nouvelle fois..
Did you die?
My Father Owned One Of The First Skydiving 🪂 Schools In America in 1964 I Grew Up With This @ 10 Years Old… This Was His Lucky 🍀 Day
I bet it smell funny around the area for months. Cause if that been me I would have fertilizer all them fields around there😅😂
