How to build biogas scrubbers at home
Getting my biogas scrubbers working is one of the last tasks in my new setup. I have always wanted to have the scrubbers and gas storage in the strawbale shed but until now it wasn't possible. With space now available I took the chance to upgrade the biogas scrubbers one more time, hopefully it will be the last. I really like these as they are easy to change, you can see in side them and they are relatively simple to install.
Scrubber 1: Water
Scrubber 2: Cat litter (any desiccant)
Scrubber 3: Iron wool

A cosy house for the digester // Any good biogas digester in a temperate climate needs a cosy home
zhlédnutí 3,9KPřed 2 lety
A biogas digester in these temperate climates needs a good house to keep it nice and warm. In these climates the digester will need to be heated most of the year so to try and make it as efficient as possible, and set it up so I can use a small solar system in the future, I have gone big! I have at least 30cm of insulation all around and more on top. All of the materials, apart from the screws ...

Now my biogas digester is setup it is time to fill it up! This means a lot of cow manure. Its not a very exciting process but one I thought I would share with you all as it is a small, but important part of creating a working biogas digester at home. To start my digester I am using cow manure and water. I am trying to keep the ratio at least 50:50, if not a bit more cow manure to water. Once th...

Sometime your biogas digester is not in the right place, but when they are full they are almost impossible to move. As I have been building the current location of my digester is not ideal so in this video I empty the digester so I can move it to its new home. My digester does not have a drain valve so I experiment with a few ways to remove the digestate. I also give my biogas digester its firs...

    Nice. Just one suggestion from a point of safety regarding gas. Only takes a few minutes tops. No matter how many clamps or fittings or plumbers tape are used. Once set-up is complete put the system from start to end under pressure. Use good old fashioned soapy water. Check ALL connections for possible gas leaks.

    Thanks for this. Really clever using cat litter. Hadn‘t thought of that. For heating, would maybe encasing your digester in compost be a reasonable heat source for avoiding decommissioning in winter?It would require a high heat compost with enough nitrogen and cellulose, but seems like a good off-grid thing worth experimenting with.

    When using that type of hole saw, it is possible to enlarge the hole by fitting the original size hole saw, inside the larger hole saw. This will help, centre the larger hole saw, and stop it sliding about.

    Might be better to put the steel wool after the water and the dessication medium (cat litter) last. Two reasons. -The hydrogen sulphide reacts with iron oxide, water is needed to rust the steel wool to make the iron oxide available. - reaction of iron oxide and hydrogen sulphide produces iron sulphide and water, but your dessication medium is before the steel wool, so there is nothing to remove this water.

    Any luck with the gas? What are you doing with your scrubbed gas in the bag? Are you going to use it to generate electricity or something else? Did you build a water heater to get the temperature up in the digester? I have a lot of grass and am wondering If I'd be able to produce bio gas from it. Hope you've not given up?

    I promise you that you aren't pulling the CO2 out with that bottle of water. Biogas is roughly 1/3 CO2 and you can't remove it with water.

  • @frictionhitch
    @frictionhitch Před 6 měsíci

    You should add an activated carbon filter after the steel wool. My understanding is that it removes VOCs. Cleaner burn and you don't have to store them in your gas bag.

    • @frictionhitch
      @frictionhitch Před 6 měsíci

      Also should consider adding a condenser to remove water vapor(perhaps mason jars in a water bath. It might work) after the water and before everything else.

    • @frictionhitch
      @frictionhitch Před 6 měsíci

      ALSO ALSO I'm pretty sure that you want a base in the water to remove acids. Bleach should work. Water alone won't do much as it has a neutral PH. Plus there is already water vapor in the Biogas.
