Aubrey Williams In His Own Words
This short film was produced by Moray House Trust. It knits together testimony from an interview (between Aubrey Williams and Anne Walmsley in 1972) and a selection of Aubrey's sketches and fragments (held in the Tate Archive), with short commentaries on two series of murals - the Timehri Series (at Timehri Airport, now CJIA) and the Dalhousie Murals. The aim is to give a more holistic account (in his own words) of his background and influences. The film is narrated by Stanley Greaves, friend and fellow artist, who also provided the musical accompaniment.
The Tate holds an extensive archive of Aubrey Williams' work, including a transcript of this interview.

22:52....."No nation but the Dutch..... And still the Dutch rule over water Bend it to their satisfaction or change it into habitable , rich soil. The Dutch always improved the lands to be able doing better business. Jealousy made the English pricks go for wars to steal what the Dutch had. The Dutch had a fleet of 1200 ships way before other European countries (except for Portugal who was probably doing so even earlier than the Dutch) started to want colonies to get rich of them and not to pay too much for spices imported by the Dutch. There were no refrigerators so they needed spices to hide the taste of rotting food Ánd those British tea sippers wanted cheap tea. 😂

These clowns are very bold Even as they're getting old Posing as politicians With unlimited ambiitions. But now free falling down They take the whole world down all around And on formally happy faces now is seen a frown. Such a serious dangerous clown Can be found in every town Helping to bring the whole world down. So listen closely to the sound That they want to sound profound As they run the race into the ground.

I am English born to a Mauritian Father. A few years ago I found out i have family in Trinidad. Seems I could have family in any one of the British occupied countries. I discovered my family arrived in Mauritius from Bihar in the 1850's. The ship that carried them from Kalkutta was called the Waterwitch,. With respect to the British being tight on accurately logging everything, and the Mauritius indentured labour records department, we found a photo of my forefather with a signed contract. The conditions were extremely poor and there must have been a sense that they were tricked!!
