Established in 1994, Wesley Research Institute is the official research partner for UnitingCare.
Our research extends across the UnitingCare network including Lifeline, Bluecare and the four private hospitals, St Andrews War Memorial Hospital, The Wesley Hospital, Buderim Private Hospital and St Stephens at Hervey Bay.
We predominately focus on translational research and work closely with experienced doctors, nurses and allied health professionals to deliver improved treatments, better diagnostics, and enhanced care.

AI Initiative Targets ‘Beeps and Bongs’ to Revolutionise ICU Care
Harnessing the power of artificial intelligence, Intensive Care Specialists Dr James Winearls and Professor John Fraser aim to create a state-of-the-art early warning system that filters the cacophony of alarms to pinpoint significant changes in patient conditions.
With support from a Wesley Research Institute grant, this project aims to transform how healthcare professionals interpret the vast amounts of data generated by life support machines. The clinicians plan to focus on early detection of patient deterioration, particularly among those on mechanical ventilation.
This innovation not only promises to improve patient outcomes but also alleviate the burden on ICU staff, enabling them to deliver even more personalised and effective care.
